The Saitek Pro Flight X52 Throttle: How to Remove Detents
The Saitek X52 throttle is a quality product however, it includes two detents (mechanical resistance to movement) in its throttle movement. Here is how I fixed this problem by removing the detents. This is an easy project and totally reversible.

THANK YOU! My X52 Pro's throttle had got very spongy after 75%, it wasn't engaging all the way too 100 unless you kept constant pressure on it, it would just move back to 90%. Removing the detent has fixed this! Thanks so much for posting this.

This was my issue too, it seems like the upper 25% screw in the doohicky had collapsed inward inside the piece, so removing it and going to a smooth 100% range throttle was an easy fix, and this guide helped a lot.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! I just purchased a "used twice" (obviously used more than twice) X52 pro on offer up, got it home, and the throttle was jumping around, and didn't have full range. Yeah, I plugged the throttle in while it was apart and immediately saw that the input smoothed out, and I got full range. I removed the detent, and used a little more pressure on the tension knob. You are the man. Go buy yourself a beer!

Awesome instructions! Worked like a charm. I was trying to figure out what went wrong in a dogfight when my throttle wouldn't move all the way forward and sprung back. That little detent was the cause of it all. Never liked it in the first place. Had it for years and now it's like I have a fully functioning throttle. Thanks!

DUDE!!!! This video is awesome. I never did like the detent but would deal with it... The throttle started getting stuck and I had to play with it to get the throttle all off or all on... anyhow ... I watched this video (Just before getting ready to order another joystick) and low and behold I followed you awesome video took it apart removed the detent, put it all back together and this joystick works BETTER than when I first got it brand new! Thanks a million!!! You saved me close to 200 bucks!

Thanks for the video! I play Elite Dangerous with full range throttle and landing with the detents was driving me nuts. I always thought the throttle was kind of stiff but I didn't even know the detents were there but this definitely fixes it! I have the Logitech X52 (The non Pro silver one) and initially the base wouldn't open until I realized the 2nd center screw was hidden under a "disclaimer" sticker. I used the screw driver to feel where the hole was and then pushed it through. Thanks again!

Fantastic! Opens up a bunch of power settings previously unavailable with many of my aircraft. Thanks! One tip, be sure to remove the center screws completely as shown in this vid. Otherwise it's easy to accidentally pull part of the mechanism off, and those wires are very thin. No damage was done, but removing the screws will ensure so.

Just wanted to say thanks. The detent on my X52 Pro Throttle went south. I was about ready to drop $400+ on a Warthog HOTAS when I found your video. Watched video. 15 minutes later and voila no detent. It's like a whole new throttle and way better without the detent. Now if I could just get rid of the noise around the center detents on the x and y rotation knobs on the throttle.

Worked great. Tip: When reinstalling the screws, use the screwdriver to rotate the screw as if you were trying to loosen it. Each full revolution you will hear/feel a 'click'. This is the screw thread dropping back into the thread on the plastic housing. Once you feel that click then you start rotating it to tighten it. This will help prevent stripping out the plastic threads.

I actually liked the detent, even for Elite: Dangerous, but the detent started acting "weird", it would bind up a bit until I released pressured and reset, but just tonight, it bound up on the low side, preventing me from zeroing the throttle without physically holding it back. Per your excellent instructions, I was able to remove it. It appeared to be rather dry, like glob of grease missed when it was being assembled +2 years ago. Rather than mess with the grease, I removed the detent instead. I just have to take care not to slam the throttle forward or backward without that familiar tactile feedback. This is my second X-52, been using them for almost 15 years, 20,000 hours easily between them. Good hunting!

My throttle had no resistance to move to the 100 but most of the time it was not possible to put it to zero without a having coming back to 10 or the like. The reason for this is that the detent housing is most likely cracked. It causes the detent to get twisted inside the stick. The detent housing is way to thin and almost always crack over time. Best to just remove the detent.

I had an issue where, when I adjusted thrust, the thrust in-game would go crazy. I figured my X52 pro was just crapping out, but when I went in to remove the detents (got tired of them after all these years of owning it), I checked the cables and components, didn't see any immediate problems, and put it back together. Don't know what was going on, but now my thrust is read accurately in-game, and the lack of detents makes the experience that much better.

I hit the like. Couple of questions. Does the x52 Pro throttle LCD screen and the wheel buttons directly below the LCD screen allow you to use them to interact and modify / adjust the Radio Control Panel found in every cockpit (i.e. can see at 0:44 , upper left)? Or does the LCD on the throttle base act as a read-only display? Secondly, is it possible (and fairly easy) to re-insert the small detent thing that you took out for the mod? Should use any special grease / fluid when putting back in? Thanks.

Thanks for the video, I think I'll have to think about removing it after it broke on me, I can still use the throttle but to go from below 25% to 100% I have to flick it back down from 100 to 25 and back up again, otherwise the detent stops it from going 100%. I actually wouldn't even prefer it without, I like having the biting point at 75% for both blue-line combat flying and for supercruising into a station on Elite Dangerous, but I already had to return an x52 standard for a broken spring on the centering mechanism and I'm not about to send this one away for something much more easily fixed myself.

I used a "Stainless Steelo Wool"- it did not scratch the plastic underneath and it cleaned up all of the residue in now time. Little more challenging with the contours on the stick, but the throttle must have taken all of 60 seconds. @Roger over time the 'rubber surface' disintegrates and becomes sticky- any pressure (say like from your nail) will simply remove part of it but leave the adhesive smeared- like when taking off a sticker that leaves all of its glue behind.

It wouldn´t be so critical if the throttle would stay in place. (like 95% or so) But it is moving and that is really annoying excpet you would keep your hands on the throttle but i have to operate some other things in a sim. I mean, who is buying a 200€ Joystick for an arcade game? The companys are not thinking, and about the warranty. Maybe the company should make it sure that the expensive crap is working. The first X52 pro was dead by arrival and i have no idea how long the second one will be working. There is no more quality on the marked! EDIT: It´s done. Thanks.

seems weird you want to remove the detent for elite dangerous... the 2nd detent is where you place the throttle for it to auto slow you in supercruise. (keep you in the blue) without the detent you will be overshooting stations and planets constantly. (I know this from experience coz i tried it.) I lasted about half an hour and reversed the mod back to having the detents. in elite the detents are your friend :)

The HOTAS model in Elite is based on the X52 and it seems they designed the game to function around an x52 the best, mine broke and now I don't have these useful stoppers to ease me onto blue line combat speed/blue line supercruise speed. @@VladQuake That's always my worry if something will not go back together luckily it was all ok, i also use some silicone spray on the moving parts and its nice and smooth as well as more accurate. Hope you get yours sorted soon
