Scrapping Metal from an Instant Pot and Smelting Ingots How Much

Been wanting to do this one for awhile! Instant pot is a pretty big name in home appliances and even though it isn't likely to have a large amount of copper inside, I'm still curious to see just what goes into these things. So let's find out! By melting it into bricks haha.
Wire stripper I use: amzn.to/3sirg18
The motorized stripper: amzn.to/3y0JMuQ
The wire cutters I like: amzn.to/2T6j3OW
The grips I recommend: amzn.to/2QCJmYl
The melting furnace: amzn.to/3EGxT2q
(If you make a purchase on amazon through the links above, a small amount of what amazon makes on the sale is shared with me. It's a great way to help support my channel, at no additional cost to you. Even if you buy something other than my tool recommendations!)
Please like/share this video if you enjoyed it, and subscribe to thubprint!

I read the title as melting ingots in an instant pot and was intrigued. When I saw you disassemble it, I thought "How funny, is he going to smelt an instant pot in an instant pot?" but soon it clicked that I must've misread lol.

Hey Thubprint! You've inspired me to start scrapping! A couple of my local garages have actually been PAYING someone to pick up there scrap. I said I'd for free and they liked that! My problem is my junkyard only pays 20cad/ton for shred and 50cad/ton for steel and they class everything above 3.5mm as steel. I see most people are getting like 190/ton for prep!! Im hoping the copper from alternators/starters will get me by.

@pearsonschofield7626 Those prices are low. In Vancouver I’m getting $220/2000lb ton for tin (appliance, bikes etc) $175 for shreddable (fridges) and $275 for steel Where are you? Are there any other scrap yards close enough by to make the drive worth it? If so I’d suggest collecting enough material to make dedicated loads (all shred or steel or non ferrous)

@@mayfieldmetalrecycling7012 I'm in st johns, every yard on the island quoted within 5 bucks of those low prices sadly. The yards are all pretty small compared to what I've seen in people's videos or when I used to live in Nova Scotia. They don't sort past shred or steel and copper is either copper for 5$lb or wire for 2.3$/lb.

Just an FYI, "smelting" is the process of separating metal from it's ore. You are just melting.

I'm just wondering, aside from the satisfaction factor of having nicely minted ingots, is it worth the propane usage in terms of the cash value of the metal?
@thubprint
@thubprint 4 ай бұрын
It absolutely is not lol. Some people will tell you “you can sell them on eBay for ten times the price of scrap!” Which is kind of true, but you need to be making artisan quality ingots (sanded, polished, no visible porosity). From a financial standpoint, it’s a waste

might not be efficent but was enjoyable to watch nonetheless, perhaps something more substantial next time will be more rewarding. I hink object/appliance selection might be the key. Keep the aluminum 80 years left in the world before we run out and copper 200 years as future investments #ThubStax and scrap the rest
@thubprint
@thubprint 7 ай бұрын
Yeah I don’t expect stacking aluminium bricks to pay off lol. This one I didn’t think would be loaded with copper, there’s no reason it would be, but given the appliance name itself had ‘brand power’ I figured there might be some gas there
@marksteps1712
@marksteps1712 7 ай бұрын
@@thubprint I did say a future investment lol, obviously not aimed at you short of you planning on living for another 80/200 years respectively, more an investment for your grandchildren who'll thank you i'm sure whilst the world digs through our old landfills to make heat syncs etc. yeah true, yeah you'd have thought. Anyway for what it's worth I enjoyed it, take care and stay safe. Peace and love
