Louis is the Julius Sumner Miller of timber. Ironically Julius was a Miller. Extraordinary knowledge and capacity to transfer it. I love this man and his humanity. Thank you sir!

It's taken 7 years of hard work to start feeling comfortable in the knowledge of my trade. Even so, I would seriously consider leaving my job and starting all over again if it meant working for this guy. His knowledge and ability to explain clearly is the most enviable thing I have seen on youtube in a long, long time. Tradespeople of this level are beyond rare; such complete knowledge. Whoever his apprentice is, is a lucky, lucky guy/gal

What an offer, and difficult to resist the urge to just pack it all in and start again, however I live in New Zealand with my family and have very recently landed a comfortable, stable job in my trade (industrial measurement technician) shifting now would be unfeasible. HOWEVER, with so much knowledge and such a way with words in the manner in which you explain concepts, you almost owe it to all of those who have taught you that vastness to find an appretice or two. That kind of learning cannot be contained in a book, nor taught in a lecture theater, its necessary to pass as much of that knowlege and good trade practises on as possible. Preferably young people who still thirst to learn and don't already have bad habits entrenched. I would bet in your area there will be quite a few willing to hit the ground running for you; the right one for you just needs to be found. I would think the pick and choose would be yours, especially in these economically trying times.

Watching these videos reminds me of visiting my wifes grandfather, he would be out in his shop hand crafting incredible cabinets or furniture for people or businesses that appreciated his talents. I miss working with him and learning, his knowledge was incredible. I really believe it would take decades working with him to learn what he knew.

This man represents what education is all about. He can handle the invisible and silent logic that the technology he uses contains and at the same time his vocabulary and language ability enable his to transfer his mental knowledge to all around him, Additional to that he is not merely offering us an opinon but he is brave enough to construct his ideas and GUARANTEE what he talks about , what he conceives and what he hews with his own ability. Now that is complete Education. Few people have to courage and ability to see a concept being handled from the start to design and construction and commissioning and future maintenance, He has such a logical mind, Congratulations for such a complete education .

At 2:30 that's what my Uncle Ben called "iron sick". My family lost a really nice little sedan cruiser to iron sickness. It was built during the war when civilians couldn't get bronze screws.

That was a heavy leaner. Trees like that have a lot more stresses in the rings than trees that grew upright. Trees that grow on the lean have the heart offset, and rings densely compacted on the downhill side, and more loosely bunched on the uphill side. Trees like that relax in a way that causes them to twist more, even when quarter sawn. It's a hard thing to find a tree of the right species and size, and the right grade to suit any given project. Of equal importance is ring count/inch. More rings = longer/slower growth time. High ring count trees are heavier, even for the same species, but they're stronger and much more stable.
