This is a sculpting video showing yet another method for sculpting a female head. It is more character-oriented than realistic and does not use reference photos. There is instruction throughout and other than a few places where I fast forward it is in real-time. I included additional instruction in this video. The face is the face that I used on the Mother earth dryad tree, but I had actually sculpted it a long time before I made the tree. It may have been as long as a year before. I hope you find the instruction helpful. I personally enjoy watching people create so I hope you do enjoy it.

Hello Linda! My name is Mia and I’m writing to say that I learn so much from your video tutorials! I appreciate that you take the time to explain each step and why you are doing what you’re doing. I have a few questions, if you don’t mind. How do you know what scale your sculpt is? What size are the glass beads to use? When you talked about using a skull for sculpting, what did you mean? Where are sculpting skulls found? Can they go in the oven? I also have a suggestion for easier seeing. My husband got me a magnifier with a light on it- it’s mounted on an arm that you can swing out of your way when you need to. I use it when I’m painting or making minis. It comes in different magnifications. I think up to 10 Xs. the original- which might help for filming. Also, perhaps you could put a tape line on you white mat so you’ll know if you’re still in the screen… everything you do is so valuable- I found myself turning my iPad to try to see off screen when you glided away! Again, these are just suggestions, please don’t take offense- I know you are creating these tutorials on your own, so I was just trying to think of ways to make it easier for you. Have a great day! Thanks so much for the great tutorial! Sincerely, Mia

Thank you for your comments and your suggestions. How do you know what scale your sculpt is? * Most artists who worry about a specific scale work in either 1:6(Barbie) or 1:12(doll house) But if you are not making a doll for a specific scene or display like a doll house, scale is relative. This site has a pretty good explanation. www.requiemart.com/blogs/news/materials-monday-scale-in-dolls-and-doll-clothing What size are the glass beads to use? * The size of the eye depends on the width of the head and the look you are going for. I thought i explained that in the video. The eye itself should be 1/5 of the overall width of the head. You can use larger eyes if you not looking for a realistic scale, the way a fairy might have large eyes. When you talked about using a skull for sculpting, what did you mean? Where are sculpting skulls found? Can they go in the oven? * There are many artists who use a resin or polymer clay skull when sculpting as it helps to establish bone structure and also makes it easier to set the eyes where they need to go. I am used to sculpting from scratch and only use the ball to reduce the volume of clay thickness and help make sure the clay bakes properly. * There are a number of vendors on Etsy who make them using resin and sell them. But you can sculpt your own and make an easy press mold of it to use in the future if you like the idea of a skull. * it depends, polymer clay skulls bake fine even if you series back, but the resin ones can cause cracks if you series bake. I think that was all the questions. Again thanks for commenting.
