All scrap yards I deal with take the electric motor copper as #2 with strings and all. I put the copper windings with my #2 solder/dirty/painted copper.

I asked my yard about the strings and they to me they had to be removed, I do let a few go though, and yes it is #2 copper as it has a thin insulation on it. Thanks for stopping by

Love taking motors apart! Any ideas on how to get the copper out of the large size motors?
@Okiescrapper
@Okiescrapper 3 жыл бұрын
if you are talking about the big motors with the cast iron shell, I have done a few of them years ago, and I would take a 8 lb. sledge hammer to them and break the cast iron to get the stator out, some videos where they use hydraulics to crack and split the shell. like a hydraulic shop press, and a splitting wedge.

Some electric motors (known as 39 frame type) used in a/c and air circulation were wound with aluminum, starting back in the 70's and 80's. Not sure if they'd be worth the time to scrap out.

Are there sometimes motors come across that are worth NOT scrapping? I'm told some motors are capable of MAKING electricity when moving in its opposite operating direction. People who live near streams or moving water could easily cut power bills from their lives forever, not to mention cut pollution down significantly with a good working vintage elec motor.
@Okiescrapper

Are you in Oklahoma? I am in need of 4 motors (DIY electric car) so you get the idea of size and torque I need. I would be interested in travelling a modest distance(from OKC) to pick them up if you could set aside some motors you think might be useful. I'd pay you, lets ballpark it at 3x your predicted scrap value. I'd request 8, considering some may be burnt out, but I would take them all and do my own testing. I'm just assuming you're in OK based on the name "okie" and the red dirt on your property. *Edit*(9:13 And words, I hadn't gotten this far before posting. You should be able to contact me within KZfaq, or just reply here and I'll see it in my email; we can go from there. I found your channel a couple days ago looking for furnace designs and find your content very interesting and helpful. Thanks for your consideration. P.S. If you are not interested, a quick reply of "no thanks" would be appreciated so I'm not holding my breath.
