hi i worked for 22 hours straight to get this video out in time and then it was taken down completely with a (false) copyright claim. i spent all day today encoding and uploading just to get a working version, and even now i'm not sure this will stay up. so if you see anyone being all like "OH FINALLY JEEZ WHAT TOOK SO LONG" please laugh at them. if you want to stay more closely informed on this kind of thing, you could follow me on twitter (@NotGlidus) or join the discord server ( discord.gg/glidus ) or sit in the bushes outside my house (don't) i probably don't need to say how heavily this kind of thing impacts the long-term performance of a video (reuploads tend to have sad, pathetic lives) so RIP this one. (edit: this video is doing so well?? weird.) thanks for watching, and thanks much to my patrons. the cumulative safety net they pledge means that this sort of thing doesn't ruin me. the channel has been growing at an unprecedented rate which is pretty neat you could say. let's just cross our fingers (or toes if that's more your thing) and hope that HBO is done trying to destroy videos that... praise their work. good going heebo.

Daemon nearly beating the messenger to death because he didn’t want Viserys’ help in taking the Stepstones and felt he’d be robbed of the honour of doing it himself is the most “little brother” thing that has ever been put on screen. 🤣 And more than that, the characterisation of him in that sequence was fantastic as it was all done without a single word; you get that he is ruthless, passionate, bold, reckless, bloodthirsty and above all determined to prove himself just from his actions alone. It’s brilliant character writing, even if he did go into that battle wearing his strongest plot armour lol, but I’m willing to let that slide.

True, they should've had a significant portion of Crabfeeder's army destroyed instead of all of it, and added 1 more fight scene with a full-on assault inside the caves. Okay, my defense of the "before the Targaryens took over" line regarding the hart is that he isn't saying that the deer itself was necessarily significant to the ruling faction, but stating that these days it's the Dragon that's the premier symbol of royalty, emphasizing the massive impact that the arrival of dragons and those who bonded with them left a deeply engrained mark on Westeros to the point where centuries of tradition are so easily forgotten (also to appease the Targs and make them feel special). So yeah, sorry about rambling, but I actually quite like that line and the implications that it has, at least in my interpretation!
@poenpotzu2865

Also this implies the hart of the Baratheon is an icon that may come from the First Men, sort of like how the Andals appropriated first men symbols, which later Targaryens would change the royal icons

My favourite part of the episode had to be the contrast between how Viserys and Rhaenyra dealt with the stags, which are established as symbolic of royalty and the throne. Viserys has his stag captured by others and dragged to him, he barely has any control over the situation and simply has to act how he is bade because that’s how he feels as king. He feared Balerion because dragons symbolise power and, at his core, Viserys is a man afraid of power thrust into a position he was not ready for. And even at the one task he was meant to do, he screws it up and needs two thrusts to kill the stag. It wasn’t quite as miserable a performance as Theon’s butchery of Rodrick Cassel’s death in S2 of GOT, but you can clearly see that he does not feel comfortable with the role he’s been thrust into by his society. This is emphasised even more by the fact that everyone around him claps for him, as if to reassure him that he did the right thing when everyone knows that it was wrong to watch, much like Viserys’ reign. And even then, the colour of the stag is important as Viserys was promised a white stag much like a young Viserys was promised a great reign like his grandfather Jaehaerys, but the reality was much more disappointing. The stag was not weak, but it was not exceptional either. Rhaenyra, by contrast, is the one who witnessed the white stag, the symbol of royalty, and what’s more important is that she saw it alone, only she and Criston know that it was there because that’s so informative of her character. Despite no one believing in her, as they wouldn’t believe her if she claimed she saw the stag, she doesn’t need them to know. The portent of this symbol was meant for her and her alone, as it was to reassure her that she has the future and it doesn’t matter if everyone knows it or not. Likewise, the fact that she chose to let the stag go is so important because she rejected the role that her society would have imposed upon her, she chose a different path and chose a different way than what had been imposed on Viserys with everyone watching him. This message was laid with so much important symbolism that we will come back to look on in hindsight with a much different light.

Not to be an absolute wanker but it’s so nice to hear a KZfaqr I have enjoyed for so long, mention the problems around not having the right genitals and not care if their followers complain about them saying so. Makes me enjoy the channel even more, thanks for being a deece bloke.

28:20 actually the archers only need to aim in his general direction, because they are a lot of archers. If you think back to the napoleonic wars, the infantry didn't actually aim at their targets, rather they aimed in their direction and because they were a literal wall of guns some bullets were bound to hit. Same principle applies here. The archers don't have to aim individually, bacause they have a numerical advantage (a higher probability to hit).

