SAVED! RESTORING a mice & moisture damaged mid century dresser

This video shows how I scraped my way through the old, brittle finish on this mid century dresser, down to the raw walnut and nourished it back to life. This project took approx 2 days to complete.
This piece belonged to Andrea's grandparents; it was purchased by her father in 1962. Canadian made by VicArt, this gorgeous walnut dresser was unfortunately temporarily left in an unheated house for a few years and had mice making their home in the drawers. Luckily, we managed to salvage it and the matching tall dresser, as well as a headboard/footboard.

LOVE how beautifully this dresser turned out! The wood grain is stunning, and your refinishing methods retain the grace and integrity of the piece so well. I'm on the fence with painting/not painting the drawer pulls black... I think a flat black as opposed to a glossy finish would be the height of sophistication. New subscriber! This is only the 2nd or 3rd video of yours that I've watched--so enjoyable--I'm hooked!

I have to say that Mid Century Modern furniture was so well designed. I am so heartened as well that you saved Andrea's grandparents' furniture. It is an homage to their taste. As well, I'm glad that you kept the drawer pulls in their original finish. Maybe ten years from now you can spray them black for an updated look. But for now enjoy what the piece must have looked like the day her grandparents had the furniture delivered to their home. The manufacturer chose really beautiful walnut veneer. I love the two way veneer look. Bravo, Angie on your choice of finish!

It makes the death 100x worst. It was my entire family (including extended) vs my uncle. He took advantage of my grandmas estate in another state and sold it before she even died. Then no one knew until she died! She didnt even know because she told us all she wanted it to stay in the family for us all to enjoy. He cashed in and built a million dollar home. It was a lot of land that was in our family back from the 1800's. My cousin tried buying the land back, but unfortunately couldn't because it was sold to loggers.

As for the hardware, I'm pro keeping them the same. It's not because I wouldn't like them spray painted. It's because I like the authenticity of the past. Sometimes the hardware is very worn and spray painting uplifts them, or replacing them is necessary. In this case the hardware just needed cleaning and there's something very special about keeping the piece as is in memory of the grandparents who left them behind. You can always spray them in the future if you find You and your Partner would like it better. It's a fabulous piece and it looks great. I too am happy you were able to get it out of a destructive environment and refinish it to it's glory. As always, Great Work!

@marcnshawny
@marcnshawny Жыл бұрын
Silver was probably the right choice for keeping it authentic, but maybe even antiqued gold or brass, just a little downplay so the wood is the show rather than the hardware. Black would have really showcased the wood grain but this one already has such stunning contrast that it isn't needed. Just me.

Here’s a tip. Recently have cleaned out a tiny house that had a mice problem but wanted a non toxic or non smelly solution. Turns out mice and many rodents and insects don’t like peppermint oil, so I got some essential oil-peppermint and put a little on cotton balls and put them all over the house in cupboards, drawers, closets, and even under the house. It worked! 6 months later still no mice AND the house is in the county. Hope this helps someone! BTW I found the peppermint oil from WalMart worked great, later on I had bought some more expensive oils off amazon and it wasn’t nearly as effective, nor as strong a scent.

What a gorgeous piece! As soon as you started scraping, I was swooning over that walnut veneer! You did a beautiful job - it’s just stunning. As for the hardware … I’m not sure! The silver is interesting, but I’m not sure how it would look in black. I wonder if it would look good in a brass tone? I’m not generally a fan of brass/gold tones, but it could work here. Ultimately it’s up to you! You could try painting one and if you don’t like it, remove the paint and go back to natural. Whatever you ultimately decide, I’m sure it will look amazing! Well done! Angie, this is another triumph, and a testament to saving family history! The instruction in the video about using a carbide scraper is very well done and valuable for those of us who have not yet tried scrapers. Speaking of wood planes, have you seen EJ Woodhouse Restorations' channel? He uses a hand plane to remove paint and stain from furniture. The items all appear to be solid wood and they are not large, but it is an interesting process to watch. I look forward to your weekly videos and can't wait to see what you do nest!

You are so complete and concise in your videos, but still manage to keep them a reasonable length. I think that painting the hardware black would have looked amazing but leaving them their original color really suits this dresser as always you did an amazing job

GORGEOUS, Angie. That wood grain is just stunning and love the unique hardware. When I looked at the before shot, I would’ve said definitely paint the hardware black. However, now that the piece is so beautifully restored, I like it silver. Can’t wait to see the other pieces and thank you for sharing this labor of love.💜

Thank you, thank you, thank you for NOT painting EVERYTHING! This is GORGEOUS! Some things need painted because they are just too far gone, but an awful lot of people out there are painting over perfectly good, now RARE woods that SHOULD NOT be covered over with paint, but rather brought back to life to show off their peacock worthy splendor! Bravo, young lady!!!

Great restoration as always. That sectional couch brings back so many memories at friends' houses growing up. Would love to find a similar one. Perhaps in your next Odies oil adventure, weight the jar at the beginning and end of the project to give us a better perspective on how much you use.

what a treat! You can always paint the hardware later if you decide it would look better in the room. Growing up with desert pink and aqua tiles and walls, it took me a long time to come around to embrace mid-century. I can't say I miss it myself, but I love what you do with it.

I actually really like the original hardware, because it's different from what we typically see. Thank you for showing me the acid treatment, I have a piece that this will probably work well on! I have been debating about a Surfprep and I think that I'm going to save up for one, after seeing this. Odies definetly needs to sponsor you!!! It would be a win/win!!! I'm glad you are saving this for your partner, it's comforting as all heck to have pieces from family in our homes. The couch is divine...

So glad this furniture was saved. You have done a beautiful job of bringing out the grain of the wood. The vertical green on the bottom really makes the piece as far as I am concerned. So glad you were able to save the sofa as well it is a wonderful piece and all of it has such wonderful family history with it. Love your site

A scraper is a favorite tool of mine. When the finish is so dry and the crystals of the finish jump up and away as the scraper goes by, that's SO SATISFYING, isn't it?

Love that piece. Glad you had all the original drawer pulls and glad you kept their original finish. Loved that the original tag was still stapled inside the drawer. Reminded me of my grandparents. Those tags seem to say they know the furniture will outlive them so they’re just using for a little while before it’s passed on to the next owner. Notice you kept the tag! The sectional sofa was fantastic as well. I have a new love for mid century especially the dressers and chests. Great job
