Frank (Bill Murray) hops in a cab, but realizes that the driver is the Ghost of Christmas Past (David Johansen) who takes him on a wild ride back to his childhood.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A darkly comic and surreal contemporization of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, this effects-heavy Bill Murray holiday vehicle from 1988 sees the former SNL funnyman assuming the role of television executive Frank Cross, the meanest and most depraved man on earth. Cross will stoop to unheard of levels to increase his network's ratings -- even if it means mounting outrageous programs to retain an audience, such as "Robert Goulet's Cajun Christmas" and Lee Majors in "The Night the Reindeer Died," with an AK-47-toting Santa. Cross plots his foulest move, however, for the Christmas holiday, when he will force his office staff to mount a live production of A Christmas Carol on national television -- and thus work through Christmas Eve. Cross's life is turned upside down with visits from three ghosts: a craggy-faced cabbie known as The Ghost of Christmas Past (David Johansen); the sugar-plum fairy Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane) (who gets her jollies by bonking Frank across the face with a toaster oven); and, eventually, the caped, headless Ghost of Christmas Future, who will send Frank sliding into a crematory oven -- just before he gives the sleazoid one last chance to redeem himself. Along the way, the spirits carry Frank to scenes from his past, present, and future (per Scrooge) and impart a glimpse of how he became so thoroughly rotten. The radiant Karen Allen co-stars as Frank's girlfriend, Claire Phillips, and the film packs in cameos from countless celebrities -- among them, Mary Lou Retton, John Houseman, Jamie Farr, and, in a truly grisly and tasteless bit, John Forsythe. Richard Donner directs, from a script credited to the late Michael O'Donoghue and Mitch Glazer.

I genuinely think David Johansen should have won and Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Ghost of Christmas Past. The dude isn't even a full time actor, he's a musician.. and here he is NAILING the performance of a wise-cracking old decrepit ghost from New York who seems to get a kick out of everything bizarre. Phenomenal performance!!

I think it's funny how usually the Ghost of Christmas Past is presented as an ethereal, androgynous or childlike figure, and in this movie they went for a cigar-smoking taxi driver. Then, the Ghost of Christmas Present is usually a big jovial guy but in this movie it's a fairy-like lady who likes to play it rough. :D

Yeah, I personally always wondered, was the taxi driver originally meant to be the ghost of christmas present. like first off christmas present is always depicted as a man in robes surrounded by food and such, here it's a man wearing a having coats and is surrounded by trash and food wrappers which weirdly match the idea. then later on during murray's big television broadcast he gives a ride to the love interest which would make more sense if he was the ghost of christmas present, because it was the present christmas

Yeah, parts of the movie do feel like something Tim Burton would do. Plus, Danny Elfman did the music. Any of the scenes involving the Ghost of Christmas Future definitely has that Tim Burton vibe.

Sam Kinison was going to play this role, but Bill Murray intervened because he was friends with David Johanson. At the time, David was going by the stage name "Buster Poindexter", performing as a cabaret singer. His biggest hit was a cover of "Hot, Hot, Hot," which charted around the time the movie was made. Bill Murray appeared in the music video.

I like how Frank’s shown on every North American poster holding a cigar and the cab driver smokes more than he does. I’ve seen this movie 3x and I can’t think of one scene where Bill Murray even holds a cigar let alone is seen smoking one. Which is ironic considering how much of a big shot the character is and the fact that it was the 1980s

I liked David Johansen in any role he gets. Pretty cool going from the lead singer of glam punk band THE NEW YORK DOLLS, to roles in great movies. Let's not forget his Buster Poindexter gimmick either. Very underrated entertainer!

This is the second movie with Bill Murray in it to feature a Checker Cab being recklessly driven by a ghost. The opening of this scene is similarly shot to the scene in Ghostbusters with the ghost cabby.

If it were Chicago, it's likely the cab would be green and white. It's a Checker; the other cab in the scene is an Impala.

Scrooge was Amazing. Can you please make a video of all the cab driver scenes. "You don't know who you are, you don't know what you want, and you don't know what heck is going on" 😁 His laugh friggin kills me. Smokey horse laugh with a cabby accent 🚕 Aaaaaaaaaah hahaha relax Frank! He loves his job. 🤔Maybe he worked for D.C. CAB(1983).
