In real life Josh became an International Master as an adult rather than a Grandmaster. He never reached the rank that his teacher held. He currently is an author and teaches BJJ. Chess is a strange world.

_"Look deep, Josh, it's there. It's twelve moves away but it's there. You've got him. Take his pawn with your pawn. G takes f6, forking his bishop and rook. Don't take back with your bishop, you'll need that to guard e7. He'll take back, either with his bishop or his night. When he does - this is the hard part - sacrifice your rook: capture him on f6 and get him to check. King has to take your rook, he takes f6. Give him the knight to check e7, forking his king and his rook. He'll move to safety; King f5. Take his rook with your knight. He'll take back with his king and you've got him. Don't move until you see it....Don't move until you see it....Don't move until you see it.... "_

I'm not really aware, Awnner, that Bobby Fischer shows up, at all, in this film, except in documentary footage. The movie's more about his inspiration to Josh than it is a portrait of Bobby. Though it does tell Bobby's story through Josh's eyes. It is likely a fairly romantic telling of Josh's story, though, I do agree.

@FFassassin71 He offered him a draw once. It was refused. Josh did precisely what he should have done - followed through for the win. It wasn;t Josh's job to offer mercy a second time. Also - he could have promoted his pawn to a bishop instead of a queen and drawn the game. But that would be unsportsmanlike in the extreme.

Yes. Frm the position after Nxe5 here's probably the best possibility: 1.h5 Nf7 2.Kg6 Ne5+ (or Nh8+) 3.Kf5 a5 4.h6 Nf7 (4...a4 5.Kg6 Nh8+ =) 5.h7 Nh8 6.Kf6 a4 7.Kg7 a3 (a knight move loses instantly) and both sides will be dead even. If you play it out, it works. QED, good sir.

@sdegroot1 they drew the first game, the rematch Josh won. Some chess experts have analyzed this game played for the movie, written by the actual Josh and his teacher, and found that there actually WAS a way Jonathon could have won if he had moved a different piece earlier on.

People seem to think you can't admire someones skill and brilliance in one area if you don't respect them in another. Bobby Fisher clearly had a lot of problems and wasn't a saint by any means. However he was the most brilliant mind in the history of chess.

Because that is not how it is done. One is expected to consider the offer and to work out on ones own whether to accept or not. It was not up to Josh to prove that he would win. It was up to Jonathan to figure THAT out for himself. Josh gave him that chance - and Jonathan let ego and overconfidence make his decision for him - instead of acknowledging Josh's possible superior chess skills and searching the position himself.

@CanadaMMA Hardly. He stoppes playing after he became World Champion. Real great players like Lasker, Aljechin, Botwinnik, Karpov or Kasparov did not hide in fear after winning the title. He lost any claim to be a great player when he chose not to be a player. All the above mentioned outclassed him and many others like Spassky, Smyslow, Euwe, Capablance or Petrosjan matched him by winning the title. If only Tal were in good health, Fischer would not have even become WC.

No but at that point he has zero chance of winning. You can checkmate with a queen and a king so it’s just a matter of time before he loses.
@PeterFormaini
@PeterFormaini 14 жыл бұрын
Um.....no. If POE had NOT captured the knight, Josh could have then moved the knight and exchanged it for POE's lone remaining pawn - then queened his OWN pawn and won the game easily. POE HAD to take the knight after the check and loss of his rook - to NOT take it would have mean a certain loss - Josh using the knight to stop POEs final pawn.

Are you referring to my post Arsinc? That's not the point of it. They should have place Black's King on the back rank so white had some chance to win at the end. A simple oversight but neither of the kids should be sad at 1rst and 2nd place.

Also Black should have had his King on e1, d1, or f1 so there's some chance the white queen could skewer black's king and queen but in the movie here it was white who got skewered. But how significant our these details?

this didn't even happen. In the real game there was no taking of each other's queen. There was a sacrifice of queen's and in the end Josh sets up a promotion skewer. Which didn't happen. In the real game they drawed which was all josh needed to win the championship. Also if josh wanted to draw he should've promoted to a bishop which is draw by insufficient material LOL.
