Tim is flat out wrong about glycogen utilization. The body utilizes the glucose stored in the bloodstream. Then it must utilize the glycogen stores in the muscles and liver. “Bonking” is what occurs when when completely utilized all their glycogen stores and must start taping into fat reserves, which is far less efficient. If one is utilizing their glucose stores more efficiently, they rely on less glycogen to do the same work as someone else with higher utilization. Tim really needs to stick with what he knows. I’m not sure what that is, but it’s not the basics of human physiology.

Bushmen in Africa, run those distances, in addition early plains and prairie hunters did not have instant kill weapons, and would run down wounded prey, running for miles following a slight track of blood droplets. Of all man's abilities, the long distance running made men superlative hunters. Big carnivores from leonines to canines to reptiles do not pursue over even short distances. Lions will hunt herd animals with a plan that involves at most a kilometer to pick cut out prey. If they fail no pursuit they back of and try again. I get the vibe hes short pudgy and unathletic, but ive never seen more than his bust. I think his deep insecurity comes from knowing theres a good chunk of women who are good at the things he thinks men are only good at, which means theres a lot of women who are better than him because he isnt very good at those things either. This study apparently wasn't good enough for him and citing articles covering the study proved I was stupid according to them because they try to supply simplified cliff notes or whatever. I asked what he would need, he claimed evidence of modern day hunter-gatherer societies that women participate in the hunt, we do know they do that but weirdly enough that didn't convince him. Maybe in individual stores yes, but overall no. Everyone shops. And in a capitalistic, consumerist society everyone loves to shop and the economy falls apart when everyone isn't shopping. I don't understand how little of a framework one person can have about the intersection of politics, economics, and society and yet so authoritatively speaks about topics he should have no business speaking about.

Tim Pool trying to spin “women be shopping” is just peak ignorance. Consider black people and fried chicken. Everyone loves fried chicken, fried chicken is delicious. But emphasizing “black people love fried chicken” isn’t a neutral observation that black people have good taste. There are negative exaggerations associated with the stereotype. That they are ravenous, messy, only eat cheap fatty food. Similarly, “women be shopping” has connotations that women are frivolous, that they take what men make, and that they are very consumeristic.

Here's the thing, a lot of times it is better to go after small to medium game. It's not like they had refrigeration back then so if you gathered too much meat it could go to waste and large game comes with huge risks. From what I've heard most hunter gatherer societies focus way more on the gathering than the hunting. In fact during a lot of times of the year there really isn't any hunting. Tim’s baby brain going on about “more glycogen usage is good” shows a clear misunderstanding of the reality of the diversity, specialization, and tradeoffs in our human anatomy: “More glycogen usage” means mean more explosive power-but it also means lower ‘MPG🚙' for your muscles. With humans as persistence hunters for most of our history (we’d run large game to exhaustion, then kill it), most of what the article said about them being more suited (or more likely every hunting gang was a mix of the most able-bodied persons) makes perfect sense, honestly. If I was a Baby brain like Tim I’d walk away like “actually it’s been proven women were better hunters than men,” but thankfully I’m not so I can walk away understanding that this is just one strong datapoint that gives a good argument, and reality is complicated.

It's oddly fitting, and it makes me less mad at Tim than I am just wishing he had an Oscar sitting beside him to calmly explain why he's so wrong about everything. Fitness professional with 2 decades experience/biochem nerd here: Tim Pool’s assertion that glycogen utilization is an advantage for long distance running/long aerobic activity is ridiculous. There are 4 metabolic processes by which the body produces energy - ATP-PC hydrolysis, anaerobic glycolysis, aerobic glycolysis (aka the Krebs cycle or citric acid cycle), and the electron transport chain. The first three utilize glycogen as a primary substrate, or molecule that breaks down into a substance called ATP. The first produces 1 net ATP (unit of energy, think of it as the body’s gasoline) per turn of the cycle, the second produces net 2, the third produces net 8. The fourth is the only one that utilizes fat as a substrate and it produces anywhere from like 34-38 per cycle. The difference in efficiency is completely incomparable. If your body can produce most of its energy through this process, and is smaller on average, you’re going to have an easier time running for long distances.

