I just finished watching all ten parts of Sculpey 101 and I cannot find enough good things to say about your endeavors. Your productions are fun, funny ( love the silly sound effects) and very helpful and informative. I am a 68-year old amateur wood carver/ sculptor and I have never seen a presentation - anywhere - that was so helpful. Thank you, thank you and thank you. I would like very much to contribute financially to your efforts and I just attempted to CONTRIBUTE FINANCIALLY through Patreon, but so far I have been unable to do so. Understand that I am old and not very tech savvy but I am here for ya, Josh, if you need me. I am just not sure how to go about it. Best to ya, Paulie

I am 73 and really appreciate your attitude about aging too. There is a lot of shaming about that these days. I am just coming into my own as an artist and believe that is because of my many years of experience.

Funny thing, I've been doing tons of hand and feet anatomy studies lately, so this fits in perfectly. I remember finding the eye sculpting video really helpful for learning to draw eyes, I'm sure I'll be able to absorb something from here too. :) Also, that wizard mount hand looks super impressive to me. Really fun idea too!

Man i gotta tell you, theese video's are great! I started sculpting a figure in 1/16 the other day, first time i ever did an entire figure from scratch. I know how to draw since before, so many people told med once i learn to sculpt then it will be easier than drawing in many ways. the body came out fine, but i had no idea how to make the head. I tried making the head today, failed and threw it away. Then i found your video's and because sculpting looks so easy when someone does it on video, i tried it again and the result wasn't that bad i think. I still have a lot to work on, but it wasn't a failure. So thank you very much for your video's, i took a huge step in just one day after watching the 3 first in this series, hopefully i will take more steps now.

Sculpting small parts that tend to snap or break such as hands with fingers can be done with epoxy putty. It dries as hard as granite. You can even sand it, grind it, and paint it.

Thank you for this, as always wonderful and incredibly helpful. Sculpey is SO brittle is is almost unfit for purpose for a lot of projects, I have started stifening areas with appoxy sculpt because it is very very strong and this helps save a lot of heartache

Great teacher, Can you sculpt a female in detail the same as in your other lessons, with no mistakes, lol. No really, do it to perfection, your work is great and I want to follow every thing you are teaching except re-doing the mistakes. I thought I was doing really well until you said their was not enough space above the lip and the nose, then shocked the hell out of me by cutting half the face away. Not good for a beginner, I nearly gave up, so now I watch the whole tutorial before I start to copy you, saves a lot of time. Keep up the good work, us beginners and more advanced need your knowledge, I have learnt more watching your tutorials than I have any other. Thanks again.
@JoshForeman

One of the hardest lessons for beginners is to approach the first several sculptures as 'just practice'. To be willing to slice and squish the parts that aren't working. Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it!

Great question. When I do teeth I basically make dentures and bake them, then embed them in the foil armature and sculpt over them. I'll consider it for a followup. Thanks!

@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 7 жыл бұрын
The best thing to start with is something you love and feel passionate about. Just set your expectations appropriately. The first time you do anything new it won't be fantastic. But the next time you try it'll be twice as good in half the time. And every time you try after that you'll get better and faster!

You give great lessons! I use to sculpt all the time and have been out of it about 10 years or so. I NEVER did heads of people that weren't abstract and you are a very good teacher, explaining every little move to make while doing it. I have watched so many people in KZfaq totally mess up a head and features, even during a KZfaq lesson, get frustrated and smash it..haha Your ear was amazing, it made the head almost pass as a very small person. I will keep watching and continue to learn from you. You have a neat personality that goes well with your lessons. Are your lessons specific to sculpy or can you do the same thing with water based Clay's as well? Would armatures be the same? Would they need to be professionally fired? Maybe you have lessons on that also? I don't want to walk by it and it shatter. Although that was a funny comment...don't want it to happen. That would make me mad and I would set it down and probably not do it again for another ten years. Thank you again for the opportunity to learn from you.
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 6 жыл бұрын
Despite the inherent fragility of Sculpey I do think it's the best medium for beginners. There's a lot more logistical issues with water based clay which is why I don't use them very often. But yes, most armatures are the same for any medium. (Except wax, but that's it's own can of worms.)

But wouldn't having old hands make it harder (especially if you develop arthritis) to perform such delicate tasks? I don't see that as desirable but to each their own

Have you tried other brands, once especially for sculpting? They are harder, especially, Kato.

Yeah, I've tried them all. I generally use Super Sculpy Firm just because the price/hardness ratio is right for me. I'm going to be doing a pretty extensive comparison in an upcoming series where I'll get into colors and other specialty polymers.

Most programs let you scale the image. If it's possible to duplicate the image you want, what I do is print 5 or 6 different sizes on each sheet, that way I'm almost sure to end up with what I need.
