I have to appreciate Sammy's honesty. He didn't become one of those righteous holier than thou ex smokers. I'll say THIS much; okay so the dude didn't live to be 90 with the smoking, drinking, carousing, etc.. But MAN did he know how to live and have fun when he was alive! That whole generation did! Now I look around at MY generation. Just uptight, hateful, getting on everyone's case and not loving life or their fellow man. Who the hell wants to live to be 90 just to act like that or be around those who do? I'd much rather have been like Sammy and HIS generation!

All you have is now and it can be beautiful if you want it to be. Every generation has its ups and downs. Sammy faced WAY more racism in his day then he would now for example. All you have is now, its all there is. Trying to live or wanting to live in another time is a refutation of your own existence. If now sucks its 100 percent on you, you decided it sucks and that is 100 percent of the reason. Someone elses percieved shortcomnings don't affect your joy, yours do. The past must be dragged up, the future must be surmised. The present is just here, effortlessly. Stay in it without resistance. All you have is now. don't waste it on an illusion of the past.
@Pulsonar
@Pulsonar 3 ай бұрын
@@supraphonic8143I get what you’re getting at, but I think you misinterpreted what he said as a pipe dream or a longing to live in another time and experience. He didnt mean that, he basically only said he’d rather be a fun lovin warrior and go out on his shield at peak than be a sad and miserable little ninny gnawing at everyone’s ankles until he’s 90. It was only a scenario he put forward, one era vs the present. That 60s era could’ve been any other era that he either lived through, or heard reflected some of his values better than what we got today. Racism aside, Sammys era and generation was just one of those that sat well with him.

Funny how a man in his 50's describes how electronic cigarettes saved his life after Chantix almost killed him with wild mood swings and panic attacks. So it all depends on who you talk to. One year of vaping (first with nicotine and now without) and this man's pink skin has returned and his cough is gone. Again, Chantix almost killed him.

@BarneeFife

@@funkyflights my diet was/is pretty horrible… not terribly overweight, about 20-30 over, starting after high school. McDonalds, sometimes 3 times a day, nearly a gallon of full sugar Coke a day in the summer, about 2 liters a day in the winter. I quit the sugar drinks in favor of diet drinks in 2005. Had my first heart attack in 2010, waited a week before driving to the hospital. Dumb, i know, but no insurance. On that night also diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes, and very high cholesterol (3 major contributors to heart attacks), …1 stent. Had my second last February. Waited a month before driving to the hospital. Dumb again, I know…. Open heart, quad bypass. Currently homeless, this will probably be the end of the road, especially because of food choices. I hope all the good people of the world make better choices, and take care of their health. One thing I sadly notice is all the people who pile their kids in the car and drive them to eat fast food, when they can make something healthy, and better tasting, at home. Many of the kids are already way overweight…. To me, that’s child abuse. Best of luck to everyone, take care.

I certainly wouldn’t deny that cigarettes are bad for your health, and are cancer causing. That said, my dear old dad (rest his soul), smoked for 51 years before he died of lung cancer at the age of 71. He was relatively healthy (no diabetes, heart disease or any other major illnesses) right up till the time of his death. I suppose you can eat yourself to death… drink yourself to death… die of a drug overdose… or simply die from being a risk taker. I’ve sat and watched my dad smoke a cigarette, and never once did he agonize over it… every one was absolute ecstasy (51 years worth). We’re ALL going to die from something, at some point. Hell, even birthdays are deadly… especially that LAST ☠️ ONE.

You can do it man. I smoked for 35 years and was up to 2 packs a day. I quit on my 50th birthday. That was 15 years ago. You've just really got to want to quit. Find some motivation. And once you get on a roll stick with it. You'll find that the longer you last the less you'll crave it. I laugh at myself now that I was hooked on the damn things in the first place!!! Plus when I first started cigarettes were 40 cents a pack. Its crazy how much they cost now. Damned if I'm gonna help big tobacco with their profits

1 pack every day and a half for about 40 years. Quit 8 years ago. I have COPD and I use 2 inhalers. Walking a distance of about 40 feet leaves me winded. Mornings are the hardest because I take the inhalers and wait for my lungs to clear and expand. It's a progressive disease and I know in about 5 years or so I'll be carrying around portable oxygen. But like Sammy I enjoyed it, and I was well aware of what I was doing and the consequences. In one way I'm extremely lucky I didn't develop lung cancer and I get a lung scan every year and for the past 8 I've been clean. On the other hand, slowly suffocating and not being able to walk a distance, climb stairs or do yard work is lousy. Quit while you're ahead. I did it cold turkey, but it was RSV that hospitalized me 4 days, gasping for breath and taking breathing treatments to finally stop.

Back in the 60s when kids could go to the store and buy cigarettes for our fathers😉 my friends and I bought a pack. I was around 9/10yrs old. We hid them in a basement and each one of us took turns taking a puff. It was my 1st time and I certainly didn't know anything about inhaling. After we smoked one we hid the pack and said we would meet again for the 2nd round. Well the next day I went to the basement by myself to sneak a puff and the cigarettes were gone. Thank God they were because I never smoked another cigarette since and I'm 68 now. There's enough mess in the air we breathe,food we eat and water we drink to add smoking to the equation!💯🙏🏾

I used straws to help with the hands issue. I'd just chew on a plastic straw when I felt like lighting up. It really helped. Used to smoke about 2 packs a day. That was 30 years ago.

I understand what he tried to say. He could not turn back time. Regretting to smoke would not change the outcome. And he admitted that smoking was dumb. To be more honest: He was addicted. And that is very sad.

I think the misconception about smoking is that it's just an empty addiction. Like once you dont crave it has no meaning. The unfortunate fact is, it is quite good fun to be puffing at at a cigerette or a vape , rather than not be. The heath concerns mean you really should quit, but in a pure lifestyle sense, it's the same as having to quit chocolate or french fries forever with no lapses. Something enjoyable would be absent.

No one argues that quitting smoking makes you feel better in a way that you’re happy you quit. It brings a lot of stress and discomfort and you go crazy over the fact that you won’t be lighting up a cigarette during the next morning routine but you should remember your body will thank you many years later saying you did the right thing because you wanted to live longer without dying in pain.

My father is now exactly the age that Sammy was when he passed, and won’t quit smoking. He’s not in good health, mostly from other things, but I think he figures that it’s one of the only things that makes him happy, so why stop.

For me quitting there was a few stages. The first of course is the addiction. It only lasted for a few days when I stopped, then it gets way easier until you get into missing the ritual of thinking about it and going out to your car for a smoke break. Once past that then it’s situational smoking, ie when all your friends gather at a party or bar to smoke. That’s all there is to it, just instantly decide to stop, stick thru the urges for a few days and you’re on your way to becoming a non-smoker.

I saw Yul Brynner in Westwood (he was in treatment at UCLA medical center) shortly before he died. Those days celebrities could still be anonymous. He looked small and frail, I remember he ordered cheese cake and cut it in half to eat a smaller portion, the discipline of a lifetime even at the end.
