Available on Xbox ONE and PS4, with a version already available through Steam. So the question as always, is whether this Sega Genesis collection is good, and whether it's worth paying £25/$29 for. We get over 50 games with this collection, including all the Sega classics; Sonic, Altered Beast, Bonanza Bros, Eswat, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes... you know the score. I bet every Master System and all the older Sega stuff (SC1000 and arcade) would fit on one disc with room to spare. Would imagine the licencing would be a nightmare.

Yeah, they'd have to stick to solely Sega published titles (as long as they still have the rights), but that's actually the vast majority.

Yeah I have a ROMset of all the Master system games and it comes in at around 550MB...Fits on a CD with room to spare.

Yeah I agree,a definitive SEGA SATURN collection for the current consoles would be a must buy,as long as the games were different from the XBLA SATURN games,which there’s around 30 ports & remakes of(& their some of the best Saturn games,like Radiant Silvergun)give or take a couple,there’s also quite a lot of Dreamcast games available on XBLA.A SATURN collection that included games like the Panzer Dragoon series,Burning Rangers(sonic teams best SATURN game has already been given an hd remake in a very good xbla version, that being Nights into dreams,Christmas NIGHTS is included aswell,the SATURN mode plays exactly the same as the original but the hd mode hasn’t got the smooth as silk gameplay feel)Dark Saviour,Virtua Cop 1&2,Street Fighter Zero(Alpha)3,Grandia(with English subtitles)the original Virtual On Cybertroopers & so on & on.I’d definitely buy it,it’d be a no brainier

On a serious note (sorry) the Steam version has just updated to the new version, and the lag has materialised here too. I'm sure it didn't lag like this before, Sonic is verging on unplayable

+James Harland, I can confirm that. But when you start it from within Steam software itself, there should appear a dialog box with 3 choices. Choose Simple Launcher. Works best for me.

If you have trouble with pressing A+Start for the Sonic 1 level select cheat, then hold A and press Start. That works on the original hardware.

It's interesting that it's a rehash of an older pc collection! I havnt been excited about this release because it's been done many times before. We need a Saturn/Dreamcast collection!

Agreed, a lot of these have been released on various collections since the mid-late 90's. Hell the SEGA Classic Collection on the PS2 was better as at least they tried to modernize the games while keeping the original feel of the games themselves.

Anto RetroGamer I agree. I LOVED the Master System and still play Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic 1, Sonic Chaos and Kenseiden even now today. Personally I am far more nostalgic for the Master System than for the Mega Drive.

I never grew up with the Master System, it was before my gaming time. The Mega Drive was my very first home console. Strange how Europe gets somewhat ignored regarding the Master System. It did well here too, SEGA! I am quite fond of the 8-bit Sonic 1 though. Have many videos on my channel, including an entire NO Damage playthrough for the Game Gear version. Feel free to check that out. It could do with some extra views...

Why am I Shalpp? Agreed! Some actual emulators, such picodrive or genesis plus cores on retroarch, have sound very similar to the real hardware. That post sound, from sonic 1 for example, have no issues there

Very weird indeed. Just take a look at Sonic Mega Collection PLUS for PS2, the emulation on that compilation was spot on, it was released in 2004, that didn't had problems with the sound. The emulation was so accurate that Sonic 2 would crash the entire system if you messed too much with Debug Mode, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles would revert to Sonic & Knuckles (don't know, it happened to me one time, i tried loading Sonic 3 stages using the Level Select screen but it was locked again).

You use Retroarch? Is there a way to make the games look a bit better on fullscreen? I mean, i know these 8 bit and 16 bit games all have low internal resolution, but i swear SMS and MD games look worse at fullscreen with Genesis Plus Core than Kega Fusion, and i find Retroarch bilinear filter worse than the Blur/CRT filter on Kega Fusion. But Kega Fusion didn't works well on Windows 10. Is there any other filter to make them look better. No need to be HD and that or Scanline filter.

