Great video. I have those mortise locks all through my house, and the front door is a two key version much like that one. Now that I'm retired, I'll give a try at restoring a couple of them to operation - the video certainly helps.

Awesome job I also like restoring old locks. FYI plain old white vinegar works great for removing rust. Just let the parts soak in it a couple of hours. When tropical storm Debby hit in 2012 my shop flooded I had 2 feet of water in the shop for days, had to close for 2 weeks. Needless to say any tools or parts (keys also) in lower drawers rusted. Vinegar saved the day. Also lemon juice works pretty good for tarnished keys.

Good tip man those acids in the lemon's and vinegar work good. An old lady I used to know used to use ketchup to polish the brass on her old locksets.

Thanks for the info. Our house came with a beautiful, but hard to find, Russwin mortise lock that I want to restore and make a key for. With the information from your videos, I now know what to do.

Great work and wonderful restoration. Any idea who the original maker was? The different approaches to the detent design on the rocker switches seems to be one of the biggest differentiators for locks from that period.

I found an antique mortise door lock in my backyard while metal detecting. Its probably the biggest metal detecting find that iv'e ever gotten. It was caked in rust and barely recognizable but after a jug of rust remover, all of it came off. Whats weird about the find is the location it was in. I found it in a particular spot, which is about 2 feet in range where there was a particular amount of glass. Pieces of mason jars, broken bottles, and even a whole plate! Iv'e never seen so much glass in one area, especially with a door lock in it. Can somebody help me figure out why I found it like this? My mom told me there could have been a house or something near by long ago. Since there was so much open land at the time, no one had anywhere to put their trash, so they just threw it out side.

Evapo-Rust is good for removing rust, just soak the parts in it, and it's not as nasty as some.
@koncrete78395 жыл бұрын
That is true, however the product used in the video does more than just remove rust. It chemically changes the rust to a protective surface as well as passivating the surface. Thereby giving it some protection from further rusting in future.

I just picked up another 4 of these locks. And I lucked out getting a "biscuit tin" for Christmas. What the best way to figure out which blanks I need? Measure the keyhole?
@selock3 жыл бұрын
Post diameter and blade height are the two most important measurements. Blade width almost always needs to be cut down on the “more available” styles of keys out there so it’s not as important. It’s incredibly difficult to reduce post diameter though :)

where did you get the bands to make the new springs. ???

Spring Steel from anywhere that sells it. (McMaster Carr, etc)

really interesting lock. Any idea who the manufacturer was? Do you heat your replacement spring steel to bend/form them to shape?

I know you'll hate me, but trying to give constructive opinion. the over the shoulder camera angle means we see lots of hands and a lot less of what you're doing at the desk. Is there an option to have the camera clamped to the woodwork above the new mic (which sounds great btw) facing down on what you're doing ? you can tell me to do one, but I enjoy your content and just wanted to provide some good feedback.
@selock5 жыл бұрын
Julian Shaw I was irritated about that camera angle :( apologies, will different next time

No apology needed, I don’t have the skill to do what you’re doing. Keep on doing what you’re doing, the content is great
