This aft cabin has was stripped of its headliner / hull liner because it was out of date, too dark, stained and no longer sticking well. All that’s left now is the rough fiberglass surfaces. We will transform this aft cabin using new headliner fabric from Sailrite and in the process reveal the steps required to do-it-yourself. This short video tutorial will demonstrate using the vinyl foam backed headliner.

Can you paint this on an older boat that is in good condition but just not my style? Or put removable wallpaper over it?

My biggest complaint is that if you go to Sailrite's website today, all they carry is tiny 54" wide widths. Why do they not carry the wider foam backed vinyl like the inner hull of my sailboat was originally sheathed in? I am refurbishing the interior and due to water damage from a previous owner, all of that has to come out and get replaced. The bulkhead on the sides from the deck all the way up the sides to where it ends is far taller than 54" and it is all one continuous piece as the long ends of the original material went lengthwise on the boat. A limit of 54" wide is stupid and useless except for tiny cramped spaces such as was shown in this video.

Without insulation the liner will grow mould in temperatures much below 10c. I had to remove all mine and insulate behind them to stop this happening. Fortunately they were not stuck on the hull but hardboard, with an air gap. Now no mould and a much warmer boat.

Can I ask what kind of insulation you used and would you recommend it?

@@sailawayteam I used Closed cell foam with the aluminium facing, 15-20mm thick. I tried 10mm but still had condensation forming below 0c. The same stuff they use in RV's as it's fire retardant and self adhesive. In the hard to get to spaces I used fire retardant expandable foam. It's horrible to work with, but does the job. For the most part I did not go below the water line. I also insulated the wooden deck-head in the forward and aft cabins, the aft from the aft locker. The forward cabin which had the worst condensation I had to install a second deck-head with a small insulated gap. Overall it was one hell of a job done over two years, but well worth it. Tested down to -5c and still warm and dry.

Does anyone know if the foam itself will grow mold and mildew over time in humid climates? I am in South Florida and my monkey fur is always moldy...
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, mold & mildew will grow on foam if the foam stays wet or has moisture that stays in it for longer periods of time. Once the foam accumulates dust and then gets wet mold and mildew may start to grow, especially in warm climates. You have three options to help prevent this from happening: 1. Buy a foam with a Antimicrobial/Biocide treatment (it is mixed in the form batter (mix) before forming). 2. Buy a "Dry Fast" foam that quickly dries out when wet, thus reducing the chances of mold and mildew getting what it needs, moisture. 3. Buy a "Closed Cell" foam which does not soak up water. Let me know if you have more questions.

@@SailriteDIY Thanks! What do you recommend to replace monkey fur headliner for South Florida that will be low maintenance? Option 1, 2 or something else?

I usually do not have any issues like you are describing. I just installed headliner in an RV and made a video of the process. We show how to reposition it easily. Maybe it will help you and others, here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fcVhhtOZxN_Gk2w.html
