Sawmillin at The Shack

Steve and I head up to the mill to get our hands dirty. We take a piece of Oak and Magnolia to create some lumber for projects. Just two guys having fun in the sawdust..

After hitting the nails, is that blade done, or do you re sharpen it? Greg

It will need a run through the sharpener and setter. I can usually fix them.

Looks like you guys had fun! I don't know anything about milling, but I'm curious, the first log you cut you left each cut piece in place and kept lowering the saw, but the second log, you removed each piece after cutting it?

Mostly cause we kept finding nails.. The oak was nail free

I have a question I figure you may have some knowledge on. I don't know my woods at all so be nice ;) I have a co-worker that asked if I want the logs from a pear tree they cut down. I am guessing they are 8-12" diameter. Figure I could slice them and diode laser on them? I don't know if there are different "pear-woods" But read they are a hard wood? I am guessing I could slice and let them dry, would the lasering smell like pears? LOL Worried the sap may be issues to the laser? Would they be okay as a trivet for hot pots? Any other ideas are welcome!

It should be fine if you can get them to dry without cracking. Pear is a wood that I haven’t milled yet. I would think it would be nice though. The sap shouldn’t be any worse than maple.
