Getting a Dean review is a real dream come true! DGGAP was a special one for me, my first public Doom release and a collaboration with my then-girlfriend/now-wife, who wrote the story text and gave me feedback during the mapping process. It’s imo less refined than many of my later maps, but there’s a lot of real love behind it. Very cool WAD company here, too 😁

Mouldy mentioned that he's not interested in stories in video games, during the interview with Nirvana. But I must say that Mouldy is one of the best storytellers among the doom level designers. Much appreciated for an another sawed-off wads episode! Since there are lots of well-designed doom wads with less than 15 levels.

MtPain saved most of the jokes for Over Board and I am all for it. The WAD's inherent silliness calls for it.

Lot's of cool picks this time, especially happy to see a feature of AD's Violence, which is a somewhat underrated banger. Cheers for granting some spotlight to Altitude, among the few works i made over the years, it's the one I'm the most fond of. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Just wanna thank both you and Decino for introducing me to Mouldy's work. Going Down is quite possibly my favorite fan made Doom WAD of all time (there's a few other contenders like JPCP, the Scythe series, and possibly Vanguard, which I'm playing for the first time right now actually and am extremely impressed by so far), and I never would've known it existed if not for your review of it back in 2020. I do think his fights are just a tiny bit unfair at times, but their sense of sheer delightful chaos, combined with his absolute peak aesthetic chops make for some of the most fun you can ever have in the Doom engine. As a result, Overboard holds the distinction of being the first Doom WAD developed by someone other than John Romero that I actually played *AT LAUNCH* instead of months or years later as I typically do. I was so ecstatic Mouldy had created a new mapset that I forced myself to stop watching Decino's runs of the levels so I could play the WAD myself first. And I was not disappointed :D And so as not to overshadow the rest of the video, I think I might also have to check out Altitude and Doomguy Gets a Puppy. The former's classic Hell on Earth aesthetic and boppin 80's midi look right up my alley and the latter... I mean. Puppy. Must rescue the good boi~ Violence looks like a solid weekend long distraction as well. Anyhoo, awesome video as always! Keep up the great work :D

Thanks for playing. Surprised you enjoyed Violence as much as you did, as I think it's solid but not too much beyond that. Closer to a B-grade release to me: good, but I feel capable of so much more, especially seven-plus years onwards from its release. Expect something new this year, should all go the way I want it to.

mad props for taking on entropy, that was the start of my obsession with challenging wads. had to learn so much about the game just to be able to tackle it. don't worry about the finale, it destroys everyone the first few times around - just as well i'm obsessed, since it took about 10 playthroughs to understand how it all fit together.

I'm surprised map 3 of Overboard didn't make the Arch-Vile cry; a "depth charge" is a kind of bomb of used to sink submarines. Also, the explosions that happen when you flush the toilet is a reference to something that really happened to a U-Boat in WWII.

YES!! OVERBOARD!! I was wondering when that one was going to come up. Going Down is in my top 3 WADs, so it's a pleasure to see its successor called on this show!

Overboard has surpassed Going Down for me. It's just teeming with creativity, and has the perfect length for a wad. I expected you would honor this wad with a separate episode, but the raving review definitely makes up for that. Such an amazing work. Also glad you included Entropy. I was in awe when I played this, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Nirvana went a little... overboard on that one.

It's welcome back time! :D (Sorry in advance if this is too big a wall of text) There are some exceptional Dean of DooM debut's here of mappers with hopefully plenty of potential to appear again later - tourniquet's first standalone (good starting choice with Altitute being so overlooked by Miasma and Mutabor), Big Ol' Billy, Benjogami, and Nirvana. I didn't have a great time with Black Label, but perhaps I need to replay it, and the rest of these wads range from good to outstanding culminating in one of the hardest two maps ever reviewed for DoD. Of course while Entropy follows in the footsteps of Swim With The Whales from SOW2 as the second last wad of the episode being its difficulty culmination and one of the hardest maps reviewed to date, Overboard is...FAR more than merely a "wind down". (That would have been Doomguy Gets A Puppy, had it been last.) Lasting no longer to play than some of the single maps covered in this episode, it still easily managed to be my 2022 wad of the year as well and had been one of my most anticipated 'very new' wads to appear on the show. mouldy gave the player a much easier time than Going Down with this tropical adventure, but not only retained actually improved upon what made the former so great to become possibly the cutest and funniest 30-60 minutes of DooM ever made. If it wasn't already clear mouldy deserved Hall of Fame, then Overboard removed all doubt. I think that's all for the most part, though I do want to give shouts to Violence as Valiance pun (quite true!) and the BTSXE1 midi used in TTTM put a smile on my face to hear Yugi use. I guess just a few footnotes. Excellent episode and looking forward to February :) Oh 33:44 hmmmm...I think I know what wad and map number that midi came from! As to not spoil anything potentially, I'll just say it's a gimmicky one and the map name is VERY literal...

