I have read that Scooby Doo was somewhat based on a popular 50s show called ' The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis'. Maybe that's where some of its momentum came from. I've not seen much of either show.

I think you’d really enjoy the Zombie Island movie from the 80’s. The monsters are real in that one, they all have complex and understandable motivations, and the characters are way more self aware. Also the Mystery Incorporated series from 2010 is fucking hilarious
