September 5 | Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) joins MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. On Monday, Whitehouse wrote a letter Chief Justice John Roberts to lodge an ethics complaint against Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for violating several canons of judicial ethics.
Whitehouse’s formal complaint follows revelations that Justice Alito accepted but did not disclose gifts of luxury travel and exclusive lodging from right-wing billionaires, one with business before the Court. Justice Alito then made public comments opining on the constitutionality of Whitehouse’s Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency legislation to reform the Court’s lax ethics regime, which passed the Senate Judiciary Committee in July. Justice Alito’s comments also implicated ongoing Senate investigations into Justice Alito’s undisclosed gifts.

One thing these "Justices" have *not* forgotten is that they - themselves - LEGALIZED dark money bribery in their 2010 Citizens United decision. Our OWN SCOTUS is responsible for the mountains of anonymous $$$ from oligarchs, both foreign and domestic, which has infested our *entire* Federally elected government and they are *also* responsible for the fact that it only took six years to produce tRump. Fascism never sleeps.

Beware Lawrence is reporting according to the desires of advertisers, just think of the commercials you like least. For me it is the drug commercials, who wants "explosive diarrhea" as a side affect? Know this as you listen 70% of MSNBC advertising revenue is big pharma. Hence the silencing of Kennedy, West, Williamson.

Totally agree, usually where there's smoke there's fire so apply the ethics across the board. I believe someone must have shared this type of behavior as a way to receive perks and everyone else does it so you will be fine. My concern is that the highest bids are ruled in favor of the case. We sequester jurors to get a fair trial, we ask them to avoid outside influence Shouldn't we expect the same from SC, so they don't appear compromised?

It would certainly be better than the current system which allows Thomas et al to run wild. The potential problem would be that often senate seats can be gained by massive funding of campaigns and in the case of a MAGA Senate bought by Leo's billionaires it would just enforce it's own corruption. Remember how these corrupt justices got their in the first place. Something seriously needs to be done. We can't have lifelong justices sitting there based on network of corrupt interests. I look to Senator Whitehouse for solutions. Greater Senate oversight of SC might help as at least Senators would be _somewhat_ held to account by the electorate if they fail to remove a corrupt justice. It doesn't stop MAGA following republican politicians making awful self serving decisions to block progress though so another piece of the puzzle is needed.

Alito and Thomas seem to think it's just fine to accept lavish overtures. They may argue that they deserve what anyone else might recieve. In fact, no. The highest law in the land should be served by only those who eschew what the rest of us might want. They should be ascetics who find no use for vacations or rich friends or material trappings. In essence, they should be constantly mindful and devout not much unlike a monk.

That's the issue, as the ultimate arbiters of law, they alone should realize they are held to a much, much higher standard. Kavanaugh should have never been confirmed and Thomas and Alito, just through the optics of receiving gifts, have damaged the prestige of the SCOTUS. Accountability is the only remedy to this and it should be swift and decisive - impeachment.

On its face, it seems unethical that the SC or any sitting judge would say that they do not have to honor any ethics whatsoever, nor can any institution in the country claim the authority to force them to do so. That there is a very real living ethical conundrum.

YES!! Thank You Senator Whitehouse for fighting so hard for this cause. Alito, would say something like that. Alito is one of a few that should be impeached, and he wants to complain about a request for ethics requirements. Justices before these came in non partisan, non bias towards religion not bought by corporate greed, so we had no need for an ethics code. With these we need it. Those that arent guilty wouldnt mind it.

What good is a code that is policed by the police? The American system of Constitutional guardrails is just window dressing with no real enforcement by those who are the very ones that violate it. Seems like the U S is going rogue in the extreme parts of congress , the x presidency and now the justice department. You mean the SCOTUS, not the Justice department. The Supreme Court is one of the three branches of the US government while the Justice Dept. Falls under the Executive branch. The Executive branch nominates individuals for Legislative approval to the court. The Legislative branch also can impeach justices.

Public perception of the Supreme Court of the United States is highly critical, particularly towards certain individuals on the court. These individuals appear as imbalanced extremists who distort ethical principles. This distortion of ethics is a perversion of justice that originates from within the Supreme Court itself. As a result, there is a strong public outcry for change, accountability, honesty, and transparency to address this imbalance and degradation of the highest court in the country.

If I had known of all the benefits of being a Supreme Court Justice I would have done everything that I could to get on that gravy train. Man, having those billionaires giving out all those expensive gifts. Sweet. No ethic code to have to follow. Or taxes on those expensive gifts. The power of the Supreme Court Justices! They will easily make laws to protect themselves to keep on being on that gravy train. (It should be obvious that I am being fallacious.)

Senator Whitehouse has always been our hidden secret in saving Democracy. He is so quiet and unassuming, doing the People's work without all the drama. THEN WHEN HE SPEAKS.....we know how hard he has been working, and we listen. I have longed for a Whitehouse/Raskin ticket or a Raskin/Whitehouse ticket, I'm not fussy. I am so grateful for the work of Senator Whitehouse. If we had a legislature full of Whitehouse's, this country would not be in this mess.
