Just a reminder: Thanos was a terrible utilitarian. He failed. He could have just used the gauntlet to improve everyone's lives. He didn't. As another philosophy grad I just have to laugh (and groan) when Tim misrepresents and misunderstands philosophy so confidently. You could literally throw a first year philosophy student into his office and he’d be obliterated. His audience probably knows even less than he does though.

I watched a ton of MR as I was earning an MA in the History of Philosophy. While Sam is certainly not philosophically inclined, there's a reason why Ben Burgis is a friend of the show. Sam has a great grasp of critical thinking applied to US politics and media literacy. While Michael had a keener eye towards political and moral philosophy, there's no reason to think Sam is less qualified to speak on political issues just because he's unfamiliar with philosophy. We can't be proficient in all things. Still, I've always been impressed with the breadth of the show and appreciated the commentary as I tried to make sense of the Trump years while in grad school. Thanks to Sam and the MR crew! RIP Michael!

It's amazing how much Tim's rationale still misunderstands the situation totally. It wasn't that "Sam didn't understand these terms, so Tim had to use a pop culture reference, and then got clowned for using a pop culture reference." Sam didn't care about the argument in the first place. The very idea of reducing the current political clash to "whether someone is 100% in one camp or in the other camp" is really silly. Should we snap our fingers and eliminate half the population because of overpopulation? No. Should we mildly inconvenience people by forcing them to wear masks on airplanes during a pandemic? Yes. Is that an inconsistent position philosophically? Who cares?! As though there's a single person on the Right that has a consistent philosophical position about literally anything. Is there a superhero whose power is "let's employ a case-by-case basis, after reasonably considering the general ramifications of our options?" That's the Left. The Right is what would happen if the Joker decided to simply rob Bruce Wayne of all of his money and become a billionaire. The Left isn't a superhero, it is the collective power of the downtrodden who aren't supposed to wait for one magical guy who can punch down buildings.

Tim Pool’s audience is known for deep discussions of high-level ideas. My brain is now in recovery mode.

It doesn't bother me in principle that he says the words deontology or utilitarianism - it's the that the way he talks about them, he seems to think that knowing a rough definition of the two most famous branches of modern ethics IS philosophy (more so than the process of rigorously critiquing the ideas of great philosophers and actually THINKING FOR YOURSELF). Sam is ultimately correct that many right-wingers with very superficial grounding in philosophy tend to use the little they learned in an introductory philosophy class (or even English class) ad nauseum: Plato, JS Mill, and probably excerpts from Kant. I know you've covered many segments where they have. Moments like these make me miss Michael the most because I think your show does benefit from having people literate enough in philosophy like Matt (who should speak up more in these moments). The Emma/Sam/Binder approach of "not engaging in philosophy" might sound like a sick burn, but I don't think you should shit on philosophy so much as the many people with religious inclinations looking for a quick and easy way to feel smart and secure in their bs. If he had said 4+4 = 12, you wouldn't mind engaging him on the mathematical dimension, and I don't think that we should abandon philosophy altogether when leftists actually have a rich philosophical tradition that has been very influential in the social sciences (as well as great analytic philosophers & philosophers of math, linguistics and science - Ramsey, Russell, Chomsky, to name only a few - who have all made contributions to knowledge and advocated publicly for leftist positions and learned very effective debate skills from the study of logic, cf. Ben Burgis) Anyways, if we had a good philosophy guy on the show, we would be able to say, "Okay Tim, I hear you using these words, but what do they mean to *you* and how open are these things to doubt or criticism in your own mind? Doesn't a politician have a deontological duty to represent their constituents? Isn't accepting SuperPAC money to not vote in favor of pro-labor policies a direct violation of deontology? Isn't having anything that could be considered a potential conflict of interest very questionable under deontology? What about the Categorical Imperative - don't you have to see every human being as an END unto themselves and not just as the MEANS to achieve your desires? Aren't businesses, which have people whose job it is to calculate the most cost-effective way to run their business, INCENTIVIZED under capitalism to NOT see people as ends but only means? Doesn't that mean politicians who accept money from them have a deontological conflict of interest which causes them VIOLATE the categorical imperative as a standard part of doing business?" I would engage him on that level before explaining to him how deontological ethics are only really good for coming across as a consistent, honest person in interpersonal relationships but that the point of studying philosophy is actually to think for yourself.

I submit that, if one is framing a certain argument using certain terms, one should easily be able to define said terms. Otherwise, one should not be using said terms or framing said argument or both.
