Secular History
You guys know what a struggle this is. I do see us progressing to some of the more involved secular history curriculums as my girls age. I have done so much research. As usual, I need your feedback if you have any experience and can help me out! Have you used any of these? What are your thought? I really am feeling pretty confident in my choices. I am very excited about the Studies Weekly for Texas History. I have linked below everything that I have talked about in the video. Please share if you have experience with any of these. Please share if I am missing something I need to know about. Thanks to your wealth of knowledge for getting me this far!

I can't believe that I managed to get this video up this week. I talk about the impending bad weather at the end of this video. I had no idea we would be facing what has hit Texas this week. No power, no water, no internet, some cell service, and ALL.THE.COLD! In other news, I made chili and oatmeal in a castiron on my fireplace and feel like that was a history lesson in itself.

I really like what you say about not being able to just cut out religion, but at the same time it has to be presented in an honest narrative. For example you can't discuss the Middle Ages without understanding the role of the Church. That is exactly how I approach teaching not just history of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but all the non religious topics I cover on my channel.

We are using Blossom and Root River of Voices and Oh Freedom from Woke Homeschooling for history this year. They are US history only and for upper elementary and middle school. B&R has 3 pathways within the curriculum so you can choose a level that works for your learners. Oh Freedom has a lot of reading, but I think it is more comprehensive than B&R so far (1 month in).

Would like to start off by saying, that I really enjoy your videos. My favorite is the one that you listed the 13 things you don’t do in your homeschool. I was laughing throughout it, love your personality! Thank you for your honest, open and practical approach to homeschooling. My kiddos will be in the 4th and 7th grade next year. For the last couple of years we have used Curiosity Chronicles. My eldest has enjoyed the curriculum, however, my younger one not so much. I selected CC because the author stressed that it is a secular, non-Eurocentric view of world history. Next year, we will also be switching things up for history. In California, 4th graders focus on state history, similarly to Texas. So we will move away from CC to cover CA history for my 4th grader. Instead of continuing on with CC for my older child, I may try Oh Freedom! for my 7th grader. This way both of my kids are focused on US History. My question to you is, when your eldest is in 5th grade, is this when you plan on using History Quest (or whichever other curriculum you select)? And if so, do you plan on starting at Ancient History? Side note, I reached out to the publishers of History Quest, and they said that their next book in the series will be History Quest American (release early 2022), and then finish up with the series with their 4th and final book (History Quest Middle Times).

My plan for this coming year is to do 2 histories together as a family. Texas, to keep on track for my 4th and HQ early times for my kinder. My big kid started SOTW with volume 2 so we missed the earliest history in our studies. Next year, for 5th may be American history alongside something for my then 1st🤷‍♀️ planning to see how this next year goes.

Hi @@kamehaz, We tried California Out of the Box by Carrier Sheel Curriculum. It is an "Interdisciplinary History Curriculum", so it not only covers history, but literature, science and art. I loved the idea of it, but it was difficult for me to get into the hang of it, so we stopped using it. We transitioned to using Studies Weekly Grade 4 and children's books about CA. We will finish up the CA HIstory Studies Weekly in 5th grade and move into US History. For US History, I'm planning on using Studies Weekly Grade 5 as the base, and literature from Oh Freedom.

With History Quest uses the Usbourne encyclopedia of world history as its spine, it's only around AU$20 and has heaps of internet links - the other books are optional - you can use them or not - or pick your own. They are for the huggia weeks where you just snuggle up and read good books, eat good food and leave the paperwork alone while you emerce into that particular topic.

I stumbled upon My World Social Studies by Pearson and it comes in different levels. I’m loving it!!! We read the whole book together as a family and I write questions that I feel we need to review related to the chapters on 4x6 heavy weight index cards with the question on the front and answers on the back. I take them out in our free time so we can play our own version of jeopardy. My 2 kids are loving it and look forward to it! It has made learning history actually fun… unlike how boring it was when I was in school. I can’t believe how much we all have learned together and are able to retain. We do a lot of word association to help with retention. Hope you all find what works for you!

We are on our 3rd year of Curiosity Chronicles, and I wouldn’t call it unpolished, but it does have a dialogue following two cartoon kids, and that can turn people off. For my son (8 yo), he has loved it. We have always read it together, each taking a role, and that has kept him really engaged. The quality of the history is really well done, very well rounded, but it is a very small publisher. Torchlight uses Curiosity Chronicles, it isn’t a history curriculum on its own.

We are in the same boat with the weather over in San Antonio. It’s been quite a week. For History, we use the Curiosity Chronicles. My son is 8 and he seems to like it. I put on the audio book and he reads along. He does a page in the activity book and the map page. The only extra we usually do is the Minecraft activity. The recording (for Ancient History) is not the best quality. For us, that wasn’t an issue. Ancient History is meant for lower elementary (1-4) so it doesn’t include a lot of information, just snippets. I still feel like my son is learning enough from it. I just realized that we are doing more modern history as learn about different people. We learned about Walt Disney last year and are leaning about the Civil Rights Movement right now through books (MLK Jr., March on Washington, Hidden Fugures).

History quest requires the usborne book Encyclopedia of the world. The rest are just added options. It is fabulous and honestly the photos are wonderful. It is only a few pages per week with very little reading. It it mostly for the illustrations. I love it because it starts with history before people or animals or even plants. We read about. We read from the Usborn book on Monday and the kids have fun just looking through it at some point. Then Tuesday we read aloud. Then Wednesday we read about the history hop which is pretending the kids woke up in that time and place and describing what they see and feel. Then on Thursday and Friday we might do one of the extra books or a recipe or the art project or weeks like this one where my husband is stuck in Bay City with you guys...we skipped it. It’s just extra. I’ve heard good things about the audio version though and it includes the history hop in audio.

We're secular non-Christian homeschoolers. Story of the World...I want to love it, because it's exactly our kind of homeschool resource, BUT the depiction of us (our cultural/religious group) is so...weird? I realize I'm biased, obviously, but I legit don't know where she got her information from? Like I'm not even saying she's presenting us negatively or positively or anything. Like her description of our history is weird. She has some bare bones that seem in keeping with everything I know about our history and then the fleshed out bits, they just go so wrong, in strange ways. Like, hold up, stop the record, wrong. And you're left thinking, what was the point of that totally bizarre and completely inaccurate detail she just dropped. I cringe thinking about what thousands of homeschoolers have been taught about us over the years from this one resource. So the thing is, if I don't trust her sources for her history of MY people, how can I possibly trust anything she says about anyone?

Wonderful video, thank you! I don’t think this is contradictory to your comments in any way, just tossing my 2 cents in- you stressed that history can’t be taught without covering the religion motivators and consequences. I was genuinely surprised at the implication that there would be parents who want to do that? That seems so crazy to me! We not only can’t but we shouldn’t want to do that, it seems to me, right? That would literally be rewriting history, rather than seeking to understand. My personal view of secular history is being unafraid of the ugly parts; a history free from (or as close to it as possible) the whitewashing for the sake of... various interests ☕️ 🫖
@MakingEverydayMagic

I agree with you. There are many people who want to find a history devoid of any reference to religion. I just don't see how that could be accurate. I feel like understanding how religion played a huge role in history is crucial. I am not seeking a secular education devoid of religion, merely an education that does not promote religion. Inevitably they tend to promote one over others.
