Samsung Dryer Won't Start or Spin - Troubleshooting and Repair Guide

In this video I show you how to troubleshoot a Samsung dryer that won't start or spin. There are a few things that can cause this problem with your dryer and you'll need to know how to repair and fix them to get it running again.
The first thing we test is the control board. The motor circuit relay is on the board and sends power through the motor to start the dryer. If the belt switch or thermal fuse is tripped, then it won't start and you can't dry your clothes.

Great video. I've never really done any troubleshooting on appliances, but this made it super easy and gave me the confidence to open up the dryer and see what's going on. I have a newer model than the one in the video, but as soon as I removed the top cover I could see the belt was broken. $20 part that I can replace myself compared to a $150 service call (plus parts). THANKS!

Our circuit board was different with no obvious ground wire so we were unable to check that portion. Checking the motor directly we found that the resistance was 3.6 ohm. That should have been 1.8 for the starter coil. Turns out, our centrifugal switch was stuck in the 'on' position, allowing the motor to spin, but not get started on it's own. Would never have figured that all out without your video. Thanks so much for saving us hundreds of dollars in repair.

Thank you so much, u gust saved us from throwing away a 6 yr old dryer. My husband used your video as a guide and was able to figure out we had a bad thermal sensor on the blower due to me not cleaning the lint out enough. All of you videos are great Bill. FYI, I picked up a set of bed of nails alligator clips through ATS ($5 a pair) I connect them to my meter leads in tight spots, or rather than removing switches to test continuity, in circuit testing, automotive shorts (with a homemade long test lead) etc. They came on my tone sender for Data/Telephony job. Invaluable when there are hundreds of wires and I just need to identify one or two pair!

After replacing my belt to no avail, I stumbled across this video. I had to disassemble my dryer a few times but it finally works! When my belt came off it loosened the cut off switch wires. The switch had continuity but it was not actually completing the circuit. I had to bend the prongs to get the plug to seat back on all the way.

The light in dryer works but will do nothing else. It has 220 coming into it, all thermo fuses good. I am assuming it is the main or front display control board..... replaced front display board and there was not change. Should I replace the main board. Any suggestion appreciated.

Hi this video was really amazing to help.troubleshoot step by step. Quick question, When I connect on terminal 5 and 4 on motor, I get about 4ohms during both with or without centrifugal switch pressed. Does that mean it's the motor? I don't see the 1.9ohm winding when I release it.

Bill couple of questions for you. I'm attempting to test the unit like you did at the control panel with multimeter. My particular Samsung has a little different wire hook up concerning the yellow neutral which is joined together in one plug unit along with a white and brown wire. I'm going to guess on your video unit that might be the blue and black wires? I still managed to get my multimeter in beside the yellow and the other lead (black) onto the brown motor wire. Now for my next question, my multimeter has several ohms selection to choose from. I used 200 and for whatever crazy reason its not giving me a reading at all. Have I missed something obvious or not? thanks in advance

Question: I have only 0.4 ohms when I check the main motor circuit. Since my panel doesn't have a yellow wire, I'm using the single green wire. Brown to Green gives me 0.4 ohms and Black to Green starts high and over a few seconds goes to zero and stays there. I've manually connected both the door switch circuit and the thermal cutoff sensor so as to determine if they're the problem and it appears they aren't. Given the readings, should I spend the time to disassemble and pull out the drum, or do you think it's the control board? Thank you in advance - Craig

Bill, my Samsung dryer dv331aew/xaa-01 does not have a yellow neutral wire on a separate plug as you show on this newer model dryer. There is a lighter gauge yellow one that shares a plug with 3 others, but I can't find a wiring diagram online and I have no idea if I am affecting the continuity or ohms test by pulling that multi-wire plug. I have tested continuity on the door switch (the light works), the thermal fuse (OK) and the heating element (OK). The belt and tensioner are OK. So according to your procedure, it may be the mother board unit. Please advise how to determine the neutral wire to check that component.

Very good video. I found to be my thermostat that was open. Is this caused by overheating? If yes possibly there is another cause. Like a shorten resistance or something. It could also be the failure of the thermostat as well. Anyway I saw a lot of people on Amazon complaining about changing it and after the first load it burns again, they possibly have another source of problem. Can you comment?

Okay I just found your video I have a Samsung dryer model number dv337 a TRX AAA this dryer when you try to turn it on it lights up the panel but doesn't do anything. If I understand the content of this video correctly what you're telling me is that either the relay on the control board can be bad or the thermal switch can be bad or the belt breaking switch can be bad all of which can cause the dryer to not kick on and do anything at all. Am I correct in understanding this?? I don't have any experience own testing electronics and I do not own an ohmmeter however the local appliance repair place in my town will not work on Samsung appliances at!!! I would hate to scrap this dryer what do you suggest also if the heating coil has broken and is no longer a complete circuit is that enough to shut the entire machine down or will that just make the machine not??

Hello Bill, I Have a Samsung front load dryer. I saw your video. It turns on but, doesn't spin. I took the top off and the tumbler moves with the belt, the belt seem to be good. So I plug it back in and push the tumbler and it started. I stopped it with the stop button and push start and started on again. when I turn it off completely and hit start again it did not kick in. I pushed the tumbler again and it started again. What would be your recommendation on what part to focus on. Thank You Tomas.