Works a lot better if you're fighting an army and not just one guy though. Statistically you have a very high chance of someone hitting him, but unless you're written by Benioff and Weiss and therefore only run in a singular straight line, there's a good chance of survival, especially if you have cover.
@old_fritz
@old_fritz Жыл бұрын
@@TemariNaraannaschatz I guess I can somewhat see that being the case. It is silly though, that they hit the armour rather than his EXPOSED head. Edit: they could have at least given him a sick face scar or something (would have adressed the problem without killing him) or i dunno, have him wear a helmet (although then he couldn't have sold his surrender properly)
@TemariNaraannaschatz
@TemariNaraannaschatz Жыл бұрын
@@old_fritz If you look at it from a physical standpoint it's pretty easy on why the armor get's hit: 1) much bigger place and therefore easier to hit 2) if you're moving forward and archer will have to anticipate where you're going to end up when the arrow hits you, so if you're just a bit faster than that, the arrow will land lower of miss you. I think this is one of the few scenes where I was alright with a character not wearing a helmet on the battlefield. Because he surrendered. But I think giving him a face scar would have been long term impractical (applying that every shooting day would be a hassle), so they just gave him a haircut.

They mentioned having dragons in the plural during the war council, that was enough of a signal for me. Also, I'm just going to say it -- I would have preferred to have seen a few arrows deflect or even bounce off of Daemons *plate* armor (and maybe a helmet. I know, actors' faces; that's why this is a parenthatical.)

“You alright?” “Yes, yes of course. What shouldn’t be right?” He stuttered. “You didn’t answer.” “Why are you here?” Daeron asked in return. “Aegon, Helaena and I plan to go riding early tomorrow morn. Are you game?” Despite all of their differences, flying was the one thing that was beloved by all the four siblings. So Daeron agreed obviously, at least on Tessarion’s back he could measure himself with his brothers and even occasionally win. “What are you reading?” Aemond sat next to him and took the book out of his hand. “Mayhaps you would do better as a maester than a knight. The Citadel would surely welcome another Vaegon Targaryen.” Daeron shrugged, “I don’t have the patience. And neither the willpower for celibacy.” That made his brother laugh, he threw his head back and had his mouth wide open to clear the view of his many white teeth. He smiled little and laughed less and most of it was loaded with ridicule and mockery. Yet this time he was truly joyful. “Have you ever laid with a woman before? Mayhaps I shall take you to a brothel with me.” “I respectfully decline, brother.” Daeron avoided looking into his eye. “I have no taste for whores.” “You cannot judge what you have never touched. I know of establishments that cater for every need. Perhaps you would enjoy a whore without teats but with other parts instead?” His voice was devout of any mockery and his pitch rose at the end of his sentence. It made Daeron’s heart beat incredibly fast. His face shot up and he met his brother's gaze, there was something reassuring in it. “Do you think I didn’t know?” Aemond asked carefully. “You always have your eyes on the pretty knights and never seemed to care whenever father or grandfather wanted to introduce you to a lady maid. Also, the squires talk. They do it often and quite derogatory, but they are also right most of the time.” Daeron did not know what to say, he was terribly ashamed but paralyzed also. Unable to move and to escape his brother's gaze, he kept looking into his burning eyes of amethyst and sapphire. “So is it the truth?” Aemond asked. “You hate me, don’t you? Your weakling brother who would rather swallow a sword than wield it.” Daeron laughed cruelly. “Why should I hate you? You are my brother and I love you above anything else. People tell us to be abnormal simply for wedding brother to sister, but we are valyrians and we shall do what we think proper.” Aemond put his hand on Daeron’s shoulder and it grounded the young prince a bit.

You can really extend this whole "second son" thing to ASOIAF. In general, "second" sons play a bigger role than first. Ned was a second son. Jon is Rhaegar's second son and believed to be Ned's second biological son, albeit illegitimate Bran is Ned's actual second biological son, and is his second legitimate son Stannis is a second son Tyrion is a second son - Jaime actually has a big role, but Tyrion was a POV character first Sansa is Ned's second biological child, and if the show has any merit will end up as his actual heir. Meanwhile, the first sons: Brandon Stark - killed before the first book Robb Stark - never a POV character, killed in the second book Robert Baratheon - killed in first book.

Just like making him subservient to his older brother, Otto suggesting that Rhaenyra marries little Aegon is such a great addition. It shows that while he's certainly ambitious and callous, he's no Littlefinger or Tywin. He doesn't want the Realm to burn just so he can get what he wants. He knows that having Rhaenyra marry little Aegon would solve so many future problems.