As a 90's teen i can say i had a CRT TV(which i still have and is working fine) in my room with my consoles under it but i had no VHS. That was in the living room. Had a few VHS tapes in my room(the few i bought with my own money) but most were in the living room as well. Games i had quite a few more because when i had money on me i preferred buying games than VHS tapes(and looking at it now, it was a wise investment since those still have value now unlike the VHS tapes).

I hope he's really not suggesting Toejam & Earl or Comix Zone were part of those "crap games." Those were some of the best games for the system. Sure, we can dump Alex Kidd and Fatal Labyrinth and stuff like that, but those two definitely deserve to be on this collection.

I had to catch the bus when I went to elementary school, and wait for it by sitting in front of the TV watching early morning cartoons on USANetwork. So yeah I was up early, but not by choice. However when I was in middle school I was close enough to talk to it, and High school, me and my brother shared a truck, so no bus for us lol!

Shaun Blyth I could wrong, but I think the last port of Sonic 3, and Knuckles was on Windows 95/98 back in the late 90's, and it was not even a great port having to be played in such a small window on a lot of machines, and they screwed with the music as well, I was like WTF?!? but at least if you CD it's on you can get a really cool Sonic screen saver, and both the N. America, and Europe/Japanese Sonic CD soundtracks in Wav. format but it's a LQ mono to fit it all on disc before the days of Mp3, but it was still damn cool at the time.

This is because of that dumb 'virtual room' that is a waste of resources. These games can be easily emulated on 10 years old laptop or Raspberry Pi.

I was right to pass on this. The upcoming SEGA AGES series developed by M2 for Nintendo Switch sounds a lot more promising, as it will feature Master System and Arcade games. Saturn and Dreamcast titles have been rumored to be included.

It'll be hard for M2 to surpass their work on the various retro Sega 3DS up-ports. Many of them are THE definitive version of their respective game - and in 3D!

Shane Gibson Because this collection was marketed towards Western audiences, so it was developed by a Western studio and hence why it doesn't have a Japanese release.

Man, I loved my Genesis! Yet...I didn't have many of these games. I'm kinda looking forward to this. And yes, playing Aladdin was an incredible experience, I felt like I was playing the movie. Hahaha But I hear you, a master system or saturn/dreamcast compilation would be great.

The true way to play all of these games is to buy the Steam version, then dump the games from it and play them in Genesis Plus GX for no slowdown or sound issues.

Growing up on Atari 2600 then a combo of Intellivision thru a friend and SNES then Sony I missed all of the best an worst of Sega. So as a lifelong Sony fan I was thrilled when I heard of this coming for both Xbox and Ps4. So year after seeing this video I just ordered this for my PS4 thru Amazon. Thank you for this video and the passion you have for these games is easy to hear :).

I bought the full set of games and the base emulator a couple years back for not a lot of money during a Steam sale, played sonic for a bit, then it just sat there in my Steam list unplayed, cos I'm just terrible at maintaining an active gaming lifestyle... :P

Emulation on the Megadrive has been pretty much perfect since forever. It's not the fault of emulation in general that Sega can't make a competent emulator. I've been using good homebrew emulators long enough for this to make me barf.

Or at the very least some NEW games in the collection vs. the same games we've been seeing in these Genesis collections for ages. Also, there's no excuse for stuttering/slowdown due to emulation on the XB1/PS4, that's just piss-poor coding.

I know what you mean about about sega always going with the Mega Drive. It would be nice to see a compilation with some 90s arcade games, stuff like Sega Rally, Scud race, Virtua fighter/cop/racing/tennis/striker, HOTD, Fighting vipers, Daytona, Gunblade, Last bronx, Manx TT, Railchase.

The one Dreamcast game I've always wanted to be ported to newer systems is SoulCalibur. Not only did they improve the game graphics wise, they also added a better story mode than was included in the PS1 release of Soul Edge/Blade

Why so much hate for Altered Beast? I rather enjoy it!! As for the XBox One S being more powerful but the emulation not being perfect... that's easy! There's no Blast Processing on the XBOne!!

