this was a life saver! I was just about to change out the oil my scion, along with the transmission fluid. but in walmart i didnt see Dexron 2 or 3. So would MaxLife ATF work just as fine? if it says its for most GM,Honda and Toyota would do just fine? I know its says its recommended for Dex 2 and three.. im jus a bit OCD haha, and doing all this to save myself bucks from the mechanic.

wendigo Glad to help! Thanks for watching. I think the maxlife would be fine. You can get the exact fluid at the Toyota dealer for pretty cheap or on amazon, but if those aren't options go with Maxlife.

Thanks! Will do 🤘🏽 another question, do you think a transmission flush is required for a scion? I'm not the original owner of the Xa and it has a littler over 200k miles. Not sure it's last oil change or transmission. Recently has bought and changed the catalytic converter. Before hitting the road with it, I plan on changing those two things along with brake and rotors for a road trip. I skimmed through the manual online but couldn't see anything about it really. The transmission fluid as far as I can tell doesn't look too bad, doesn't look black or burnt but slightly losing that reddish tint with some brown in it.

If your not the original owner I would change the oil and transmission fluid, unless you have the history of the vehicle, assume the first owner didn't do anything to the transmission. Also you should check your both the cabin and air intake filters. Then the spark plugs and belts.

Must have missed this comment, but @macross is on point. I've done the plugs and belts on this car once, but that was before I was making videos. I do however have one on the air filter change and the cabin filter video will be happening soon.

The trans filters aren't supposed to be changed on Toyota vehicles, as the filter is just a screen mesh filter, unlike the American car like Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge which are paper filters.

I have an 03 Matrix which is basically the same thing. Trans fluid is cheap, has a drain plug, and it only takes about 30 minutes, so I do a D/R every 10 - 12k miles. No problems at all and it's the best and cheapest trans insurance. Easier than an oil change.

Good video with great visual description of the process. One thing I noticed is that the new gasket at one edge at least was extending outside the pan. Would that be a problem?Did you see any dirt/residue inside that ‘filter’ / screen and on any of the two magnets? On hindsight was it really necessary to drop the pan to change the screen and gasket?
@InTheGarageDIY
@InTheGarageDIY 6 жыл бұрын
First off, thanks! I didn't see anything unusual in the old filter or on the magnets. Just the normal very fine metal powder. I did the filter and gasket as kind of a "while your in there" type maintenance. The car had 100k on it so I figured why not since the filter and gasket were both cheap. It wasn't leaking or anything though. It probably would have been just fine to change the fluid and carry on.

oh, and as long as the bolts go through the pan and gasket you will be good. The gasket had some overhang all the way around the pan.

My wife and I have 2005 & 2006 Scion xB's w/ over 160,000 miles on each...neither has had transmission fluid or filter changed ever...I've heard to just drain and reuse fluid since they've never been serviced? What is your opinion on this? I'm told if replaced with new fluid, it may cause them to start slipping? Thanks. Also, did you get the filter kit from the dealership as well, or online? Thanks again.
@InTheGarageDIY
@InTheGarageDIY 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think changing the fluid will cause any slipping or weird issues with the transmission, unless you just don't refill it all the way. The idea of "lifetime" fluid is a joke in my opinion. I've changed the transmission fluid on every vehicle I own and I've never had an issue. I got the filter kit and fluid on RockAuto I think, but I doubt the dealer would be that expensive.

@TheWilferch

@@InTheGarageDIY ....doesn't quite make sense. Let me explain. When you removed the drain plug....some fluid came out. When you later removed the "filter" ( which is another "pan" inside"), you lost another amount of fluid. And then later working in various points of the car....you later lost some more again. I think there were 3 times where you lost fluid during the whole process of the vid...... where you likely used the 3-4 quarts of capacity per the manual. I don't think you drained ALL the 3-4 quarts right away with only the drain plug....right?
@InTheGarageDIY
@InTheGarageDIY 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheWilferch I see. Yeah, not all of it came out just by removing the plug. Sorry I can't help you decide how many quarts to buy. Do you have a dealer close by if you needed to return the extra that you don't use?
@TheWilferch
@TheWilferch 5 жыл бұрын
@@InTheGarageDIY ...it's not too big a deal if I buy too much.... just thought you ( or maybe others here who watched your vid)....can help me narrow down to what the initial drain volume might be. I think I will only do a plug-drain. Car runs great.....trans fluid is pink/red and no brown at all....even though the car has 240,000 highway-only miles and runs great. Interesting tidbit..... fluid level shows 1/2" OVER top fill mark when the engine is OFF and COLD ( not the recommeded method)...BUT.... is perfectly at top of the top-two HOT marks after a long hot drive, measured engine idling, as it should be checked.
@marv9906
@marv9906 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the fluid stays in the transmission and gear assembly even when you think you drained it all. The only way to truly replace all of the fluid is by flushing it with new fluid then measuring exactly how much fluid you put in to equal the amount the tranny needs. Otherwise youre just mixing new fluid with old fluid

Juan Martinez seals get messed up and the pressures rely on the gunk to stay strong in some cases when you clean those you end up creating a situation where you have less pressure than needed to shift proper. You are taking a chance but you are also taking a chance if you don't.

I thought you had to check the fluid with the car at operating temperature, running and in gear? I really don't like where they put the drain plug. It should be at the lowest part of the pan. For those of us not dropping the pan we're missing out on a lot of fluid we could otherwise get out.
@TheWilferch
@TheWilferch 5 жыл бұрын
Although this is an excellent tutorial..... let's go over some other alternatives. The REAL question is to FIRST check the color of your fluid. If it is pink or nearly so....then you are working with still-good fluid. Fluid that is brown/pink indicates some burning going on....and is a candidate to change. The hard question is this--> if your fluid is dark brown, then there was burning going-on and likely some small shards of friction material floating around. A change to NEW fluid at this point...may actually not be good, as the floating particles actually help the friction plates work as intended, to avoid slip for an already-partially-damaged friction plate. Maybe leave it alone. ................ HERE's another interesting tidbit.....for this EXACT CAR.....my mechanically-identical 2005 Scion xA with 249,000 highway miles on it, and perfectly pink fluid.....has written RIGHT ON THE DIPSTICK NECK PLUG.....these words--> " No need to replace ATF under normal driving conditions". Seeing that my fluid at nearly 250,000 miles is still like-new pink....I may do nothing or maybe just do a partial-drain via the plug, and replace the 1 qt (?), that comes out of this 3.2 qt system. I think this point should be noted by those who are following this, as most will likely be xA or xB owners. Some follow-on comments....the manual defines "not-normal" driving as PREDOMINANTLY driving in desert or dusty conditions OR towing. Key word "predominant" or "mostly". If not those 2 things, then Toyota calls this "normal" driving , in other words, even occasional towing or driving in dusty/desert conditions still puts you as "normal" driving, not "Extreme" and therefore the normal ( "no-change-out") recommendation holds.
