Almost fifty years, & this song still gives me chills. Carlos is the only guitarist that you can instantly identify after one note.

I agree, I said same thing with too many words. He's definitely got a classic rock signature Latin wah wah blues fusion of Tejano all in the blender to be himself.

Just as soon as you hear the first note of the guitar, you know it's Santana. All the greats have their own unique sound. Thanks again, guys, for all the fantastic tunes and hard work bringing us so much joy.

Re: Santana at Woodstock, in an interview years later he said the band wasn't scheduled to go on when they did, and he had dropped some acid thinking they wouldn't be on for a long time...and then he got the word that they'd rearranged the schedule and the band had to go on right then. Carlos said he was tripping his brains out during their performance, and what a performance it was.

Carlos Santana: ""Samba Pa Ti" was conceived in New York City on a Sunday afternoon,"..."I opened the window I saw this man in the street, he was drunk and he had a saxophone and a bottle of booze in his back pocket. And I kept looking at him because he kept struggling with himself. He couldn’t make up his mind which one to put in his mouth first, the saxophone or the bottle and I immediately heard a song"..."I wrote the whole thing right there" Guitar greatness. Unique tone. Incredible feel.

This song is my awakening as a girl to the future excitement of youth ahead of me. With a friend in his first old car driving through the countryside in England at night, heading to a pub.Felt so sophisticated and alive! We played the whole Abraxas album. Fantastic.

This takes me back to the student union bar in King's College, London. 1976. Drinking a pint, eating a meat pie and this came on the radio for the first time. Introduced me to Santana and my life changed for the better. Thank you Carlos.

Great selection! Those keyboards were Gregg Rolie who went on to co-found Journey. Jose Feliciano put lyrics to it for an album of his in 1982. Enjoyed this.

As I remember it, it was the same day, same room, early 70s, I was exposed for Santanas album Abraxas, Deep Purple's "...in Rock" and Black Sabbath's "Paranoid". Before internet there were only three options for finding new music: radio, friends, and buying expensive records.

Carlos has always been quite outspoken about the role of some higher spirit in his music [in fact, he cites John Coltrane as a model for this approach to his life and music]. There is a lot more in his discography, but if you wanted another similarly impressive instrumental, I would highly recommend "Song of the Wind".

Right. There was no Instagram but there was the great concert promoter Bill Graham who managed both Fillmore East in NYC and Fillmore West in LA. He brought them to Woodstock. Graham's greatness was putting on concerts of diverse music all in one show. He enjoyed enlightening the audience. His contribution to music cannot be overstated.

Probably heard Jose Feliciano's version. It's here on YT. We all talk today of how great Santana was, and it's well deserved! I love these guys. But the entire band received $750 to fly out from the Bay Area to NY and play Woodstock. Total. They've come a long way in the last 50+ years.

Santana playing that Latin Spanish soul funk fusion jam. Legend. My memory is Santana was bringing in Tejano / Latin country music fans into rock. Then Black Sabbath came into Texas, and to this moment today, Santana is why Black Sabbath is probably still #1 in Hispanic rock fans culture. Gotta give Santana lots of credit, because, well LISTEN!!! Dude could rip and wah wah like nobody else. You know him when you hear Santana. Carlos is the man!!
