Richard, congratulations on choosing locksmithing as a vocation. For me it is an avocation (a second career) which began in 1981. It started by attending a trade school for introductory locksmithing, taking two correspondence courses, performing on-the-job training, and then becoming self employed. It is a noble and rewarding profession, indeed. When I began training I was employed at General Motors World Headquarters as an executive secretary working under the manager of Stock Holder Relations, a department in Public Relations. Locksmiths can come from many different backgrounds. If I can say so, I consider Jason of SE Lock & Key to be a Master Locksmith, but I cannot claim that title for myself. My best to you!

Very cool video 👍 I think you’re the only channel that shows anything worthwhile about working on antique locks. After I get in the new shop, I’m gonna work on that little hutch lock you gave me that takes a flat key.

Thank you Jason for this excellent video. Your methodology in realigning the hutch lock permitted us vital knowledge when working with metal and tolerances, and to reach a valid conclusion when problem solving (such as this, where the customer used the wrong key and forced the lock). This is real world trouble shooting. My father was a tool and die maker for the automobile industry and often spoke of the importance of metal tolerances when creating a master die. Locking systems have very high tolerances, especially in high security applications. Thanks, again! (BTW, Space X Falcon Heavy was successful in launching ARABSAT - 6A in early evening, and in recovering all three booster rockets with retro-burn, two at The Cape and one on a drone barge). Go For It!

Hi Jason. Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I did wonder if it's a StarsKey problem with this Hutch lock. Thanks again for your time.

I’ve had a run on cabinet lock keys for the last 3 weeks. The locks all need some TLC. I love to repair and make keys for these.

Cool fix Jason. If it was me I prob would have put that 4/40 screw in the drill and file some of the threads away except the tip that screws into the main housing. Saves drilling out the levers.

I can hear her now. "How can it be the wrong key ? I've always used that key" "That was the key my grandmother gave me with that cabinet" Sorry but that substitute key is pretty ugly.

I've got an old bookcase with a lock like that one. After moving house, I couldn't turn the key to open it. It's like a spring keeps pushing out the key when I try to turn it. The key is just like the one in the BBB Ideo. Tubular barrel, the h ok let in the centre won't stay in the corresponding nub inside the lock. I'm tearing my hair out.

If you need to create a set screw, cut the head off and use a dremel to cut a groove in it for a flathead. Congratulations, you have a set screw.

If it's just used to keep the door closed, a magnet kit for 50 cents will do the trick but not so authentic. :/ Since when do people fix stuff now days anyway?🤔🤑
