Yep. No way your finding a good 5th Gen Camry for under $2k unless the thing was beat to death. I had a 2004 Camry SE. Bought it used with 18k miles. Drove it until it had 188k miles. Best car I ever owned. I didn't even know squat about cars back then, so the only maintenance I performed was to swing by Valvoline Instant Oil Change every few thousand miles. So even with a lot of neglect, this thing held up heroically. I eventually gave it to my oldest son and purchased a 2014 Camry SE Sport. My son within one-years time destroyed my beloved Camry. He never changed the oil, he drove it almost always on empty, and he smashed in the front grill. Eventually the engine gave out (surprise, surprise). Best car I ever owned.

Bought from the original owner who purchased it new in 2002 and used it as a daily commuter for 18 years, and who kept detailed logs of all maintenance and repairs, and kept all original parts, floormats, marketing materials, etc. It's like a time capsule. @@jaynikk758 Yes-it’s at 305K miles now. The 4-cyl 2AZ-FE engine does quaff a quart of oil every 1100-1300 miles, but the mechanics say that’s “within factory specs”, and the cat and O2 sensors don’t seem to care. I’d take a couple pics of the car and odometer for you, but my 22yr-old son has it in suburban D.C. for a summer internship. It’s the best $5K I’ve spent on a car (bought from my MIL 12 years ago).

I remember when my dad first bought his 2002 camry, 17 years later and he still has it with 260,000 miles. Driven cross country, neglected, and in several car accidents but still drives strong. Only problems we’ve had were a radiator leak 5 years ago and a bad starter/alternator a few years ago, which is relatively nothing compared to my mom’s dodge magnum. Now I do all the maintenance myself and detail the interior to keep the leather clean.

I hated the styling when these came out but was impressed when I took a rental for a brief spin. The VVTI engine is very zippy off the line (I like that), it handles around corners supremely without an ounce of body roll and the controls, while unexciting to look at, were very ergonomically placed. @Adam Fears I did lol. The car has 113k miles and I got it exactly a year ago at 102k. My dad bought it from an old lady for me as my first car. The weird thing is it shifts pretty good until I've been driving around and running it through all the gears for about 30 minutes. It kinda jolts forward and shutters, sometimes even 3-4 seconds after it shifts. I thought it might have been something like the U joints or the torque converter, so I asked Scotty and he said it was just the transmission and to get rid of it. Thanks for the input though 👍

My first car is an 03 Camry SE. Its still my current car. 230,000mi. Other than foggy headlights, it looks showroom new inside and out. It’s the easiest car to work on in the world I just swapped the alternator yesterday morning after it’s 18 years of service.

@@maxwellsandhu7469 I bought a 2005 4cyl Camry for 2400, and the engine has been solid. However, things do wear over time, and also I am in Iowa now and it's been in it the Midwest all 15 years of it's life. All the things I had to fix were basically issues of either rust from salted roads, or wear and tear of a car over 200k. I had to put new front struts, new gas tank, new rear sub-frame which also meant new control arms and hardware. Oh and a new wheel bearing. Oh and the tranny fluid service was due while I had it. All in spent about 5k in repairs and maint over 2.5 years. BUT the engine has always ran smooth and it's been super reliable IE starts right up and runs strong every time. So yes be prepared to put in money on a high mileage vehicle, but too me this is one that has been worth it as I foresee it easily going over 300k and I'm hoping to 500k. It still looks great and rides smooth. I wouldn't sink all that money into any car other than Toyota or Honda. Hands down.

Thanks Scotty for this video. I really appreciate it because I love Toyota cars since I was in my country Puerto Rico. I bought my 2.4L 2005 Camry 3 years ago from a friend with 130,000 miles. Now it has 252,000. With the COVID-19 quarantine and the social distancing recomendations I have some time to do maintenance other than oil changes. Yesterday I replaced the valve cover gasket and took a look to the time chain and was as firm as new. All the head components couldn't be better. Overall is a very good car to own and a very easy to work with. The 5th, 4th, and 3th generations of Camry are, in my opinion, the best Toyotas ever made. Of course, it would last "forever" with proper maitenance, specially engine and transmission oil changes. I hope mine is one of those still running when reach 500,000 miles...

Bought a cheap 2000 Toyota Echo for my new driver teenage daughter. It needed a clutch so we have been having fun wrenching on it together. I’m impressed with the quality of the wiring harnesses in a 20 year old car. No dry rot or brittle plugs or looms. 20 years and 200k miles and the rear main was still holding, although since I was pulling the flywheel to resurface it I decided to spend the 2 minutes to swap it out. It too uses a timing chain which makes for a plus. While it wouldn’t be worth paying a wrench bender the time it takes to get into this thing to change the clutch, the time I’ve been spending on it has been working with my daughter so that’s been rewarding for both of us. And no, she’s not just handing tools to me but turning wrenches herself and running impacts.
