Hi Josh. I just wanted to say thanks for this. My sculpture work has improved drastically and the best thing I learned, one of many, is watching you fearlessly chop and cut parts away even after doing a lot of work to it. It has been this that has made me improve so much.

Another excellent and very informative video! Josh, you have the ability to transmit knowledge effectively! I hope that you will do a series for an entire muscular figure! That would be great, and it will answer many questions for people new to this versatile medium (polymer clay)! Thank you so much! George Greece

thank you so much for all your videos. You are the most intuitive teacher - every question that generates in my mind while watching your lessons you end up answering. without fail! I am an oil painter, which is my job now, and I've always wanted to to work in 3d, but never have until this year. like this fall of this year. So, I have been spending a lot of time watching videos on KZfaq. I'm blown away by the amount of videos people make about their craft, meticulously talking the viewer through the process. Its extremely moving actually - the art world where I come from would never in 1000000000 years talk people through their process, and if they heard wind of another artist using any part of their process they will go on the take down - markets crash, careers end, sides are taken, cruel memes are generated, art is quickly flipped and money re-laundered elsewhere. I hate it, capitalism on steroids. I think its anti-art. I much prefer THIS world here, and artists like you, who send tutorials as far as the reaches of the internet will take them. Art that's liberated and meant for everyone is catering to none. So I'm going to spend the rest of my evening trying to master your method of voluminous locks of human hair as well as bear fur. THANK YOU

thanks so much for the kind words! I think my experience teaching live classes gave me a leg up on anticipating questions. I understand why people would feel a need to protect their craft if they think that's what let's them make a living at it. But I think the world progresses better and faster when education is free, and I'm privileged enough to be able to give it away for whatever pittance KZfaq ads and Patreon gives me, haha. Really glad you're getting something out of it!

Oh, and keep it up with the vocabulary lessons.....ie, searching for that perfect descriptive word. Don't even know what to start on, but I sure am excited about it. That and going to buy a few tools.. Keep talking. Keep teaching. You have 14 thousand Amen's ;-} P.S. Just watched; Josh, as Josh, being Josh. I knew it! You exude it!

Hi Josh , Well thank you first of all for your cool videos and instructions, love your sense of humor also : ), i had a question for you, did you make your guy there to reproduce and sell or is it just a one time deal and youll sell him just the one or ? I ask because i am doing a project making some small figurines and i will definitely be making many of them and selling , plus all the little accessories for them as well so i was just curious what your plans for this guy is or was : ) thanks and keep up the really cool videos as well...

Hi there. I tried to make a go at sculpting/molding/casting to sell about a decade ago and never found a way to achieve all my goals that would make it worth the trouble. (I've already got my dream career so I'm not in a position where I'd need to do that to feel creatively satisfied.) My criteria were: 1. Create unique sculptures at a detail and quality level I'm proud of. 2. After material costs pay myself $50/hour. I never got super detailed with a breakdown, but I'm positive I never got even close to $5/hour. There's just no way to compete with Chinese factories. Having said that, there are obviously many sculptors out there who figured out how to make a good living at it. So don't let me discourage you. In regards to the piece in this video; no I'm not planning on reproducing or selling it. The amount I could get for it wouldn't be worth losing it to me. Thanks for the comment and for watching. Good luck with your project. Post a link whenever you get a chance!

Ok Josh well here is my very first video and it is just a test video so bare that in mind : ), I am just learning GoPro studio and editing my videos but here you can see in the background a 6 foot long 4 foot high 3d Anime girl on a beach first made with eps foam 2 layers of 1.5 inch foam then plastilina clay face which will be molded and cast out of plaster of Paris when i'm happy with it , it will all be coated in resin and painted ,airbrushed and clear coated then on it's way to Ebay and hopefully find her way into someones house and life. see what you think, good or bad i would love to hear what you think : ). thanks ! @@JoshForeman Ah, sorry. I meant the yellow with fur. I'm guessing here that you sculpted the design on a piece of clay. Baked it. Then pressed unbaked clay on the baked piece and baked them together. Then took them apart? 😃

@@BeanLady The yellow stuff is Amazing Mold Putty. You do not bake that. It just takes about 20 minutes after you mix it to set up.

How realistic is it to try and approach these techniques as a beginner? These lessons are super amazing but I feel like I'll mess it up if I try a bust sculpture. Also, do you let the clay dry before working on the next parts of the face? If not, how do you keep the clay from drying out while you're not working with it? Thank you so much for these videos!!!
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 5 жыл бұрын
I'm using polymer clay which is oil based so it does not dry out for years. You bake it in the oven when you're ready to harden it.

what would the approach be for long hair for a female if the hair is partially not attached. do i do the same approach as with the fur then attach it separately to the head/
@JoshForeman
@JoshForeman 6 жыл бұрын
Longer hair requires a different approach. You should sculpt the big forms on the head all together. Here's a pretty good tutorial for what you want to do. They use nail polish remover to smooth the hair, but you can also use rubbing alcohol instead. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n5d1n9eblcyamJc.html

Had to watch this as I think it's relevant to creating thatched roof textures -- anything to avoid using faux fur. I was a: impressed you were working in a below freezing studio (and I thought my studio was cold...) b: wondering if hitting the clay with a heat gun every so often would help keeping it warm - risk of over warming being a problem as well as warming the clay below the working layer c: thinking that a detail wire brush would be helpful instead of a paint brush? They sell them to scarify wood and distress paint on model buildings and the like. Here is one from MicroMark though they are not my preferred vendor. You can find similar brushes elsewhere. www.micromark.com/distresser-weathering-brush,8057.html Adjusting the brush bristle length can give varying firmness and bristle spread. Starting at the bottom and working your way up. Wish I thought that when I did the Orc Boss Hut roof skins. I think I could have done it much faster with individual pieces laid over it from bottom to top. Ahh, learning... Never though of using softer sculpey for some textures. Noted. A great medium for the texture stamping. Love the font for your text inserts. :) It's the small details that add a lot.