I mean, you think you’re being slick, but this isn’t unheard of, particularly with ultras. There are, of course, other factors to consider (limb lengths and general cultural components, ie: less women doing these things due to general ideas that sports aren’t for women, for two), but even with that, data actually shows that women are, on average, faster than men, particularly in races >195 miles. It’s a small amount, but it’s there. Even short of that, the numbers are relatively even, so yeah, hypothetically there really isn’t a reason to have men’s and women’s divisions for these events. I recall there being a discussion about another sport: skeet shooting. Women have an advantage due to better eyesight and more steady hold on their rifles, and when they started winning against men, women competing in the sport was initially banned, and then they brought it back with a women’s and a men’s division. Long story short, sometimes it really is just sexism and other irrational ideas that leads to the creation of these barriers. Ultramarathons actually aren’t always sex segregated, but the people who get it in their heads that it should be are just refusing to look at the actual data.

Apparently most prehistoric hunting was done with a dog and a shortbow. In some tribes in Africa, the bushmen still hunt with their traditional methods that involve a bow that's almost impossibly tiny that fires poisoned arrows. The small arrows have a little string on them to help them limit the dose. This type of hunting just requires skill and patience and has probably been used for multiple thousands of years. Another form of prehistoric hunting simply involved getting as many members of your tribe together as possible and throw rocks at the prey. This was actually also prehistoric tribes protected themselves against predators. Every man woman and child throwing rocks was just that many more rocks in the air. Also, ever able-bodied human man, woman and child has a better throwing arm than any other primate. For a time we literally lived and died on our ability to hoard enough rock to protect ourselves and or hunt with them to feed ourselves. So the prehistorical social model really should be less of hunter-gatherer and more like family, pick-up softball teams. =D
@michaelknight2897
@michaelknight2897 6 ай бұрын
I disagree. You would have a hierarchy. Women would be chosen last as they bear children and without them the tribe dies. So while its possible, and likely did happen, the women were still protected as much as possible. Furthermore, I doubt men wanted LESS women around then (available to them to carry on their genes) as men want now. Imagine sending women to hunt and fight and the men sit around thinking "this sure become a sausage fest". LOL

@@valenciasaintilus9573 He really isn't. All anthropological evidence points to a plurality of social structures and dynamics. Ancient humans, much like modern ones, definitely organized themselves into cultures both with and without hierarchies. Many of those with hierarchies were matriarchal. Many were egalitarian. There is no intrinsic hierarchy to human social organizing. There never has been. It's a modern fiction that they do. There is no biological imperative that demands certain hierarchies or cultures. Some pregnant women of prehistory hunted and were successful. Some peoples rarely or never hunted at all, man or woman. Some prehistoric children hunted. Some didn't. History has never been a monolith. Our story is a diverse one.

@@Bendylife Sure, I just don't think the biological reasons that the author cites to justify her claim that woman were "superior hunters" are true or relevant. You say "hunting wasn't about running", yet endurance running was one of the primary things the author uses to justify her claim that woman were better hunters than men. "Probably about equal", sure, in that set of circumstances, if they were using a gun. We need to look at men vs woman using bows and spears rather than guns to assess how they would fair against one another when hunting with those weapons. I only posed that study and comment to respond to the claim that woman were naturally better than men at olympic shooting. I don't actually think athletic ability or strength mean very much when hunting. Strategy and coordination mean a whole lot more. Almost all animals will beat humans in every physical metric, so to determine who the better hunters were, men vs woman, because of the relatively tiny physical advantage one has over the other, doesn't make any sense at all to me. I mean, I kind of get it if you're looking to make a political point about equality, but in reality, our brains are what set us apart, not the physical disadvantage we all suffer when compared to other animals. This whole debate is dumb. If your strategy is to rely on your physical attributes when hunting, the strongest, fittest human will still reliably lose. So why is that the focus when assessing who the better hunters were?
