What kind of bizzaro world do we live in where the two best enthusiast "economy car" options on the market are a $70,000 Civic or a $50,000 Corolla? Literally what the fuck.

Thanks for the explanation of the AWD system. Engineering Explained had a good video about it but I didn't realize how much software was controlling the bias and even switching to FWD mode for straights. Makes a lot of sense. Great stuff. I bought a core with diffs a month ago and it's a very fun car.
@Vermonstered
@Vermonstered Жыл бұрын
Even the older Evo AYC AWD system has lots of software intervention. Car would go 100% FWD in every turn multiple times to prevent understeer because the front wheels travel a larger arc than the rear wheels. This is also why differential based AWD systems, like the Subaru system always was heavily biased toward understeer. Because the system has no way of decoupling the front and rear differential.
@LouisSubearth
@LouisSubearth Жыл бұрын
There's another video of GR Corolla on a liftand the guy identified the rear diff as the same as the one in the RAV4, so that explains the low thermal dissipation of it compared to a more expensive and purpose designed unit they could've used instead.

I have almost 2000 miles on my GR Corolla and I have to say you guys really nailed the description of the car and engine’s character. This is a very different engine in today’s world where in most modern turbo engines, torque comes on in the low end at like 2000-2500 rpm. On the GRC you really do have to wring it out to 4000+ and when you do, the surge is satisfying. But it’s a big part of the car’s character and why it feels specials. It’s why I really enjoy mine especially on the daily drive. And when I don’t feel the need to drive like a maniac it’s very tame and feels like an NA engine outside of boost. I was also able to get 34 mpg on a 116-mi drive, so there’s that too.
@dejan.

I think your closing statements are incredibly well put. To be honest, I was between this and the ELANTRA N, and I was coming from a 2022 Corolla hatchback. Naturally the GR Corolla felt like the perfect upgrade from that car, but by the time the opportunity came for me to buy one I couldn’t stomach the price considering how much the ELANTRA offers without nearly as many compromises in terms of capacity and livability, and downgrades in interior quality and space compared to a standard XSE Corolla Hatch. Great video.

I appreciate how natural the engine sounds in the driving section. I am so over the obnoxious fake engine noise that sounds like playing a Forza game from 10 years ago. It's too bad it took so long for Toyota to bring a car like this to the US market. Ditto for the Type R. I don't think many people will be able to afford a car like this unless they get very lucky finding one that isn't marked up to the moon.

Great review, and I'm glad you are grounded enough to admit that with current dealer mark-ups, that the GR Corolla falls short FOR THE PRICE. I was actually going to order one, and trade in my Focus ST towards it, but I couldn't justify spending double what I paid for my used ST for a Corolla.

I couldn’t do the smaller interior of the GR due to family but it looks like a fun car to blast around in. The inevitable $40k+ after markup seems excessive. The cool part about Hot Hatches is that in the past you felt like you were beating the system by getting awesome performance at a budget price. This doesn’t feel that way unfortunately.

I agree with every sentiment and statement from both of you guys in the value and fun of this car, if you pay at MSRP it is great for each trim at that price, l believe that for this and the new Z based on your videos that dove into details on that car due to the caveats of them needing a little aftermarket to fix their shortcomings for part track enthusiasts like myself and you all, cooling for the diffs on the GR and aftermarket suspension for the Z and an upgraded trans mount for the 1st to 2nd gear grind/lockout feel. I say this as an owner of a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 and a 2014 big turbo track build Genesis Coupe who had both a Z and GR Corolla on reserve but backed out one dealers wanted over MSRP and compared to just keeping what I have at the prices I paid vs buying basically newer versions of the same cars, it was a no brainer

Hearing you guys drive the Corolla reminds me of motorcycles like the Yamaha FZ-09 & Triumph Street Triple. Both amazing bikes, and it was only a matter of time before inline-3s would make their way into mainstream passenger vehicles, with how far turbo technology has come. This is basically the successor of the STi in spirit. The only big downside that can turn off most people is the really cheap interior. You can't really even argue that it was cost savings since they focused on performance, considering the way dealers have been marking the car up. If it had the interior of the Corolla XSE rather than the base Corolla, it would have been a no brainer for a lot more people. Hopefully they improve on it in the coming MYs.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this vs the Focus RS. I had a Focus RS for about 20K miles and really liked it, but the potential engine issues worried me a little, but I do want a similar experience again someday. This seems like a pretty similar car in many ways, though the AWD system in the RS seems like it allowed a little more drift. I do like the more raw feeling and less refined ride of some hot hatches like this GR and the RS. The Type R always felt too soft to me when I've tested the FK.

Just hit 6k miles in my Elantra N dct. Interior in the elantra is def better. The gr corolla looks like the interior of a base car still or the n-line model not full N. Being able to down shift under an underpass and having my car pop echo off the walls stock still hasn't gotten old. I've had no issues with my car so far, and i managed to do something no gr owner can say they have done before... pay under msrp for my car... i don't track my car, but i have gone on 300-mile road trips and bombed back roads, and it did those both well. For guys like you who get to drive new cars all the time im sure your view is different but for me coming from a 2009 pontiac g6 with a new CEL code for each day of the year i love my car more than any car I've been in. The only cars i test drove before the EN were a 2022 kia forte gt, a 2.0 and 3.6 genesis coupe, a base model corolla, and an Elantra N-line. The EN is leagues better than all of them. I respect owners of any car made towards enthusiast but i absolutely think i made the right choice for me.