This compilation shows just how many intellectual properties Sega is letting gather dust; they need to stop churning out endless Sonic games and revisit these characters. And I agree, I would love to see Sega put out Master System, Saturn, and Dreamcast compilations.

As much as I loved my MegaDrive back in the 90s (and still do) it was actually 3rd party games I loved the most. Zero Tolerance, Micro Machines 96 Turbo Tournament, Cannon Fodder, Road Rash, Skitchen, General Chaos, Desert Strike, Theme Park, Lemmings, Lotus Turbo Challenge, Earthworm Jim, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, The list is just endless of great games that wont ever feature on this sort of collection (Legally) yes you can convert roms and put them into the Steam version.. but if you're doing that just grab Fusion Emulator with the correct bios and not only can you enjoy any mega drive game (even the ones you bought legit through steam) you can also play 32X games, and Mega CD games meaning you can rock out Dune, Sonic CD, Thunderhawk... ect... In short these collections really arent worth it these days. You can take the moral highground and say "I dont condone piracy thats why I buy it" but when Sega cant be bothered to go through what is needed to get some of their big hitting games on the compilation, I will feel cheated. How can you have Sonic 1,2 and 3D without 3&Knux? I am sure there are many other missing games on here.

I think the biggest issue I have with these constant barrage of compilation re-releases is that it kind of gives people the false impression that these were the only decent games on the console. Really wish Sega had made more of an effort to release the Sega Ages line here in the states and abroad besides the lone 3DS ports. I mean yeah, Classics Collection for the PS2 did poorly but that was because people really didn't grasp the fact that it was just budget re imaginings of older arcade hits. If they had also included the originals so that people could do a side by side, that would have helped greatly

Exactly, I agree completely. That's the double-edged sword of compilations. They can expose a new audience to a console they'd otherwise have no means of knowing anything about, but they can also negatively affect their entire view of the systems library, which is a huge problem. There are at least a dozen+ more great games that will never be on a release like this like Musha or the JP exclusive Yuu Hakosho fighting game.

I would have got this had it been by the developer of the previous compilation and it included more systems. I was looking forward to it but this video has completely changed my mind on it. I'll wait until the price is about £10 then I might think about it.

The Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection destroys this. It not only had bonus unlockables such as the arcade original versions of Shinobi (YES!), Space Harrier (YES YES!), Zaxxon, Congo Bongo, Fantasy Zone II (YES!), and Altered Beast. Along with a way to rate your games so you could sort them by your rating. You could view the original box art scans (though some could have used a bit of clean up in Photoshop to be honest). Another awesome feature was the ability to unlock original Sega developer video interviews. These were really interesting, and it was nice of Sega to include this. If I had it my way, I would also throw in a ton of original Genesis, Mega Drive (JPN & EUR) game commercials. As a Sega Genesis fan since 1989, this is what gets my nostalgia buttons pressed.

Come on Sega.. this is lazy like usual. Let's get a Sega Shinobi "Ultimate Ninja Collection". They could add the arcade original, which is one of the best in the series. Or how about a Golden Axe Collection with the arcade only, and perhaps the best Goden Axe game, Revenge of Death Adder. Let's see some VR support. I'd LOVE to see the Sega Scalers in VR. Space Harrier in VR... HELL YES!

Oh man, getting the level select code to work on real hardware is a nightmare, I had to dismantle all of my controllers, clean them, rebuild them, and I even had to cannibalise parts from an old broken turbo pad to repair my 3-button pad. Even after all this, it’s really hard to input it.

My intro sequence did exactly the same as yours, even when I moved the game files from external storage to internal storage. However after doing that, the emulation seems a little better. Still not perfect, but better!

I too would like a Saturn or Dreamcast compilation. Although there was one Dreamcast compilation made for the 360 and PC but only had 4 games.

