Indie's where the interesting stuff happens... you won't get billion-poly character models with godawful facial animation and phoned-in voice acting, most of the time, true... you might not even get a battle pass to waste your time and money at the same time. But you tend to get some amount of fun, and every so often you stumble upon an amazing gaming experience. Something inspiring, moving, or just very comforting. Not so much from the cubicle slave pits called the "mainstream game industry"...

I bought the game while it was still in early acess and once it supposedly came out I spent an entire evening marveling at how utterly weird and seemingly unfinished it obviously is. The last drop for me was that multi-headed blue ghost in that library I am not sure my shots did anything to... And then I ran out of ammo and realized I had no idea of what I was doing in there anyway.

Guilty of being Nester Nostalgia Blinders here, 'A Door Has Opened on [Hub World Name]'. That was the text Hexen used to tell you to go back to the Hub World and check, indicating you were done on the side area you were in for now. And Hexen did have map screens. You could actually move around and shoot while you had it up even if you couldn't see the monsters. Sounds like they put a lot of effort into carving off all the good parts of Hexen and serving up what was left. - Favorite sewer level: Toxic Seahorse in Mega Man X3, a series that avoids the usual issues by increasing mobility in water, and X3 even provides a ride armor designed for use in it.

I always thought it'd be fun to have a sewer level that literally lasts for three seconds. Like, some NPC is, "quick! he went into the sewer!" and you're like "oh god sewer level" and you go into the sewer and round a corner and there's the exit.
@DanVzare5 ай бұрын
I've personally always thought that it would be awesome if the final level of a game was a frozen underwater sewer level, with both underwater sections and ice physics in a sewer setting. With the joke being that the final boss knows that those three things are each considered the worst ever levels. So by putting them altogether, perhaps he can win the hero (aka you), by making you give up in frustration.

There's a tendency to imagine and remember Hexen and Heretic (and Doom for that matter) as being very... brown. But take a look at a few screenshots of those games, and see just how much high saturation primary colour there actually is - it's way more than one would expect, especially compared to the murky brownfests of the mid 2000s. My theory is that, compared to the eye-bleeding 16 colour EGA games that were around just a little bit earlier, anything would look brown and monotone.

Or, my favorite, the Flame Mask (or whatever it was called): Which, when picked up, goes in your inventory with your usable items, because it is a usable item. Except it can only be used at a specific spot to open a piece of wall, because it's really just a funny-shaped key that fits a camouflaged door and might as well have been replaced with a switch and the infamous "door somewhere" message, because that would have been a LESS obtuse design choice.

I know exactly what happened with the mana refills. The devs saw playtesters ignore spells. To fix this, they didn't buff spells, make them more interesting, or any normal solution. They figured the players were being stingy with their mana reserves and dumped way more on them to encourage its use, after which playtesters probably started using the spells if only to feel better about not leaving extra pickups behind when they found more mana in the next six seconds.

That observation on nostalgia really hits close to home, as a self-avowed sperg who loves turn-based RPGs. A genre so massively neglected, especially by AAA, and most indie devs are only trying to ape a few particular schools of turn-based combat rather than explore the genre and do something new (even if not entirely original). And the schools of turn-based RPGs that I often see mostly covered are: the Mario RPG class of button prompts, the Chrono Trigger style of pseudo-active combat, the FF6 case of "kinda turn-based but enemies will still have their move if you're undecided".

The Active Time Battle system you're describing is definitely my preferred. In all the Final Fantasy games before 4 I did not enjoy having to pre-select my actions for the turn, not knowing if it was ok to have my healer use an attack because everyone is full health, or if I should've psychically guessed the boss was going to punch my teeth in and I should've pre-emptively healed one specific party member before I could've ever known they would be hit. Because now that I didn't psychic-guess healed them, when I try and heal them on the next turn, the boss wins the coin-flip that decides turn order, punching the same person's teeth further into their skull, this time killing them. And then my healer attempts to heal their lifeless corpse, totally wasting their turn.

The Trails/Kiseki games (officially in English: the Trails in the Sky trilogy, the Crossbell duology, the Trails of Cold Steel tetralogy, and Trails into Reverie) use a variant of Grandia combat. I got some good sewer levels that are actually fun for once not counting Conker’s great example: Residue Processing in Half Life, especially the Black Mesa version Pit Worm’s Nest in Half Life Opposing Force. Imagine Conker’s one without the comedy nor opera singing Lud’s Gate in Tomb Raider 3 Louvre Storm Drains in Tomb Raider 6 The Cistern & Tomb of Tihocan in Tomb Raider 1, especially the TRAE (cancelled Core Design remake) versions, Alpha build or not Route Kanal in Half Life 2. Dark Interval & Raising the Bar Redux’s counterparts aren’t bad either Jacknife in Mirror’s Edge The Sewers in Dying Light 1, like a cross between the two aforementioned ME & HL2 ones Every level with sewage in it (not strict a sewer level) in Marathon 2: Durandal & Marathon Infinity Defend THIS, Couch Fishing & No Artificial Colors in Marathon Redux Streptococcal Pfhorignutus (or however the fuck you spell it) in Marathon Eternal 1 or 2 sewers in the Dungeon course & the Singapore Market Course sewer in an old Minecraft adventure map called T3C Parkour. Bonus points for entering those areas requires flushing yourself down a toilet and swimming out of another one, with the market sewer being required to finish the “level”. Area 51 in Duke Nukem Forever 2011’s DLC, The Doctor Who Cloned Me. Similar to the Singapore Market in Minecraft complete with coming out of a john in a row of cubicles except the sewage is a realistic pipe as opposed to an Aberdeen/Edinburgh/London/New York/Tokyo style underground poo canal. There’s even floating turds and used tampons someone flushed away. The water treatment plant in Ion Maiden (forgot its name. No, it’s not Power Up as the one I mean comes after the Sonic Adventure 2 Inclinator section & abandoned hospital) The Watercourse & Sewers levels in Puddle, an obscure liquid physics puzzle game

Favorite sewer level is the sewers from the original Rage. Sure, back in the day you had buy them as DLC but they were still the most enjoyable video game sewers I've ever experienced. And they were optional. You could just not go down there. Or not buy them in the first place.

Speaking of classic 90s games, when are we finally getting a retro review of Duke Nukem 3D?!!!

After seeing positive reviews/vids being sponsored by this game, I kept thinking "I hope Yahtzee reviews this so I can get a proper analysis of it"