Welcome back Dean, I hope the holidays and January were kind to you. You know, without this show I don't think I'd have gotten as invested in Doom as I now am. I started keeping a list of all the WADs I've played which also tells me how many I've finished total, that number is 70 as of typing this out. (Just finished Elysium's Curse by Bri who has swift become one of my favourite mappers.) 55 of those WADs as a low estimate I played after I found your channel and this show a bit over 10 months ago. Your mission statement is to spread the joy of Doom and you've most certainly spread it to me and continue to do so to countless others.

words cannot express how excited I was when I found out about Overboard and my excitement with it still remains to this very day, what an excellent comeback WAD from one of the GOATs all the other stuff shown off in this video also seems pretty cool, I'm probably gonna have to give "Doomguy Gets a Puppy" a spin sometime soon

I'm a fan of the scale and mutability of tourniquet's architecture: all the paths that wind through the space and the frequency with which the space will reconfigure itself to reveal an evil surprise. But somehow I had never heard of Altitude. It was great news to be informed that there was more in the vein of Miasma & Mutabor - thanks for including it in this episode!

Another great episode! Really glad to see you cover Overboard, it instantly became one of my all time favorites from day 1. As for the next Sawed Off Wads I highly recommend Syringe. I'm sure you've been asked to cover it before, but I just finished it recently and it was fantastic. All 7 maps are a blast and the soundtrack is just stellar. The bone chilling ending could also make it fit for this year's Halloween special (it's probably the first time a vanilla map genuinely terrified me). Either way I'd love to see it covered some day!

Ahh, we forgot to cover Altitude on the wiki... Going to be fixed momentarily, thanks for reminding me. And of course, excellent set of reviews as always, I felt like you were much more in your comfort zone this time, even in maps such as Entropy, it didn't give off the echoes of agony that Swim with the Whales provided. I've been on a bit of a Doom break lately, but the Sawed-Off series has me wanting to return to my old Games\Doom\source_ports folder. Nirvana's podcast has been a real treat to listen to recently, so I'm glad to see it get a shout-out here as well as his mapping work. Looking forward to the next DoD!

I Guess i wrote this some Time Ago, however, i love the Work and joy you put into playing and presenting all thos Wads. Because of you i downloaded many Wads and had a lot of fun. Thank you. Usually i have just an Iphone, Ipad and a PS5 to play the classic Doom. However i bought a Mini PC, a few month ago just to play all the good old Games. I grow up with Asteroids on the Atari 2600. I am now 47 Years old and still enjoy some good Wads for Doom.

DGAP brings me back to The Old Bean Factory from Sawed off Wads 2. Love these sort of jokewads that are actually good mapsets with a memey coat of paint.

When i went through overboard for the new game plus, i ended up changing the sky into a different red one to make the maps more menacing Best decision i made

Altitude is a brilliant map, Tourniquet has a monopoly on hyper vertical, non-linear maps with edge of your seat encounters. Though I know its unlikely you haven't, try out Mutabor for a good time. I think I prefer these to the normal videos, the variety makes it a bit more interesting to watch over a longer run time.

YEEEEESS I fucking love Overboard. It’s cheeky, irreverent, fun to play, and doesn’t stick around too long. Every map is enjoyable and there’s no filler. It was one of the first wads I played when I picked up doom again (after Lost Civilization) and I shill it at every opportunity.

Lots of cool stuff in this one! I've only played Overboard so far (because it's Mouldy, so it was gonna be good). Fantastic episode of pure fun maps, and the addition of a New Game+ was genius. I hope more small map packs do something like that in the future. I don't know how I've never heard of Violence before. It looks like a mashup of Valiant and Ancient Aliens, so that would be right up my alley! I also love me some Big Ol' Billy, so I'll have to play Doomguy Gets A Puppy ASAP. Like you said, Billy's maps just have this unique charm to them, and was the main reason I ended up playing a lot of the DBPs. Entropy is another map that looks absolutely gorgeous but I probably won't play it cause of its difficulty. I will gladly watch UV Max vids of that one (which I already have). Also, I can't confirm this, but I saw someone say that the Imp that flings itself off the sinking ship in Overboard Map 2 gets picked up by the Revenant brigade, and reappears with them when that fight happens. If so, that's another brilliant touch.

