Secret Base

Жыл бұрын

It’s July 6th, 2019. We’re at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC 239. Welterweights Jorge Masvidal and Ben Askren are about to face off and we are about to witness history. But to understand the history of this moment, the long roads these guys took to get here, the hatred that’s built between them, and the possibility of this actually unraveling into full-on beef - we need to rewind.

Ben Askren is one of the biggest what-if's in MMA history. He's a result of what happens when you put all of your stats into one category. His nickname is "Funky" because he has such an unorthodox style of wrestling and grappling that a lot of people found challenging to combat. At the time, he was considered one of the greatest MMA fighters in the world. Just goes to show you that the UFC is a whole different beast. I've always been a fan of both Askren and Jorge, but I really wish Ben Askren did at least a little bit better in the UFC as I would have loved to see him fight more. The Jake Paul fight didn't help his legacy either but I'm pretty sure that was a cash grab. I just hope that people don't write Askren off as only a meme because he was truly an anomaly.

I love that this video highlights Ben Askren’s accomplishments in competitive wrestling and fighting before he became a meme. Masvidal may have ended his career with a record-setting knockout, but SB puts adequate respect on Ben Askren’s name by talking about his excellence in collegiate and Olympic wrestling, as well as in other competitive fighting leagues. Anthony Smith put it best: “the dude was a college wrestler and an Olympic wrestler. He has multiple world titles in multiple different organizations. All these fighters [that are here today], if Ben were to walk in here right now, each and every one of those guys would get out of his way and let him walk through.”

His fight vs. Luis Santos which ended in a DQ is a fine example of absolutely ATROCIOUS fighting IQ. Go watch it. It's so so bad. Ben was a fine wrestler. And that got him far in MMA. Not a really a UFC fan, but I found this very interesting. Am I right in assuming that if Masvidal misses this then the fight is probably over very quickly but with the opposite result? Also is it assumed that Masvidal intentionally tried to make Askren think this would be a long fight so he wouldn't see a move like this coming to start?
@Max-lm2jc
@Max-lm2jc Жыл бұрын
Askren is a wrestler who sucks at everything else, and Masvidal is the opposite of that - a striker who sucks on the ground. There was a high probability that Askren would be "shooting for the balls" from the very first minute, so Masvidal took a guess and gave the knee a try. He guessed right and was accurate. If this didn't work out, the fight could've went in Askren's favor if he did manage to take Masvidal to the ground and choke him out.

Ben Askren was shooting for a takedown, Jorge Masvidal expected him to open the fight with that so had planned on countering with the jump knee. There’s footage of him in the locker room before the fight with his coaches practicing the knee over and over. If he either missed Askren, or didn’t go for it at all he would have been taken down by Askren in the opening seconds of the fight. Against a wrestler the caliber of Ben Askren that is a nightmare, Ben could have had a chance to control Jorge and finish him with ground and pound, or just completely dominate him for the entire 1st round to the point of exhaustion. At which point takedowns in the 2nd and potentially 3rd round only get easier. It’s commonly agreed upon by a lot of MMA fans, if Askren lands the takedown to open that fight, he wins. That knee made Jorge’s career and essentially ended Ben’s.

Masvidal by no means guarantee loses if he doesn't go for this but going for it and missing would be an abject catastrophe. What made it effective is most fighters won't go for a flying knee period unless it's the end of a round. For fighters that are trying to win the referees score cards it's inherently risky to go for a flashy move that is usually somewhat telegraphed in a league where everyone has at least a tiny amount of wrestling or jiujitsu skill. And if you get takendown not only is that a stat in your opponents column but it's massive amounts of time off the clock where you're accomplishing nothing. The beauty in this opening is Masvidal isn't a normal UFC fighter. He doesn't care about the judges score cards because he's decided to do whatever it takes to prevent the fight from reaching the table. Askren probably goes for the shoot no matter what but Masvidal deliberately ran into the center of the octagon leaving Ben with little time to assess the situation and making it look like the takedown would be ridiculously easy since he doesn't have his feet set. Never in 100 years does Ben expect him to jump. The talk about torturing him doesn't even factor into his assessment, this move was never on the table In Ben's mind because it's suicidal against any good UFC fighter. By going for it Jorge straight up disrespected him as a fighter. Masvidal himself probably wasn't expecting the KO... he likely expected a knockdown and that he'd get some ground and pound in and be able to force Ben to work from his back for half the round to take the strength out of him and make him more conservative in his takedown attempts. When Jorge went for it Ben lowered his head before the feet leave the mat. once he's airborne Askren's only hope is to catch the knee and twist him into a throw... instead he eats it.

This one was legendary because not only was it a bizarre moment between two relatively unlikable fighters, but Ben was all hype and gas to the media (and had to be) because he was coming from ONE. This moment infected Masvidal with that same sense of overconfidence that Askren had, because Jorge's "three piece and a soda" is now three L's and a doctor's stoppage against a Twilight Diaz.

I don't follow UFC, or any MMA league for that matter, closely; but, I have always appreciated boxing/combat and, even more, love a good story. This video is really, really well done. Giving a novice fan, like me, an understanding of the origin of both fighters, and the narrative behind why there was any "beef" at all. On a channel FULL of good content, and excellent writing, this may be one of my favorite video's y'all have uploaded. Great job, Team Secret Base!
