Episode Two
In this episode we are using the old Appalachian way of creating a Go-Devil Log Sled to remove large timber. We have a problem in NYS. Ash trees are dying left and right. One particular tree on our land has died and is a threat to our barn and our future root cellar. The "Y" in this tree is perfect for us to make the log sled and haul the tree out safely. We are fortunate to have an ATV to assist but an animal would work too. We will be able to use this tool over and over on the homestead. Don't forget to like and SUBSCRIBE!
ABOUT ME:
Hi my name is Allison and I moved to the woods with my husband and four children. I am a registered nurse that did not comply which ultimately ended my employment. With such a significant change in our lives, we are taking this as a sign to follow our dreams and live a more simple and self reliant life in the woods. Subscribe to the channel to follow along and see what we get up too, how we prep, and how we live simply in a 650 square foot cabin.

Great stuff;I have used a very similar A frame contraption ,dragging posts with a horse. The legs on the frame were about 3 feet long,so it didn’t tip over. There was a groove on the underside to accomodate the chain, which went underneath the front of the Y section and up behind the cross piece and around the log or posts or whatever and snigged back onto the chain itself,so the chain was always in tension when pulling. The chain going underneath also gave some upward lift to the front when in motion. It worked very well and was very easy on the horse. A couple of sticks in those chain holes meant that I could pile up a load of posts, throw the chain around them, then under and up and away you go.😊God bless.

Thank you for your comment! My husband read through it and thought it was a great idea. We were thinking longer legs would help because we do have tipping problems with larger logs. Horses are in our future and we definitely want to use them for this!

Nice ! Enjoyed. Brings back memories from 1978. I literally fell over a piece of tree like this and ended up using it the way you did. Harvested around twenty five chords of shake bark hickory. Kept if dry. Warmed the farmhouse for eight years/

Chain boomers are a good way of clinching chain around stuff

Or build a log arch with two wheels or make a tobagan to drag your wood on

I'm guessing lessons were learned here, if only that a sled isn't very useful for such small stuff (

My man Ben needs to work on his ax handling skills. He looks very awkward handling that ax. He needs a heavier drill too. Get the DeWalt Hammer Drill. It’s the next step up from the drill you’re using but about 10x more powerful

Hmm I thought he did great! He was a boat builder so handling wood tools isn’t new to him. Thanks for watching!