I was a little more harsh on the music with vocals on map 4 of violence, but I think we share the same opinion (it's weird), but map 3 was a blast! You've also convinced me to play Overboard. It was already on my radar, but you sold me 100%

Overboard is the next thing I've got to play after I finish Ancient Aliens (almost completed this one) and TNT: Revilution. I think Cyriak just can't make a bad Doom level, he's that skillful. And his sense of humor too... To be honest, I've kinda restrained myself from playing any of the skillsaw's wads, because thanks to your reviews I know how hard for me they are on UV, but now I just play on lower difficulties and actually having fun without sacrificing a challenge. Thus I recommend doing so for new players who's starting getting into community-made wads. Thanks for the video, MtPain! You made my evening.

Ive been on a paranormal binge lately and somehow missed a Dean of Doom!

For a next Sawed-off Wads episode would you please consider including 'Sacrament' from clan B0S? I cannot give the work sufficiently glowing praise. Its a 14-level wad from the early 2010's headed up by my favorite mapper Lainos. It has contributions from Archi, Wraith, and Azamael. It features custom weapon sprites, HUD, and custom MIDIs for each level. Sacrament really left an impression on me, i played it a year ago and im still searching for works that capture the same spirit and atmosphere as its second map: Doxylamine Moon. ... or um.. yo, Sacrament be fire fam. put in next show pls?

I would really like to see your opinions for the Dean of Doom series about Requiem, Eternal Doom, Whispers of Satan and Doom 1 & 2 (the way Id did) because those are the first community megawads (together with Alien Vendetta) I've ever played, I basically grew up with them

eyy I predicted Overboard! Also, you said you want to cover harder wads (like Entropy here), and this is not a request or anything, but would you think Sunder is something you would cover? I can't imagine how to review such a monster of a mapset, since each map, but especially new Sunder, would take you over an hour at least, and there is so much to cover for every map. Anyways, awesome video, glad to see you back!

Hell yeah new Sawed off! Black Label was the only one on this list I played and I thought it was fun. As an original Valley of Echoes enjoyer I thought the remake was good stuff. I really gotta play Overboard, it looks amazing. Altitude, Brigandine and Egg of Human Endeavors also look super interesting.

I wasn't aware of any of these releases but wow, to see Mouldy back with Overboard immediately caught my attention *edit, 24:43 I couldn't stop laughing for at least 6 minutes because that was a perfectly timed zoom in on the hapless Imp trying to escape that ship.

Ah, another batch of Doom morsels to try. Overboard was a fantastic comeback by Cyriak. The only bad thing about it is the fact that it's just a handful of maps and it's over way too quickly. Here's hoping he decides to make another full megawad some day.

Honestly, after playing through entropy(on Hey not too rough, which is still not easy by any means at least for me), I agree with your statement that it's a great way to get better at the game.

Call me sold on Entropy, looks quite fun. Would be interesting to see your take on Fractured Worlds by Nirvana. There's some very cool levels in that pack, and they aren't anywhere near as long as Entropy.

There is a Wad you may feature in the next Sawed-off Wads called Pagodia, That wad is intersting to say the least and worth checking out..

Violence wad has some of the Junkfood 3 weapons like the Plasma gun and The chaingun

Here to hoping that you review Bri's mapsets one day. He is a new mapper around the block, but his mapping skills are incredible. Stuff like Elysium's Curse, Hydrosphere and especially Fallen Leaves are definitely worth checking out.

Worth to mention about Overboard’s NewGame+ mode is very suitable for continuous playthrough where all weapons, health & armor are obtained from previous levels so you’re feeling like starting new game with maxed out stats!

Brigandine is the first fan map I played and it basically shaped my fan WAD taste. I can't play megawads full of filler content, maps with ridiculous monster counts or ugly maps now. I like short (both in number and playtime) beautiful maps with thoughtful monster placement rather than clouds of cacos and swarms of Revenants in hour+ slogs.

Interested in playing violence, recently i played the shit out of hotline miami, so seeing a doom wad with a synthwave ost and unusual color pallet sounds exciting to me.

I noticed quite a few doom WADs share assets with each other because I noticed certain customs skins pop up several times.

recommending Astroverse for amazing hard, primitive combat without many monsters (if your not a person that describe wads 'bad/annoying' without RL or SS), and of course No End In Sight is waiting too.
