Sandblast and Painting Utility Trailer from Camper

This video is part of a series where I'm making a utility trailer from a pop-up camper. In this video I sandblast the frame to remove rust and old paint. Then I prime and paint the frame. Finally I add a simple light kit.
Here you will see me use a sandblaster for the first time. It works very well. In 3 hours the trailer frame is stripped of rust and paint.
The sandblaster was a 40 pound model from Harbor Freight. I bought it used from Craigslist because the seller was including blasting medium, so it was a better package price.
Three air compressors had to run together to provide enough volume of air. These are small home-owner air-compressors because I don't own a big contractor air compressor. Surprisingly, all three air compressors ran on the Aims inverter. They ran continuously for the three hours it took to sandblast the frame. That Aims inverter is very impressive.
Next I use a leaf-blower to remove any sand hiding in corners.
To prime this trailer frame I am using Corroseal Rust Converter Primer. I did this because there was still some light rust on the frame. However, I have found that the Corroseal needs more rust to do it's job. So, next time, I will buy regular metal primer.
After two coats of primer I applied a finish coat of paint from rattle-cans. I used Rust-Oleum brand Professional High Performance Enamel Gloss Black. This was in 15 oz. spray cans.
The trailer is light enough that I was able to flip the frame by myself; this allowed me to sandblast and paint all surfaces.
Once the paint dried I installed an LED light kit from amazon. The lights were easy to install and bright.
In an upcoming video I will be installing a deck on the trailer from used pressure-treated lumber.

The rust converters use a tanic acid to convert the rust into hard coating of ferric tannate. They are sold mainstream under the Permatex, Duro and Loctite brands as "Extend". What you used is the same stuff sold in bulk. They only create the coating if there is rust to convert and should not be used where there is no rust present. The water that is the carrier for the acid will actually cause rust where it is not present. It also does not prevent new rust by itself so must be topcoated in a reasonable time period. Also, do not overcoat, just apply enough to convert the rust present - more does not help and actually makes it worse. It is darn good stuff when used within those parameters. If you are completely removing the rust by media blasting it is better to use a clean metal primer on the bare metal, then paint. If there is just a little rust (as from wire brushing), a rusty metal primer straight on is the best route, then paint. Moderate rust, converter, then rusty metal primer, then paint. That is my experience.

Im currious if that's enough air myself!!! But I'd look in to a rust concerter, and only clean the areas that need to be like new! They make a kit for pressure washers, that soda blast, that would be cool, it leaves a film that resist rusting, but yeah the rust converter, has to have rust to work! It converts it to a protective layer!!! I have a old mobile home frame, like 50's, so it was a camper, about 24' long, I'd just cut the damage corner off, replace it with 2" angle steel, if you need something to mount decking to.

If you want your led lights on your trailer to not blink fast, they now sell the little boxes that makes your light blink in led version, so the bimetal switch works at the right speed for an Led load.

Time to weld a new corner piece on. At least it was the trailer and not your truck. Btw, in most places, trailers are covered under the vehicle insurance when it's attached to the vehicle. At least in Florida they are.

Nice job! Did you use non silica sand? Also, I didn’t know you needed that many air compressors! May I ask what your settings were for psi to get a good abrasive setting? Am planning in doing this to my trailer this week!
@DavidPozEnergy
@DavidPozEnergy 2 ай бұрын
This was my first time attempting to sand-blast, so I'm not an expert. The manual said 60-120psi, and I think I had that set to the low end. The problem is that it takes a ton of air VOLUME, which is why I ended up borrowing my friends compressor and adding it to mine. Note, I sand-blasted it, then primed it with a "rust conversion primer". This was a mistake. The sand-blasting took me down to bare metal and I should have used a more normal metal primer. The rust-conversion is a good choice if you are using a wire-wheel to quickly take off large chunks of rust, but leaving some rust behind.

Please be careful with your blasting media. Garden or construction sand is silica based and breathing the dust can give you silicosis. Grainger has a good Quick Tips page covering this issue.

I have a trailer almost identical to yours to refinish, what was the grit size of the sand you used to blast it? I've got a Medium grit coal slag that I can't seem to make work with my siphon sandblaster from Tractor Supply. I've bought a bigger compressor because my horizontal Kobalt crashed when I tried it, though it's only a year old and of sufficient size, and then I bought a Harbor freight tank gun and that clogged up as well--but that may have been due to a kink in the hose.
@DavidPozEnergy

I don't know the sand size, whatever was in the bucket. I bought it used off craigslist. I had to hook up 3 compressors to get enough volume of air.

Just cut the damage off, replace it with 2" Angle, so there is something to mount decking and lights, or what ever, 2"- 3" or so, just bolt it on the frame, all you would need is cut and notch, drill holes, bolt on!! I hate that happened! Maybe some of the fiberglass rods, like drive way markers, with reflective tape, put then on corners of the trailer, making it easier to see, easier to back, maybe cut them in half, they are about 4' long, bright orange, 1/2" or smaller in dia, maybe put LED's on them!!

People give away old decks for all kinds of reasons. In this case the homeowner needed a new septic tank and the deck was in the way. I've also seen some connected to old pools, or when building an addition. I still have to sort through it and throw away rotted, splitted boards. And I'll have to de-nail all of them.
@senatorjosephmccarthy2720
@senatorjosephmccarthy2720 3 жыл бұрын
@@DavidPozEnergy , I wood glue split ends. Just glued some a few days ago. And if a structure has a lose board end, gluing a short board on the end prevents splitting. The short board gets turned 90°, so the grain is strengthening the other.

Just an FYI, you can add a cheap blaster gun to most power washers and get some crazy blasting quick. Guns are usually $30-75, although the 60-$75 are going to usually last longer and are better. Get a $10 kiddy pool and some Harbor Freight tarps to make a work area and you can simply let the sand dry out and reuse with a piece of screen over a garbage can.
