Seeing Backpack Boy's and Coconut Head's names on the sign up sheet reminds me of Recess's "New Kid" episode. Like how Gus's real name is overwritten by his nickname in his life, Backpack Boy's and Coconut Head's real names are overwritten by their nicknames.

Back in High School the school had Computers in the Library and different Laptop Carts. Teachers would either take a class to the library to use computers or bring a Laptop Car to the Classroom.

7:25 This accurately reflects my experience with the computer lab in elementary school. (Since it was about an average-sized school, we also had another computer lab that we called the net lab, and it wasn’t used in the same way, but it was still used very often; I think its most common use was for students preparing for benchmark and state-administered exams.) In middle school, we didn’t have a computer lab; instead, every teacher had a cart of laptops issued by the school district that students were free to choose at random in order to complete their assignments. (You can imagine there were a lot of breakages, but that didn’t stop them from being used.) These computer carts were issued to just about every teacher, notably except those who taught special electives (band, for example, didn’t really need work done on the computers very often, but computer science was a special case because they had full-scale Windows computers set up in the classroom.) In high school, they started doing this thing where they issued a laptop to every student, and we were expected to keep up with them as much as possible because they would be used in almost every class.

I will say in high school that there was some kids who were complaining about how we need to do like PowerPoint presentations on the computer for projects and that some people were hesitated to use the computer to type down documents. Our principal actually walked into the classroom and heard about the complaints and that he’s telling them how lucky we are to have this kind of technology because back in his day when he was a student, they didn’t have computers or the internet. They just had typewriters and books. So I would say his encouragement really did allow the students to get more focus on how to use the computer and it was pretty helpful as we were able to get our work done.

I graduated high school in 2018 and we didn’t have a formal computer lab. There was a computer area in the library, but it wasn’t really comparable to a computer lab. I remember once in English class we went to the library as a class to do research for a paper and computers were available for those who wanted to use them

I remember in high school we did had a computer class during my freshman year and there was a bunch kids who somehow knew how to make the computer opening screen upside down and we let the teacher know the computers not working just to get off from schoolwork. This was back when we had the desktop computers with the Dell model. I actually found out how easy it is to make the screen go upside down so there’s no way that that would happen during class today.

Cookie aged in a very interesting way I didn’t think about till seeing you watch this episode … save for a few specific things cookies tech is basically just the equivalent of using a smart phone with extra steps. Like honestly if this was made today it would be very easy to imagine cookies tech getting broken and learning to see the world for a day getting replaced by someone’s smart phone being broken and learning to see the world for a day : P kinda funny how that aged.

I remember we did do some computer related stuff before. Sometimes if we were all caught up on assignments we could play some computer games but that was a special occasion. And in my days of going to academy my teacher his name was Mr Richard who i consider a very inspirational teacher and kind of the person who helped me find myself again worked with me on a Windows 7 PC desktop in the computer room to work on my graduation speech using Microsoft PowerPoint. And that speech which was called Look at me like i Matter turned out to be the best and grand finale of school assignments i ever done and was actually used to help my other teacher from my previous school give a good speech to his graduation class so my speech inspired 2 teachers to say a final sendoff to another graduated class from my previous school. Safe to say that computer time was well spent and was the most important time I had during my final months of school

Yes, whenever there’s a computer lab room, we always go to use the computer lab as a whole class whenever the teacher said so. We never actually go to the computer lab individually. The only time that I’ve seen kids use the computer individually was the computers at the library within the school. There was never no sign-up sheet. It was all first come first serve and if the computers are full you have to wait until somebody’s finished with their computers so you can use it yourself.

Whenever I went to the computer lab it was always with a class so I never really had a reason to mess around and waste the time. However the computers in the library at my school were often misused for non-academic purposes. (Like playing games instead of working on assignments). So many times Study hall’s were limited in how many they could send to the library and when you were there the computer use got very restricted.

I loved The Oregon Trail! I think that was a pretty standard love for a lot of people. I also remember playing Glider and Lemmings on school computers. In elementary school I remember Kid Pix, that was pretty fun. Once again it was a pleasure to watch this classic with you and to hear your commentary on it. I hadn't considered that computer labs were probably obsolete in today's schools, but then again I haven't thought of a computer lab in general in a very long time. My son has had school issued laptops in the past, it makes sense that kids would have something like that at their desks and then the classroom becomes the computer lab as necessary. Until next time, cheers! EDIT to add this high school memory that just came to mind. A friend of mine, for reasons I still don't know, wreaked havoc on the school computers in the library one year by opening .exe files in notepad and deleting random lines of code and saving them that way. When he was finally caught he got a suspension and the following year he took IT classes and of course when they recognized him on the first day they had to call out how he'd given them a run for their money the previous year.

