Story of the World VS History Quest
As promised and highly requested, here is the side-by-side comparison of Story of the World and History Quest. We have talked about History an absolute ton and you all know why. It is just so hard to find the glass slipper fit with a secular history curriculum. We have given Story of the World a fair chance with 2 full years of using it. Time to switch it up and try History Quest. I have not used it yet and will keep you guys posted on my thoughts. Please let me know in the comments if you have used History Quest Early Times, how did you use it? What was your schedule like? As always, links to all the things down below.

I look forward to hearing how History Quest compares with your experience with SOTW! Our homeschooling is Classical Education modeled as we plan to learn through all of human history over 4 year span repeating three times through 12th grade. We are currently in our second year of SOTW (during the 1st and now 2nd grade of our oldest). We are using the activity books ONLY for the map/coloring sheets and review cards. I also have a younger child who will be 2nd grade age when we have completed 1-4 SOTW. With this in mind, I thought of starting SOTW over again but supplementing the older child's learning with independent history timeline project, the activity book crafts, and additional readings. Now I am thinking of transitioning to the History Quest curriculum to compare/contrast what we have already learned... Again, looking forward to your experiences with this curriculum. 😌 Thank you! Also, yes please to the CDs!

I love all the options in the the SOTW workbook b/c my kids have different learning styles, but we just pick what works for us and leave the rest. We do year round school so the number of chapters doesn't matter so far, but I totally agree that it's overwhelming and crowded info!

I'm a huge fan of using any curriculum for own way. Being able to "leave the rest" is an undervalued skill. Many homeschooling families, especially new homeschoolers think they have to do it all. Thank you for sharing!

Great review! We are actually using SOTW now with Build your library. They are redoing it with History Quest which I’m super excited about but we are on modern and they dont have it yet 😭 however it’s broken down differently and doesn’t use their workbook thank goodness 😂 It also uses the Usborne book which I just got and I love that book! We already did some of the links about The Palace at Versailles and my kids really liked it.

We used Curiosity Chronicles Ancients this year after buying it two years ago. At the time I thought the convo style would be fun for my son and it sorta is but it has also been so cringy for me (I actually stopped one chapter midplay because I just couldn't) and I feel like he doesn't get much from listening to it. Now that History Quest has a couple years of audiobooks in, we have switched to them for Middle Times for next school year. I'm super excited to start. I would love to switch right now but I didn't want to buy Ancients/Early Times all over so we are pushing through CC until we finish this year. The supplemental books that have gone with the CC text or that we pulled from Torchlight have made it bearable. Thankfully he loves history and I'm hoping switching to History Quest will make it much more streamlined and enjoyable for me too.

Yep ancient here too... My 25 yr old bought me a car a couple of years ago - it took him, his girlfriend, my 19 yr old, her boyfriend - their housemate and finally them all admitting defeat and actually reading the car manual to put a damn CD in the car. I didn't even know how the turn the computer *on* the first time I had to write up their reports - they had to show me... And my now 8 yr old had to teach me how to change the volume and stuff on the computer. I'm a bit of a technophobe - I tried to keep technology out of our lives for as long as possible and just let them be kids - we still don't have a TV... but really who needs one these days, then when my oldest was 16 he got his first job and he bought computers and game playing things - my youngest has basically grown up surrounded by technology and knows way more about it then I will ever know - my brain just isn't wired for workings of technology.

Yep, if it turns on I'm fine - if it's having issues... Nope. When my youngest was smaller and his siblings were trying to convince him of something - but he just wasn't buying it, their go to was well we better ask *the computer god* then, then they would pretend to ask the computer God the question whilst typing in what they wanted it to say - and say OK, now you have to press the magic button... And the "computer god" would speak!! And would confirm what they were saying.... I still don't know how they done this - this was the moment I realized their evil geniuses haha

Honest question: why history over social studies for Kinder? I'm struggling with this decision. I LOVE LOVE LOVE history, but I'm nervous about introducing it to my kindergartener because, you know, it can be ugly. How did your little one take to that? Or are these history curricula written to where they don't encounter it?
@MakingEverydayMagic
@MakingEverydayMagic 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like social studies is covered naturally in our daily lives, at least what I think of as social studies: neighbors, community, helpers. I also feel like many aspects will be covered in her geography. I don't have sensitive children and if I encounter an issue I may change it up. My little one has studied history along side her sister for 2 years and it has never been an issue.

@@MakingEverydayMagic it's a secular or faith neutral version of sonlight a popular literature based curriculum. Lots of books, each year has a core focus of history, Bible and literature in sonlight and in bookshark it's reading history through literature. Sonlight has missionary stories added in and bookshark uses biographies and autobiographies instead. The different levels or cores are designed for age ranges rather than grades so can be used with multiple kids. It's not the cheapest curriculum. But they do all the planning and sourcing of materials for you. Bookshark is supported by many charter schools who give funding for secular curriculum. But it's not for the minimalist with the booklist that it comes with. :)

How many days per week do you do history? I am struggling with figuring out how to balance it with science. I will be new to homeschooling next year. I have 2 kids, one going into 2nd grade and 1 going into 4th. We will do the following subjects all together: Science, music, poetry, Spanish(nothing fancy, I just want to build Spanish vocabulary), history, health and safety, social-emotional learning and spelling (yes they are both going to be doing All About spelling 1 because the 4th-grader is that bad of a speller!).
