Phil just getting back to a practice schedule after not having one for over 35 years. I appreciate the tips you give as it is somewhat intimidating feeling like I am starting from scratch learning to play. Trying to establish a foundation.

Hi Phill, I think this is a fantastic job explaining the syllables. I am your comeback player and I realized doing your exercises with semiquavers after the triplets that my single tonguing is much slower than it should be. I suppose I learned to double tongue too early in my short career. I am going to continue to do these exercises to increase my single tonguing speed. Thank you and have a great day! Thanks Dave, I wouldn’t worry too much about not having a fast enough single tongue especially if your double tongue is clean. It’s good to work on it so that there is an overlap between single and double. Cheers

The sparkle is a combination of 2 things, the sound in my head and the instrument I play. This is the Stomvi Titan C trumpet.

Hi Phil. Great video..thank you. And thanks to Carlos for asking the questions about syllable start/end. I've only been playing for about 18 months, so still a beginner. I'm not sure what you mean by firmer at the back of the hole? Meaning tounge should be firm as it touches the mouthpeice?

Hi Michael. Great to have you here and congrats on starting trumpet. The tongue should sound firm at the back of the hall. There should be little to no tension in the body.

Hi Phill Great Video mate! Makes a lot of sense how you break things down. A question. Where do the Sylabels sounds start and end? For example, T-HA from low F sharp up to low C? Then T-HU from Low C up to middle C? And then maybe T-HAY from middle C up to G? Then T-HEE from G up to C above the staff? Thanks again mate!

I literally struggle so much with tonguing super fast and I cannot seem to get legato right, so if you could give a little insight on that, I would be so grateful

Because for some reason at my high school, our teacher says our standard tonguing is legato and I struggle with it haha

I haven't played for almost 12 years now. I would really like to get back to it. What are your suggestions for an almost beginner? I can barely hold G. let alone a scale or anything else.

Hi, do you think practising with a practise mute or silent brass is good or bad for the sound?

Hi Colin, This is a good question. I think practicing with a practice mute is detrimental to the sound. I also know there are times it can’t be avoided.

Thanks Phill, yes I think so too and the silent brass thing gives a false (enhanced) idea of the sound IMHO. I have built an enclosure out of cardboard and polystyrene to practise in, but I use a practise mute occasionally for quick warm ups

Quick question... Tongue behind the bottom teeth or tongue behind the top teeth?

Hi Slide, Great to have you here. I can't believe this is our first interaction. Both living in Sydney and teaching in similar areas :). This is a bit if a long answer and I did a Facebook video about it but can't seem to find it now. For me I use both. It depends on what style in playing and what sound I'm looking for as to which way I tongue. It depends on the standard of the student and which one they naturally do as to how I work with them with this. I'll put together another video on my approach to this for KZfaq.
