@@YourPalA.D The lyrics to cha-la head cha-la describe teaching a dinosaur to ride a ball. There’s a joke in TFS’ The Revenge of Cooler video where Goku heals a bird using Ki and then says “Go Toriyama, and teach a dinosaur to ride a ball”. Tori = bird Yama= mountain That’s the reference. EDIT: small correction, the lyric says “if there’s a dinosaur, I want to train it to balance on a ball”, it doesn’t mention a bird specifically.

As a latino, Dragon Ball has basically become part of our culture here, its huge, the only i could put it in perspective is Dragon Ball is what Star wars is to the USA but times 100. feels like the whole latino community is in mourning. Hundreds of homages were made and are being made for him. Dragon Ball helped me made friends, bring my family closer together, inspire me to work out, to never give up. As some one put it. Today it is not the man you created who cries, but the child you helped grow. Dear Akira Toriyama, thank you for everything

@@destituteanddecadent9106a big part of it is the message to become stronger in the face of adversity. Life can be really hard over there and all kinds of shit can happen depending on who you are and where you're from. The uniting message to take it on the chin and get better connects a lot of people. That plus meme culture and the fact that it's had a long time to spread means basically everyone has heard of it. I know a few Latinos personally that really deeply look up to Goku in a way I'll never fully understand. I just keep seeing him smiling as Gohan gets destroyed
@ulises4241
@ulises4241 Ай бұрын
@@destituteanddecadent9106 Well it could be for a multiple of reasons. for one, Back then most Latin American Tv stations didn't have (and some still don't) the budget for animated shows, so most animated shows would be imported from other nations. While we did got USA cartoons such as He-man, gi joe, thundercats those were episodic with not a long running story arc or much character development, that's were anime was different. Latino audience graduated towards shows that did have story progression and character development. A funny way to put it is, anime was animated novelas for us haha. Not only did my generation, and the next one after mine grew up with anime, but many of the older generation also grew up with anime. With shows like candy candy, captain tsubasa (supercampeones) etc. It also helps that the dubs we got here were super loyal to the original Japanese, with little censorship or changes, keeping names of the characters attacks and keeping the og music, and with amazing voice actors, and tbh, many values and customs of Japanese culture are way more similar to that of Latino culture than that of lets say the USA As for why Dragon Ball was the one that really stood out and capture Latinos well maybe it was a shows that both grown ups and kids could enjoy together, maybe it was the character of Goku and his resilience never give up Ill quote Iker Ruiz to answer that "Toriyama's work went beyond simple battles between heroes and villains, there we found valuable lessons about friendship, courage, perseverance and self-improvement. Through his characters, Toriyama taught us that true power lies in the spirit and in the bonds we forge with those around us."
@orbboom6119
@orbboom6119 Ай бұрын
@@destituteanddecadent9106it was one of the first animes we ever saw, the dub was great from the get go, we didnt had to go through 10 different dubs, we saw Goku grow up thru out the story and we could connect more, the epic fights and alot of comedy, a perfect balance.

Toriyama was a natural innovator. Not only to shonen. But to the video game world, art world, and the cartooning world. He is literally the reason chibi designs exist. He is the reason faces are drawn on 💩. He is the reason the most well-known video game character exists (Mario) from his creation arale. Sonic, street fighter and SO MUCH MORE wouldn’t be the same without him. There’s too much to say. He’s one of the few creators where you can’t tell where his influence stops.

It's so crazy, his work really needs to be studied way more. The way his brain worked is something that we barely see, dude was creating things so unconventional to his time that he ended up revolutionizing ENTIRE GENRES. Innovation came unsought to him. He does need to be studied more. There’s so many things in the video game world, art world, anime world, pop culture world, cartooning world that is so normal and mundane today that we don’t even question where it came from. A lot of those things can be traced back to him somehow.

At 1:31:30 - Joey talking about how awful public transport in Sydney is inaccurate, understandable as he hasn't lived in Sydney for many years. There have been projects which has improved the situation over the years, such as the Sydney Metro, which makes trips much quicker and the Sydney Light Rail, which is nice because the CBD is more pedestrianized now, less car traffic. The main issue is infrastructure keeping up with population growth, entirely fueled by immigration. Also for context, where Joey lived was in Manly, the Northern Beaches region, a much richer and whiter part of Sydney that is secluded from the rest of Sydney and him growing up there skewed his perspective on how bad public transport is in Sydney.

I have seen twitter collectively come together in mourning twice so far: when Akira Toriyama died and when Kobe Bryant died. Kobe's death was massively impactful across the entire world of sports, and the suddenness of it as well as the tragedy of the others that died with him made it such a shocking event that it shook the entirety of social media. Toriyama's passing was sad, but it was also kind of comforting because of just how much people talked about his legacy and how his art had affected their lives personally, and everybody had a little story to contribute. Both experiences were very profound. It makes me thankful that despite all of the negativity and problems social media causes that on occasion it is very nice that people have such an accessible platform to come together on collectively to talk about something. On occasion, social media is a great thing for the world to have.