Funny thing about the whole not doing the assignment thing… in middle school, for social studies, we had to pick a state and write information about or something. It was going to be for the social studies fair. (We had both a science fair and a social studies fair.) I was always a good student, my teachers liked me. But I had no idea what to do with this project. Days would go by and it was getting too late to ask. It was actually the day before the project was due. Luckily for me, a student was done with her project. She showed it to me and I kept her project in my mind the whole day. When I got home, I got on my computer, did what she did, but used the state was I was assigned to instead. It was a good thing I had internet and a printer. I never had internet when I was a kid. Loved playing physical computer games, didn’t get internet until late elementary school or early middle school. I did my project that night, then the next day… it was a snow day and school was canceled. But after that, I turned in my project along with other students. We all did so bad on the project, we weren’t allowed to be in the social studies fair. Kind of funny, but the teacher never explained what we did wrong. Also my state project was on North Carolina. I wanted to do Tennessee because I just have vacationed in the Great Smoky Mountains and visited Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. But someone already picked that. Ironically my family would actually go to North Carolina in a couple of months, which I didn’t know we were going.

I dont know how but someone found a way to download and hide the 1st halo game onto one of the computers in the lab. There was a specific combination of files you had to open to find the game. Any computer could also access it because the files were shared. Before summer break the teacher at the lab let the students host a halo lan party because the lab was getting renovated and the old computers were being removed.

I remember in elementary school for my later years, going to computer class, we would first learn how the computer works. Then at the end, play computer games. Like SimTown, The Oregon Trail, I think the 1985 version and a game, which was my favorite, Reading Mansion. Which despite the name, had nothing to do with reading. It was like a hidden object game, you explore a mansion and find stuff on the list. Middle school was similar, but different types of games. We were allowed to go on school-appropriate websites and play games online. There was one game the whole class would play together. I really wish I remember the name because it was fun playing. You could play online or with the computer itself. I would play that game at home sometimes. I never stayed in the same school. One elementary school was from kindergarten to the first half of second grade, I moved and went to another elementary school the second half of second grade to fifth grade. One middle school was sixth and seventh grade, moved and that middle school was just eighth grade. For high school, I didn’t move. But went to a vocational- technical school for ninth and tenth grade and for some reason, a regular high school for eleventh and twelve grade. But for my vo-tech high school, one day after school a couple of classmates and I snuck in a computer lab. One of the students had a key and we just hung out.

Cookie having the same schedule as Lisa is a little bit different from how it would work in my experience. I remember that students having the same schedule was common for my generation in sixth grade, but when later grades came, they opened up more class options that made it more difficult for this to happen. They also had a regular thing where they separated boys and girls in physical education (that includes athletics, too), so the only way they could be grouped together in that category is if they were taking tennis PE (which, as I’ve said before, is something I’m used to seeing separated from both regular PE and common athletics).

I’m almost 25 and I don’t know what DOS means. I’ve had computer classes but I’d say now that we have carry on Mac books or apple laptops, also I learned there’s a secret ‘game’ in Microsoft office 95 If allowed I’d like to send you a link to it if you’d want.

DOS - it’s like the “command prompt” on modern computers, except that’s all there was pre-windows.

Do you have any interest in reviewing the King Of The Hill episodes: s2 Bobby Slam (focuses on P.E.) or s3 To Spank With Love (discusses discipline)

This episode is definitely one of the more dated ones. In an age where technology is rapidly evolving, it was only a matter of time. Still, the episode will never not be entertaining.

There is certainly a conversation about how kids are forgetting some skills because the computer is doing things for them, but I think lately that goes for classical computer skills as well. I'm 23, and I think my age group got exactly the right amount of computer education vs non-computer education. The kids slightly younger than me do rely on their computers for everything, but at the same time they are clueless about how to use computers. iPhones and Chromebooks are so simplified that it takes all of the work out of using a computer as a tool, so they're lost with anything else. I have seen people not know how to save a file to a specific location, organize their folders, install and uninstall programs with installation files, and other basic things. I believe they can't do these things because, for example, files aren't even accessible on iPhones. Have you seen this loss in computer literacy over the years or am I insane?

Without a doubt, the way that computers are used and are designed to be used have definitely changed since this era.

5:00 Kids goofing off on the computer when they're supposed to be working was very much a thing when I was in high school. I know because I was one of those kids. In fact I took it a step further and carried around a flash drive full of emulators for old game systems, I could plug it in and instantly be playing old Nintendo games.
