I have to appreciate Sammy's honesty. He didn't become one of those righteous holier than thou ex smokers. I'll say THIS much; okay so the dude didn't live to be 90 with the smoking, drinking, carousing, etc.. But MAN did he know how to live and have fun when he was alive! That whole generation did! Now I look around at MY generation. Just uptight, hateful, getting on everyone's case and not loving life or their fellow man. Who the hell wants to live to be 90 just to act like that or be around those who do? I'd much rather have been like Sammy and HIS generation!

All you have is now and it can be beautiful if you want it to be. Every generation has its ups and downs. Sammy faced WAY more racism in his day then he would now for example. All you have is now, its all there is. Trying to live or wanting to live in another time is a refutation of your own existence. If now sucks its 100 percent on you, you decided it sucks and that is 100 percent of the reason. Someone elses percieved shortcomnings don't affect your joy, yours do. The past must be dragged up, the future must be surmised. The present is just here, effortlessly. Stay in it without resistance. All you have is now. don't waste it on an illusion of the past.
@Pulsonar3 ай бұрын
@@supraphonic8143I get what you’re getting at, but I think you misinterpreted what he said as a pipe dream or a longing to live in another time and experience. He didnt mean that, he basically only said he’d rather be a fun lovin warrior and go out on his shield at peak than be a sad and miserable little ninny gnawing at everyone’s ankles until he’s 90. It was only a scenario he put forward, one era vs the present. That 60s era could’ve been any other era that he either lived through, or heard reflected some of his values better than what we got today. Racism aside, Sammys era and generation was just one of those that sat well with him.

McDonalds, sometimes 3 times a day, nearly a gallon of full sugar Coke a day in the summer, about 2 liters a day in the winter. I quit the sugar drinks in favor of diet drinks in 2005. Had my first heart attack in 2010, waited a week before driving to the hospital. Dumb, i know, but no insurance. On that night also diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes, and very high cholesterol (3 major contributors to heart attacks), …1 stent. Had my second last February. Waited a month before driving to the hospital. Dumb again, I know…. Open heart, quad bypass. Currently homeless, this will probably be the end of the road, especially because of food choices. I hope all the good people of the world make better choices, and take care of their health. One thing I sadly notice is all the people who pile their kids in the car and drive them to eat fast food, when they can make something healthy, and better tasting, at home. I certainly wouldn’t deny that cigarettes are bad for your health, and are cancer causing. That said, my dear old dad (rest his soul), smoked for 51 years before he died of lung cancer at the age of 71. He was relatively healthy (no diabetes, heart disease or any other major illnesses) right up till the time of his death. I suppose you can eat yourself to death… drink yourself to death… die of a drug overdose… or simply die from being a risk taker. I’ve sat and watched my dad smoke a cigarette, and never once did he agonize over it… every one was absolute ecstasy (51 years worth). We’re ALL going to die from something, at some point. Hell, even birthdays are deadly… especially that LAST ☠️ ONE.

1 pack every day and a half for about 40 years. Quit 8 years ago. I have COPD and I use 2 inhalers. Walking a distance of about 40 feet leaves me winded. Mornings are the hardest because I take the inhalers and wait for my lungs to clear and expand. It's a progressive disease and I know in about 5 years or so I'll be carrying around portable oxygen. But like Sammy I enjoyed it, and I was well aware of what I was doing and the consequences. In one way I'm extremely lucky I didn't develop lung cancer and I get a lung scan every year and for the past 8 I've been clean. On the other hand, slowly suffocating and not being able to walk a distance, climb stairs or do yard work is lousy. Quit while you're ahead. I did it cold turkey, but it was RSV that hospitalized me 4 days, gasping for breath and taking breathing treatments to finally stop.

I think the misconception about smoking is that it's just an empty addiction. Like once you dont crave it has no meaning. The unfortunate fact is, it is quite good fun to be puffing at at a cigerette or a vape , rather than not be. The heath concerns mean you really should quit, but in a pure lifestyle sense, it's the same as having to quit chocolate or french fries forever with no lapses. Something enjoyable would be absent.

For me quitting there was a few stages. The first of course is the addiction. It only lasted for a few days when I stopped, then it gets way easier until you get into missing the ritual of thinking about it and going out to your car for a smoke break. Once past that then it’s situational smoking, ie when all your friends gather at a party or bar to smoke. That’s all there is to it, just instantly decide to stop, stick thru the urges for a few days and you’re on your way to becoming a non-smoker.

Quit my 3 packs a day habit 35 years ago. Cold turkey. A few weeks of suffering but it's the only way to quit. 81st birthday next month so I guess I quit in time.

I saw Yul Brynner in Westwood (he was in treatment at UCLA medical center) shortly before he died. Those days celebrities could still be anonymous. He looked small and frail, I remember he ordered cheese cake and cut it in half to eat a smaller portion, the discipline of a lifetime even at the end.

Jeez it seems like everyone from that generation smoked! Take a look at an old Perry Mason rerun, even doctors smoked. I smoked for 30 years and after many failed attempts to quit I had my last cigarette on 24 February 2007 at 18:30 hours. But who's counting? lol

Nothing against a Rat Pack member, but he's in denial. He's knows it was an nicotine addiction, but refuses to "fess up". He enjoyed it!

The 1990's & beyond Would've been his Glory days had he lived because the rest of the Lounge Singers were old & finished---but he was still Cool & still had the great Voice. It's a shame he smoked all those Years & died when he did.
