I knew nothing about the .284 Win until I started to study the Model 88 for purchase. I wanted it in .308 because I have a lot of brass and powder for it. If you're interested in the Model 88 you're going to run into the .284, so I started to study the ballistics. It is quite a nice round. Like Blackie 1 0f 4 stated, maybe it is time for gun guys to bring back the .284 along with the .35 Rem Mag, another and actually first short magnum. For the .350 Rem Mag, Remingtgon just didn't kow how to build a nice rifle around the cartridge. The Model 600 Rem had that barrel rib and shark fin front sight that looked rather contrived and silly. Ballistically, the .350 Rem mag has not been loaded properly by any factory ammo maker. It truly shines when reloaded properly.

I definitely believe that the 284 Winchester needs to resurface.. maybe Savage will eventually release some new versions of their 99's I also love the 350 Remington Magnum and the 6.5 Remington Magnum.. those two were ahead of their time as well!

Thanks for the comment Third! Wouldn't that be awesome, even if it was a "new" updated version. Couldn't agree more about the 350 Rem mag and the 6.5. Thanks for watching, Have a good one!

One of my favorite cartridges. I started with a Winchester 100 but it was so inaccurate, I doubt you could have committed suicide with it. I traded it off for a Remington 788 .44 Magnum. In the early '90s Browning chambered the .284 in the A-Bolt for a short time so I bought one of those and never looked back. By the way, Winchester used to load a 125 grain Power-Point at 3200 fps. My A-Bolt shoots them much better than the 150 gr and I have squirreled away 5 or 6 boxes of them. They pop up on Gunbroker and at gun shows but people ask ridiculous prices for them nowadays.
@leverbolt7699
@leverbolt7699 Жыл бұрын
Really!? I have never seen the 125 grain. I would like to try that. I'll keep an eye out for them. It seems like everything on Gunbroker is ridiculous these days, I see the 150 grain 284's for 100.00 and up a box! Have a good one Mark.
@markcloer2274
@markcloer2274 Жыл бұрын
@@leverbolt7699 Yeah, most of the 125s you'll find will be in the old yellow box, but the load did survive into the early "white box" era. Probably went the way of the dinosaur in the early '80s. BTW, the deer I have shot with it died in their tracks. The shock of that fragile bullet moving at 3200 is immense, but I have never had one exit. Also, HSM is now loading the .284 with the 160gr Sierra Game-King.

99 Savages are notorious for heat walking as the barrel heats up. I tested a 99 once by waiting 10 minutes between shots. 5 shots from a cool barrel each time made a tight cluster at 100 yards. Warm to hot and they progressively tracked up and right. The first 2 shots from a cold barrel tended to be touching. Numbers 3, 4, and 5 strung out. 99 Savage is a gun to shoot two shot groups and evaluate while letting it cool off. It's a hunting rifle period. Not a sustained fire target gun. They however can be very accurate rifles.
@leverbolt7699
@leverbolt7699 Жыл бұрын
Thanks John, I just put out a video this morning on the 358 Win and that is exactly what that rifle did. I tried to let the barrel cool enough but due to the rain and trying to get the video done, did not wait long enough. When I finally called it a day, I was almost 2' high and 2' right at 400 yards. I have noticed this habit if the 99's more pronounced with the thinner feather weight barrels as well. Thanks for watching, have a good one.

@@nolansmith1211 Good luck with the range tests. Technique is major part of bench testing guns. Hot barrels should be avoided. Give them time to cool down. And resting the fore end on your supporting hand is also important too. A hard or solid support contact sometimes causes issues with 2 piece stocks on lever guns. They print differently. 99 Savages can be "bolt action accurate" but they will not tolerate heat or hard contact front support like a bolt action sometimes does.

Does the model 88 heat walk like the 99, or how many rounds before you start seeing this occurs?
@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 Жыл бұрын
@@anonymousf454 Savage 99s will show heat walking in 3 shots. Its not enough to matter in hunting. Like 3 or 4 shots at a running deer. On the target range you can see things that really matter only in targets shooting. 88 Winchester is not stocked or bedded like a 99 Savage, so it would very likely be different. If a rifle has tension on the barrel bedding, heat expansion changes the pressure as the barrel expands. This applies to any rifle including bolt actions. S

Didn't kno much about .284. Only knew a man brought new .284 to a community maurauding cougar hunt in 63-64(cougar was targeting calves over 5 sq mi) He also drove a Nellie Belle themed Jeep. No doubt, he was RICH!! Short version, me/my buddy( armed w/.22 single-shots, were first to spot the cat( in a HUGE Pine) over our heads, we wisely retreated(scared spit-less)/reported location, cat was dispatched 1/2 mi over @ next farm.( newspaper identified us as "two un-identified youths"). But cat was silenced/ calves were safe. And, I think, pics were taken of cat loaded onto "Nellie Belle"( although he did not bag the cat)

HaHa! Great story Michael! Wow, have times changed. Can you imagine that kind of thing today? DOW would have half the town fined and/or in jail. The newspaper article would probably read along the lines of "Murderous ranchers kill defenseless Cougar." I don't know about where you live but we have got a serious lion problem in this area and it just gets harder and harder to hunt them. Anyway, I had an uncle growing up that had a 284, almost identical to the one in the video. He wasn't the best "hunter", kind of a "city guy" I guess but he got a buck every year with that thing. Usually with one shot. As a kid, I always figured that rifle was almost like magic, IT never missed. HaHa!

@@leverbolt7699 at the time I had my friend start ordering the parts to build the rifle, we had discussed the cartridge, I basically built the rifle around the cartridge and at that time it was still a wildcat cartridge, I used a 142 grain sierra hpbt matchking, I had a 30 inch Krieger barrel and a RPA quad lock single shot receiver and McMillan sillouette stock, and a black diamond Burris scope, all the necessary reloading equipment and used varget powder, I basically only got 62 rounds fired through it before I became totally and permanently disabled, my friend who built my rifle shot P.A.L.M.A. matches and after attending one of those matches I became interested in Long range target, he had received the distinguished rifleman medal shooting a M1 garand 3006 standing, sitting and prone at 300, 600, 800, 900 and 1000 yards, these days I shoot from a bench and at the moment have built my first rifle stock for a model 54 anshultz 22 caliber, just went out the other day and shot it at 300 yards, basically I just shoot for the fun of it these days, the 6.5 284 went on to become one of the cartridges for long range competition because of it's capability of holding as much powder as a 30 06 in a short action cartridge,used by many professional long range shooters, if you would like to see my hobbies including my 22 rifle visit my KZfaq channel @ Skunk Works Rifle 😎👍🇺🇸

Kerry, I think a lot of people are late to the party. That's the point. I have known about the 284 since I was a kid. It's just never been very popular. Why? It's a great cartridge! Was it just never offered in the right rifle? It seems to be gaining a bit of popularity over the past few years, I would like to see that continue before it disappears forever.
