Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020 and Thailand from 2023. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult son's. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. VanLife and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023.

Listening to this a day following my dad's birthday, 4 June. He would have been 110. He was an older dad. I remember walks as a wee one, he would say throughout, breath in, breath out, feel your breath', and I'd laugh, 'oh dad.' Now, much older I say the same to my grandchildren. As always Thank you.

For one who wish to end all metal & physical sufferings forever first of all must practice SILA - morality/ virtue develop from basic precepts to higher precept according to 8 FOLD NOBLE PATH. How ever much one practice meditation without the DHAMMA knowledge , Dhamma practice, following 8FNP a person may achieve all states of meditation BUT will never reach the SUPREME NIBHANNA. ALL Teachings of ALL BUDDHAS (countless BUDDHAS of the past & of future) are included in the 8FNP. Wish all peace & happiness

Thank you so much for clearly explaining this. I have watched many monks' lectures mentioning that there are 4 stages of meditation but with no clear explanation about the difference level of mindfulness at each stage. According to my understanding, it is not recommended to strive for any achievement during meditation practice but let the process occurs naturally, helping to avoid the greediness of achieving something. However, it is great to know and be able to recognize them after the practice. Your clear and detailed explanations are the answers I have been looking for Namo Buddha

Thank you very much Bhante for explaining meditation stages with your own experiences rather than discussing what is in the suttas, all what you discussed are in the suttas too. For very important reasons suttas do not explain certain experiential dhamma that one must find out oneself by practicing meditation & personal experiences may differ from person to person - In Lord Buddas teaching one has to focus/ be aware rather than concentrating (may cause head aches & other problems) on the object - As progress on meditation the initial object of meditation fade away & mindfulness on object, preethi - sukkha & upekkha becomes the objects sequentially. As progress on meditation the yogi should not go back to initial object (breath) . Other important point you explained is that when moving from sukkha to upeksha not to get attached to the sukka but let the mind advance/ move from one stage to the next upto 4th on it's own - just be aware. The bases too have their own signs to mark the difference between the past & present - Lord Buddha's meditation is explained as volutionally (kamma/ mental constructions) conditionally (many) taking place. For those who have practice meditation in past lives the focusing becomes easy, do not try hard to focus, important to be relaxed, & happy during mediation period. metta may all beings be happy & peaceful.

Hello Venerable. Thank you for the video. Does anapana samadhi is enough to practice then insight bhavana or have we need to reach at least jhanas' steadiness? Some teachers say that jhana is not a necessary condition for insight practice (and therefore nibbana) however many suttas speak of jhana regarding meditation. What is your point of view on this? Thank you again. 🙏

Namo Buddhaya Anicca. Don't get too caught up in all the terminology. Simply practice Sila, Samadhi and Panna and enjoy the results. Your dedication to the practice is good so Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu for that effort and determination. Yes keep practicing anapanasati, mindfulness of breathing and the 4 stages of samadhi and following jhanas will happen happen but don't stop to read the road signs, just keep going. Sukhi Hontu 🙏

Thanks for the video, very much appreciated it! I have a question about the experience of samadhi. Don't have a teacher, I've been practicing meditation on my own for about 10 years now and just need a confirmation what I'm doing is the right direction. I think i had glimpses of samadhi or not ,not sure...the first time was when i listened recorded sound of rain at home, my body just vanished and i became the sound for a couple of seconds, guess i merged with the object of meditation. The second time , just hugged my babyboy when we went to sleep and all of a sudden our bodies were gone only pure awareness was remaining. All of the room was there just me and his body vanished. The third time i was driving my car and on a quick succession i saw my thoughts from the side like a third person, all of sudden everything dropped my body felt like floating my mind experienced incredible joy of detaching from evry day thinking. My awareness was to the roof i could notice every movement of my body,my mind wasn't Judgemental just witnessing here and now,i guess that was non duality state of consciousness. If anybody experienced anything like that, please let me know. So if that was samadhi, i was in perfect awareness,...all my senses were open. Not like in jhana absorbed in a single object. If you can explain that for me ,please,.. would be great, thanks in advance!

Try sitting without recorded rain sound, cuddling your son or driving for few hours. If you develop the same states of mind dispassionately this is Samādhi.

Hi Phra Dan, would you speak about vulnerability please? In regards to the Buddha discussing what life was like before awakening, I know he said he was going to awaken if he died doing so and used Anapanasati on the night he awakened, how do we surrender the 1st fetter so stream entry happens? I know its not an effort by an identity that will surrender, but would you please discuss the process of accepting vulnerability even when we, unlike you, are in the 'safety' of our homes where we aren't dealing with wild animals? Maybe your own journey from living conventionally as an Englishman with modern life etc, to donning robes and living in a vastly different environment and dependency on the Dhamma. How did you make peace in mind, with the personality as 'me' and the new conditions. Also from Meditation to the overload of the senses from the world. I notice defense mechanisms and the nervous system freezes, afraid to feel the intensity. And also Ego death ... Ajahn Sumedho says the personality doesn't go away, and I'm uncertain on how to not let it take over when the 3 Tanhas appear, like him I have huge issues with Vibhava Tanha and then fear comes, I don't know how to let go. I know the Buddha said if we don't cling then that's all the teachings sorted, however something clings and I suspect a defense mechanism that is either Karmic or learned, I don't know. Thank you kindly and I hope this was not an overload! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Some teachers only place the first four jhanas under the heading of 'Jhana' and the remaining four to five as the "formless absorptions" or as the "formless realms." For ease in seeing the transition from one jhana to the next, all “nine” are labeled as 'jhanas' since they are all inter-connected and are all mental, meditative absorptions. In the Suttas of the Tipitaka the first four are labeled as 'jhanas' but are always followed by the remaining formless realms.
