I've been doing construction for over 30 years. Granted, I'm an electrician, but I spend a lot of time on large construction sites (commercial buildings in NYC), and I've never seen a bucket handle break on anyone. Now I'm wondering why? It's bound to happen, right? Sooner or later, it'll happen to some poor guy with a full bucket of something. And dear lord - it must be a nightmare if it happens in someone's home. I am so sorry that happened to you, brother. That just sucks. Vaya con dios! (Makes crossing gesture) 🤣

@@JohnSmith-mk1rj when mixing 3 part zinc rich epoxy its bound to happen if using a plastic 5 gal. 🪣 73#s of metal dust goes into a 2 gallon liquid mixture. Equaling roughly at minimum 85-90 #s per 3.25 gallon liquid paint mix. So 5 gallons in a plastic bucket repeatedly equals failure. This is from real life experience FYI. 😆

We would get buckets from the dumpster and clean them out to use for thinset, grout, etc. Sadly, some paint buckets are a bit taller than the standard sheetrock mud bucket. You'd be smart to avoid those, though many have not. Those taller buckets are the devil for stairs.

Good tip with the expanding foam. Was on a job a couple of years ago and the guys doing the levelling didn't properly seal the edges. Poured the compound, and it was a big pour, and a load of it found a gap at the perimeter and went straight into the electrical cupboard in the basement below covering a huge row of fuse boards. Whole lot had to be replaced at HUGE cost.

You know what, I will like to see the building plans , updated stamped set please, find the plumbing, floor plan and wall type schedules, grab the specification book, i want it right here next to the plans at all times. Self leveling means no need to mess with it after pouring. But I like that you made sure it was spread evenly. I do the same, it just makes it look better when dry
@crawdoogie
@crawdoogie Жыл бұрын
In this case you need to spread the leveler as he did. The self-leveling mix is more viscous than water and the expanded metal lath slows the spreading. It is also a sunny California day so his mix is going to set up pretty fast. Just look at how watery the mix was when it was first mixed. By the time it took to go up the stairs and pour it the mix had already become noticibly thicker. Most likely this floor is to provide a solid level base for some sort prefab base like Schluter that will provide the correct slope.

If you can pull the sheet right back up after stapling then what was the point and if you are gonna mix out side carry 1 bucket at a time and hold it front of you ready for the handle to break. 2 runs is better then a day of cleaning.

Water, or any liquid will find it's own level. So all you gotta do it mix your thin set thin enough to flow like water and have you shower pan damned or formed in, add the reinforcing wire as done here and pour. I like how it damned the drain. That was a useful idea. To bad you can't float walls this way. Mixing it thick enough to stay on the walls at vertical can be a job in itself.

So, I’ve never seen a video where anyone puts down wire mesh. I have a bathroom on wood subfloor that has high and low spots. Level or would be a good way to fix my small issue. Is an approved primer and leveler not the way to go and is the primer and mesh shown in the video the absolute best way to go? I may or may not tile, just looking for a solid flat base for a vinyl plank, or tile, we’ll see
@travisk5589
@travisk5589 2 жыл бұрын
@@lesg9604 you will want primer and wire mesh when using it over plywood. Keep in mind that your wood substrate needs to be strong enough to support the weight of tile and in turn the self leveler. Wire mesh and primer is always to be used over unless stated by the manufacturer. No need for wire over concrete foundation but you will still want to use a primer. Ardex liquid backerboard is a great self leveler for on top of plywood. There are many companies that make equivalent products. As for not seeing wire mesh used in other videos. People can be cheap and stuck in their ways. It's very common to hear a tile setter say, "I have been doing it this way forever. " That doesn't make it right. An improper instal might last 5 years, might last 10 years. Both of which will let the installer off the hook in case of failure. What TC is doing will last 30 years. So, I for one will pay the extra money for piece of mind knowing that I will never have an issue with the install. So yes, primer wire mesh and self leveler is the Best way to go for your instal but it might be over kill. Most importantly make sure that your wood floor is not flexing. Some people use stuff like fix all to fix small high/low spots. But I have done enough tear outs to know that fix all doesn't stick to wood. I do the primer, wire, self leveler if you have more that 1/4 inch to deal with

never used self leveler before? 6 tips you NEED to know, especially if using more than one buckets worth: 1. go faster then you think you need to go, when using 2 separate pours 2. if using separate pours, even five minutes of mixing between, will give inconsistent results as the first pour hardens. 3. a squeegee between first pour and second is not enough to spread first pour into second pour, as first pour is less runny and "starting to set". 4. lowe's employees never even heard of the agitated spike roller. home depot wanted 55$ for it. didn't buy it? should have. 5. few passes of foam spray into thin lines vs a fat bead. fat bead leaves up to an inch of "expansion joint" around the room.. also leaves a inconsistent foundation for new tile. not sure if i need to cover with ditra for this reason. the foam roll staples to wall would have been better. 6. it's gonna leak through ANY crack it can. duct tape is enough to cover anything you don't want it to go through. hope this helps somebody

Serious question. Won't the level crack eventually with the movement of the house? Also because it's on top of wood? I know the mesh or whatever is to help with that but how much honestly?

Yup This guy claims to be a pro but fixes more of his own mistakes than any contractor I have ever seen. You are correct. It is going to crack. He should also have had a barrier down

I've been doing commercial flooring for 10 years and would never recommend self-leveling over wood. We always use backer board or underlayment

Yes it will. People tend to think self leveler is a fix all and it is absolutely not. Especially over wood surfaces.

Paper will defeat the purpose. You'll see he primed the wood then the wire lathe. The primer seals the wood and the self lev. will bond too the primer. The problem here IMO is that a 3/4" subfloor alone is not Ridgid enough. Either throw down another 3/4" sheet of plywood or do a mud job. Respect

I had to do it in the basement of my last house. Where I was putting the toilet it was an inch out of level in 3'. I mixed and poured the self leveler and feathered it at the edges. The floor was perfect.

Just so you all know. Your basement floor is out of plumb for a reason. Lmfao. Most if not all are out of plumb so water will drain to a drain... Find a better system then adding to the problem. They make subfloor that allow water to drain under it for basements..

@@homesteadhaven2010 my floor was out of level in that area because that used to be the laundry area. I busted up the floor and relocated the laundry and built a nice bathroom.

You’re supposed to skim coat that with chief modified thin set. Not to mention metal lath is the half assed way to do things. I don’t know why you don’t just screw and glue some backer board. And if you’re not going to do that for height reasons you should use an anti-fracture membrane.

OK question from a homebuilder, why did you pull a tarpaper off the mesh I would think, leaving the tarpaper down over the top of the mess will protect the wood from termites? Ex-Tex Builders LLC

Hold on. If that subfloor is only 3/4 plywood there is absolutely no way that will last. If it's over concrete slab that's fine. For example of your doing a mud job the minimum thickness is 1". That gives you 1 3/4" to tile over and I'm guessing the self lev. on the high side is just enough to cover the mesh. No way is that gonna last. Maybe I'm missing something. Respect to you
