On with the video!
Want to know how to stop a sucker punch? Sorry! You can’t stop a sucker punch! A sucker punch is a surprise attack... and it can happen to anyone.
Now, yes-there are things you can do to decrease the odds of being sucker punched, but the fact is even when you hang out in safe places, with people you trust, and you pay attention to what’s going on, you can still get sucker punched.
But that doesn't mean you can't survive a sucker punch. So, here are three tips that just might help!
Tip #1: Set one foot in front of the other.
With your feet together, you’re basically asking to get knocked down. But by setting one foot in front, you not only have better balance, you take up more space. Which is great for self-defense.
More space means more time to see what’s happening and make decisions. It also makes it harder for people to crash into you.
Another thought... if you see a punch coming, you'll probably drop into some type of fighting stance with one foot in front of the other anyway. So, don't wait for a punch. Make it a habit to always stand in a secret fighting stance.
It sounds crazy, but I even stand with one foot forward at the urinal. That's because I once got shoved at a urinal. Don't let that happen to you! Stand strong and keep your shoes dry.
Tip #2: Keep your hands free and up front. If your hands are down, behind you, or in your pockets, you're wide open for a clean shot to your head. Don't do that!
Police officers, security guards, and bouncers all keep their hands free and up front because they know a situation can go bad any time and they want to be prepared to protect themselves. You should, too!
Tip #3: Dress for self-defense success. For example, you’ll never catch me wearing a hoodie. Why? Because any idiot can grab that hood and pull it over my head, swing me around, or choke me out.
I also don’t wear flip flops or skinny jeans that droop around my butt. Why? Because I always want to be ready to run or kick. My advice is to never wear clothes that can be used against you or keep you from defending yourself.
If all this talk about getting sucker punched sounds a little paranoid, relax. The fact is that when you make safety a habit, you don’t have to worry about it!
So, focus on preparation not paranoia. Put one foot in front, keep your hands free, dress for success, and then go find something else to worry about. :)