I mean he was making manga in the 80s which got a lot of people growing up with it, and its around the time when japanese anime and games came to the west. Not to mention his artstyle were perfect for marketing to children due to its "cartoon/chibi style" depiction which meant it was easier to bring it internationally with the manga and anime compared to something like Jojo by Hirohiko Araki due to its "adult" nature. Even Togashi who came few years later with yu yu hakusho was not as much marketable due to its dark nature of the show compared to the "fantasy/adventure" aspect of Dragon ball and it wasn't until DBZ it got a lot more matured/serious and could reach older audiences too. His work was made to reach a wide popularity in mind and took the advantage of good marketing that resulted in more people knowing about his work and allowed it to go on for so long.

I mean there would eventually come someone who would have done it too, anime was in its very early days of the 80s and as there were other big animes around the time there were also about to come other big ones around the corner who would have taken his spot instead, even some videogames would have filled that gap and spread it back to anime if so. I agree things would have been different and some tropes would have been pushed in to later years and JoJo references would probably be even more frequent than it is now.

After the trash taste live show in Toronto, me and my buddy briefly ran into the bois after the show. While walking past them, Connor complimented my shirt. I was wearing a goku and vegeta Tee that night. Even then Toriyamas work connected people and made a lifelong memory to look back on… rest in peace Toriyama.

The first anime that I actively watched as a kid was Dragonball then later down the line I started playing dragon quest starting with 11 and I thought the art looked similar, I then realised that Toriyama also did the art and character design for it and I fell in love with the game. Almost every single aspect of my life came from Toriyama's works or stuff that he worked on or things that inspired him. His greatness has sent ripple effects throughout media and everybody will miss him. RIP Toriyama, may you never be forgotten

RIP Akira Toriyama Adding to the topic of mourning someone who you are not a fan of, I mourned Kobe Bryant eventhough I never was a fan of him or basketball or have I ever watched it but the way he died and the impact he had on the world was so big of course I was sad and mourned him same with Miura I never watched Berserk but I mourned him too.

Same. I wasn’t a Kobe fan, but he was still a major part of my generation. I knew a lot of kids who loved him. Even w/o knowing anything about basketball, I know him and his daughter. So, his death especially the surprise effected me even as a non-fan. Also with Miura. Berzerk was a huge series for my anime gen, too. I know I need to see the series.

Toriyama’s passing is the first celebrity death I think has ever really impacted me. Dragon Ball has been apart of my life way longer then it hasn’t and it’s really sad to know he’s gone. But the outpouring of love and respect for Toriyama is incredible and it’s amazing to see. It’s just a shame it takes someone dying for people to stop being assholes. On the topic of mangakas health, there’s some like Yoshihiro Togashi, World Trigger’s Daisuke Ashihara and Black Clover’s Yuki Tabata who have severe health issues that lead to their mangas being on long hiatuses.

I grew up watching DBZ before starting school. It was the game my friends and I would always play, the show we'd debate over. The first show I binged when I discovered you could do that on the internet, the first manga I fully read through. At 30, I found myself tearing up thinking how influential Dragon Ball, Dr Slump, Cowa!, and Manga Theater was not just on the world, but on me. He was our Elvis Presley, Princess Diane, and Mr. Rogers all in one. RIP Toriyama-Sensei, we hardly knew ye

I think another impressive infrastructure that Japan did was converting above-ground train to subway train at Shibuya station. Although the project itself was 8 years, but that platform wasn't closed for normal operation. It was done within 3 hours or so during the night between last train and the first train.

I'm an architect student, and I always love it when people talk about the infrastructure in Japan. The times I've taken the public transportation there helps remind me that the quality of it can be possibly this good, it's just sad that almost no other nation has made it as good. Also I'm hoping to go for exchange in Japan for the chance to explore opportunities there in the creative industry, not specifically in architecture though.

As someone who's been a life-long Dragon Ball fan, I love that you guys put such a focus on Toriyama's passing this episode and talked about it to such a degree. He's influenced the lives of so many people and touched the hearts and minds of more people than he would ever have expected to in his time, and his loss is a massive blow to everyone who has come into contact with anything he has influenced or produced in his life. Rest in peace to an absolute legend, gone but not forgotten

The amount of impact and influence Toriyama had on media and people is unreal. When the news hit I was devastated and that's one of the few time a celebrity passing has got me very emotional, and I was crying on and off the next two days. It was just way too soon. I'm excited to finally get my DBZ tattoo next week, been wanting to get it for a while now but definitely feels like no better time than now. Thank you for everything, Akira Toriyama. Fly high.

Everything Toriyama touched was iconic in its own right. He took over gag comedy with Dr Slump, took over battle shonen with Dragon ball. And he also decided to make some of the most iconic designs for some of the most iconic video games with Dragon quest and Chrono Trigger. This man's influence cannot be understated. RIP to the GOAT