The sky above the port was the colour of a television, tuned to a dead channel. Sorry, staring at a screen full of static always brings that line to mind (and makes me wonder how old you need to be to remember what it should actually be, rather than the current blue you get with digital TV)

I love these games and i've owned the pc verson of this for years now but it would be nice to see a Dreamcast collection or a Saturn collection. Sega have so many great first party games which have never been released on newer consoles or pc. These very same games were on a PS2 Megadrive collection and a PS3 one so they need to start changing it up.

What I would love to see is a Final Fantasy collection or a Dragon Quest collection. It'll never happen due to the series' existing on platforms owned by multiple companies, but they would be really nice to see.

About the sonic level select cheat. If you hold a then press start it always works guaranteed! If you press a and start together you're just basically gambling on whether you're hitting a or start first. Always done holding a then pressing start since way back when and never fails. There is a Dreamcast Collection (only a few games though). It was released on PC and Xbox 360 (XBLA releases on disc). Quite a few of the Sega 360 releases are backwards compatible on Xbox One too.

I'm SO torn with this release. I have all the Mega Drive titles that were released on Steam, but the emulation on that is so clunky, especially when using the Bedroom "foyer" and the original menu is so basic. But then this can be played, as you say, in the living room on the telly which is how I really want to play these games. Honestly, I'll probably end up getting it, but I'll most likely wait until a sale. BTW, awesome video! P.S. This is probably a stupid question, but do you know if once the physical version is installed off of disk, can you play it WITHOUT the disk in? I ask because I'd love to play the odd half hour of SoR or Sonic between "main" XBOX games, but don't want to be constantly swapping out disks. Hmm, maybe the digital version is the way to go but the fanboy in me wants that physical copy.

Was thinking the same the other day, Sega have done Mega Drive (and mainly Sonic) compilations to death! It's lost the nostalgia factor for me as they just keep digging it up whether it's a software compilation for a modern console or those AT Mega (I think) consoles with built-in games. But I suppose the fact I've been using Mega Drive emulators for 20 years also has a part to play.

I decided to buy it. For $30, it's not a bad deal for an easy way to play these games on a TV that looks good. I wish there were a few other games, like Battletoads and Castlevania. There's a fair amount of crappy games though. I mostly got it to play sonic, streets of rage, golden axe though I may dabble in a few of the others.

Yeah you're right, why not do collections of Master System, Saturn etc. These can't cost much to knock out, and the Master System and Dreamcast were very popular back in the day. Loved your 'thrust into a teenagers bedroom' maybe I'll send a copy of this to me ex (poor girl) for some sweaty flashbacks haha!!!

Its nice to see a vid like this. Others are creaming over this like this is a first in gaming. I've had these games for fricking decades and in "HD" for 10...SEGA already has these on Steam for a loooong time with BETTER results! And yeah its cheaper now in this compilation than buying the Steam ones individually but I bought these old same ports on Steam for far less with more features. Theres too much gushing about this version. Still its a million times better than what the Switch is getting from SEGA.

I've got the Sonic Mega Collection Plus on my PS2, and while it is a mostly Sonic only game, it has many more extras than this game. You can view the whole season 1 of the Sonic comic books, there are various pieces of lore, some cool behind the scenes on Sonic Hereos, as well as a couple unlockable games. This game also let you play both Genesis and GameGear games, which I wish this could. Why not just add the GameGear as DLC, and have it sitting on the table or something?

Mac Burrton I agree, but I'll counter with two words: online multiplayer. I have a raspberry Pi 3 setup with retropie, but the allure of online multiplayer, challenges, and bolstering my gamerscore playing games I love was enough to justify it.

They already have a mini Genesis that has most of these games, and I believe all of these games, or nearly all of them, were released in a compilation on the PS3 on ONE DISC (which to this day I think is their best compilation because it included unlockable Master System games too).
