Greetings Chuck. Your observations about this KZfaq community is so true. You are the gentleman i will always call the Johnny appleseed of my channel. Meeting you and Jo for the first time in person was something I looked forward to for a long time. I will consider you a friend to the end. Stay well sir. I look forward to our next giant steak 🥩.

Chuck, had some health issues of my own and just went back to watch the videos I missed. I'm going to get one of those power cords and get my shop better organized.

Hi Chuck, Spot on about this community...amazing bunch of folks and support.. Wishing speedy recovery for all going through times.. On the milling question; I vote horizontal with a small face or shell mill. It would be nice to see "the little mill than can" ATB.....

Glad to see you back to machining and not making Chinese infomercials.

Thanks for the shout-out Chuck! Yeah, I'm praying for Matty and our other KZfaq friends who are having problems.

Thanks for the promo Chuck. In my view the KZfaq community is like an old school enthusiasts clubhouse but on a global scale, Being international, it brings benefits like cultural exchange, building tolerance and a wonderful diversity of views. I would use your first option for machining the back plate but I would put a big bolt down through the centre of the assembly to help resist the side cutting forces when machining the flats. As you say though, there are multiple ways of skinning the cat. Regards, Mark

There is something marvellous about our KZfaq community that is full of friends and helpfulness to each other, something the other (un)social media could learn from with their petty minded beliefs in fantasy and hate. Anyway back to the helpful bit, holding that piece by a short relatively small diameter stub should be fine for drilling, axial load, but I suspect if you try to mill flats it that it will work loose with side loading by using an end mill. Can you put a long bolt through to add security? Much the same would apply on the horizontal, I suspect. Big chunk of metal held by a small stub, leverage comes into play. To quote Mr Spock, live long and prosper C

It has been a rough year for our community that is for sure.

Hi Chuck, The spigot that you are currently planning to use to grip the job is quite small. If it were me I’d invert the job and hold the larger diameter to machine the flats. Always a pleasure stopping buy your channel.

If you have two or more transfer screws that need to be hit its best to press them in an arbor press in order to squish them down onto your work all in one movement.

I got to tell you Chuck the youtube machine shop community is riddled with cancer not to mention the many other ailments that old geezers get. I think my count is up to about 10 and that is just the channels I watch. The granddaughters cat (Frankennstien) has been laying on my laptop pc and has got hair all over it. The tail stock chuck will probably come in hand when you least expect it. Looking good so far. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.

Hi Chuck, I'm sure this will be a great addition. I have a tailstock 4-jaw and it's great for irregular work or pulling work into centre at the tailstock end. Cheers Paul

Why do it the easy way? Use the horizontal mill. New problems to solve is always the best way tp proceed. I looking forward to the finished product. KOKO!

How important is the balance of the flats for spin speed .
@terrycannon57011 ай бұрын
Why does it need the flats? If you have a slab cutter for the horizontal mill, why not mount in the rotary table 90 degrees to the table and cut it that way. I have 2 vertical mills and one horizontal mill. My plan is to set up the horizontal for gears and keyways and that way I am not back and forth on the vertical mills. My experience is the horizontal will get used more if it is used on kinds of work that do well on the horizontal mill.
