I’ve always enjoyed the 300 sav, in the 99. Harvested a few deer with it also. Remember getting a 8 point muley at 60 yards, and getting a doe whitetail at 125 yards, shooting offhand and with a redfield rear peep sight.

Good to see information on these fine rifles. Absolutely my favorite saddle gun.

Thanks for the comment, Marco! I'm glad you bring that up! Everyone always talks about the short Winchesters and Marlins for saddle guns but the Model 99 is just as easy to pack around and get in and out of a scabbard. In my younger days, I spent many, many miles on horseback with my dad and grandpa. I believe my grandpa usually had his 300, my dad always had a 308 and I carried my 250 3000. All 22'' barrels, I've never thought about it before but I bet that's why my 250 doesn't have any bluing left on it. HaHa! Thanks for watching Marco, have a good one!

I have the same model, made in 1937. Mine was on the used gun rack about 30 years ago, a re-blue but well done. It has a slight crack at the end of the tang, but the wood is not oil soaked at all - just a typical Savage hand fit that was a bit on the tight side. With the origianl open sights it is almost boringly accurate. I find the re-loads I use are no trouble at all as far as reliable accuracy goes. The .300 cartridge is just that way for some reason. These days I tape a peep sight onto the lens of my glasses to see better, and it really helps. It's at the prescription focal point at all times, no matter what minor variations when I hold. I never could get the Marbles tang sight to line up right, so I went back to electrical tape with a clean punch hole of 1/16". I will never part with this rifle until they close the lid.

I got a 99 in 300 sav as a early Christmas present that my grandpa gave me right 2 weeks before hunting reason when I was 17. And he gave my brother a Remington 7600 in 30-06. It took a while for me to get ammo for it but I got 3 boxes of 150 grain Winchester super X. Got it cleaned up and sighted in before rifle season and got a stud of a 9 pointer with it on opening day. Left on hell of a blood trail which was very suprising. He kicked like a mule getting hit by that 300 savage and ran 30 yards before he started tumbling. The past 5 hunting seasons it’s the only gun I’ve touched and I plan on selling my guns to a pawn shop and just sticking to my 99

I've had a couple of different things 99's in 300 Savage 1948 EG and 1955 F. Still have the F. Before pandemic Hornady 300 making 300 Savage SuperFormance. 150 grain SST bullet @2920 fps out of a 24 inch barrel. One flat shooting, hard hitting sucker! Hopefully they will resume making that. Maybe with a better bullet.

Among all cartridges, the .300 Savage is in the top ten in the ratio of fps/per grain of powder. A very efficient cartridge.

It seems to be the least troublesome regarding inherant accuray, too.

But can a .300 Savage case be made from a .250 Savage case, I always wanted to know if that can be done, I thought the .300 Savage case was a .250 Savage case that had its neck and shoulder blown out to the same diameter as the .30-06 neck and shoulder, please correct me if I'm wrong. I tried looking on numerous sites about what which case (.250 Savage or .30-06) Savage took in order to make the .300 Savage, but they were all very vague and didn't say.

Adam, I'm not 100% percent sure, buuuuut from what I understand, the 300 was entirely it's own. Seperate from the 250. I have always heard that the 300 came from the 250 but have never been able to find anything to back that up. Everything I have found points to Savage engineers working directly off of the 30 06. That said, I don't think you would be able to use 250 brass for 300 without it being more trouble than it's worth.
