I would say to delay every other effect aside from the lens flare for about half a second just so the lens flare has just a tiny bit more time to draw in the attention to the building before it blows up. Kind of like a dramatic light before the actual explosion. But either way, this looks awesome!

I Would save that for Nukes. Having the lense flare disappear while the main explosion allready starts, gives it more pop, especially for smaller explosions. Also: The lower area of effect means that these tend to occour nearly simultaneously in real life aswell. For Nukes, what you suggest makes sense. In addition I would also use the Shockwave at 1:37 in reverse. With the texture for the distortion starting off at a value of 0 (transparent) and increasing to 0,25 (25% of Full distortion) as it approaches the center. That would give the illusion of drawing in air. Afterwards, I would use a larger flash + Larger shockwave for the main explosion. The initial burn (and corresponding flash you suggested) should also cause a rising smoke effect [Flipbooks] on buildings and units in the area. The Main Explosion shockwave should then push the smoke away from the unit in the opposite direction of the center of the explosion. With debris moving in the same direction. That would be: 1) Accurate to actual nuclear bomb tests on buildings (Before the main shockwave hits, a flash can be seen, the paint of the buildings burn, a slight vacuum draws in the smoke slightly and then the main shockwave hits). 2) Accurately displays the AOE of the nuke through the shockwave and burn effect.

Awesome, just as I imagined. Interesting that you use Flipbooks for the debris, instead of 3d objects and later on 3d objects for the smaller shrapnel. I can imagine that lower graphical settings could still be able to show the main debris that way and cut out the shrapnel. And have the Shrapnel be used for collision simulations similar to Starcraft 2 on higher settings. Nicely done.

Seems like the effects are over lapping in some spots and its covering other stuff perhaps reducing some of them to make other more prominent would balance it out better such as the blast of armor has to many pieces but gets covered by the other explosion and the large blast covers any smaller metal effects nearly completely

Feels a bit like overkill , especially if a lot of these might explode. Gameplay wise, if something explodes in a lot of smoke, could the smoke actually remain for some time ? A big deal of having a lot of things explode is that you end up with a ton of smoke as well.

If you post too much of these videos I people will nit pick too much and VFX artists may feel fatigued. Do your best and or make the effects moddable in the future :)
