Blessed with astonishing power and poise, Sergei Polunin took the dance world by storm and became the Royal ballet's youngest ever principal. At the peak of his success, age 25, he walked away, driven to the brink of self-destruction by stardom - his talent more a burden than a gift. Join Polunin and director Steven Cantor as they discuss this unprecedented look into the life of a complex young man who has made ballet go viral. Urban rebel, iconoclast, airborne angel, Sergei is transforming the shape of ballet as we know it. But virtuosity comes with a high price. How can you be free to be yourself when you are ballet's 'hottest property'?

Finally an interviewer who asks good questions and is very respectful. I recently watched a recent interview of Sergei with a very rude woman pushing her own agenda to the interview. This is a breath of fresh air.
@YouAreMySunshine2
@YouAreMySunshine2 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I saw that too. Fortunately the comments under that interview on YT are very pro Sergei. The woman interviewer was an inappropriate hag and treated this great artist and gentleman as if he were dirt beneath her feet for daring to have a different opinion than her PC world.
@macy.r8
@macy.r8 5 жыл бұрын
@@YouAreMySunshine2 Exactly. I don't agree with a lot of Sergei's views but if I were to interview him (or anyone) my only goal would be to get data, not interpret it. The viewers should make up their mind on it, it wouldn't be my job to push the conclusion to them. That interview really grated on my nerves and Sergei is a patient man to deal with it without snapping.
@timothysmith7888
@timothysmith7888 4 жыл бұрын
Respectful? Yes. Good Questions? Certainly seems like they were questions his viewers would be asking. Unless he was being deliberately shallow (a valid possibility, to see if Ballet’s Bad Boy has a temperament and a short fuse), the host was at best, inarticulate and pedestrian. In response, I thought Mr. Polunin demonstrated a generosity of Grace, Spirit and Restraint, as did the filmmaker. Actually, I have to give it a second listen. I was so offended and distracted by “natural to you”, and, “easy for you”, that I found it hard to listen after that. So..., I’ll give this lightweight a second chance...
@macy.r8
@macy.r8 4 жыл бұрын
@@timothysmith7888 My original comment was meant to highlight only the fact that this interview is way better than other interviews done for Sergei. Other interviewers have always been very judgemental of him and his ideals. But in this interview, the interviewer remained objective. Does not matter if he's articulate or not. This interview is still above the others just for the fact that it does not attempt to provoke Sergei or to attack.
@avieneyard
@avieneyard 3 жыл бұрын
@@timothysmith7888 you speak my mind. Had to go back to listen to what his question was ('natural' one), and then repeated again with the same sentiment ('easier for you'). Gee, he had to work hard, even harder, longer hours than others- what do you mean? Glad the director answer it for him

I like the way Steven Cantor takes on that almost paternal tone, the minute he highlights the talent of Sergei Polunin. There is great respect on his part to the dancer, the same respect shown by other subjects of his documentaries. really a beautiful and correct human attitude.

I was exposed to classical ballet early on. As a child, in North Hollywood, my family lived in a house flanked by one immediate neighbour who was a Russian ballerina who appeared on television every week (in the troupe of the then famous June Taylor Dancers) and on the other side by a retired touring classical concert artist, the entire neighbourhood full of actors, movie and early television technicians, screenwriters, et al. My mother was on friendly personal terms with the great Alicia Alonso and she loved dance and dancing very, very much and she, along with my step-father, were terrifically good ballroom dancers themselves. Dance was an important part of our family life. However, it was not until my 60s that I really became practically addicted to dance, as my personal mobility started to decline. Seeing the free and uninhibited corporal motion of fine dancers uplifts and inspires me now that I cannot even take walking with ease for granted. I exult in the mobility and elegance of motion of fine dancers. That makes me an enthusiast of dance nowadays more than ever before.

I believe that he was meant to come back to dance in order to revolutionize the public interest and access to ballet, and to the conditions dancers have been under in the past; artists should be their own entities and not that of the system, and should be paid what they are worth, having not only put countless hours of their lives into their dance education, but also money their families have had to sacrifice. I have heard him say many times that these things have become important to him due to his experience at the Royal Ballet, and that ballet is out of the reach and sight of the majority of people who will pass it by for other art forms when it's not accessible to them. He would like dance to become mainstream and not just for the elite. He could be a strong voice in this since he has lived it and also is a prestigious dancer. I say go Sergei!!

@@gordoloboalbondigas It seems so odd that Misha has almost disappeared. Try watching "Other Dances" to Chopin with ballerina Makarhova--two Imperial dancers schooled by Balanchine, she near the end of her career, he at his prime just after he defected in Canada. Clips from the movie "The Turning Point" spotlight his incredible performances for American Ballet Theater, reprising roles in classical ballets such as Swan Lake and Don Quixote. Or just look at the last act of Don Quixote (ABT, with ballerina Cynthia Harvey) my favorite! Let me know what you think. I would love to talk ballet with someone! Misha described Nureyev as "the whirlwind from the steppes." Why were the Russians so good?

Adding to my own former comment in reply to yours, he himself refers on numerous occasions to the massive amount of work he did as a kid and from then on---the talent was w/o doubt observed as a small child, but the work required to bring that talent to these heights of achievement reflects not only the talent w/which he was gifted.

Thanx for this interview.....it’s cleared up a few questions for me. After watching him dance over many days, I cant figure out why some people dont see the kind & gentle soul in this man! His prodigous talent has a source somewhere, & I suspect it flows from the soul. But I wiil say, he is also a magnificent example of male beauty & grace. He projects a masculine sensuality when he moves that is highly erotic, however, it doesnt inspire lust. It inspires deep longing. Please keep dancing, SP. I’m very glad to hear your love for the dance has reawakened. When I watched the music vid, I could see that something was shifting beneath the surface.....it shone thru the brilliant choreography (if one had the eyes to look).

AOL interviewer: “...that came so naturally to you...” “... that was so easy for you...” Interviewer didn’t listen, didn’t hear, “I started when I was three...I worked “twice more than normal”, put in three times the time and effort as the others...”! The aol host was clueless, oblivious to the relentless dedication and sacrifice, of this phenomenal Artist/Athlete/Olympian/Dance Warrior & Intellect/Ballet Royalty/Dance Deity, pushing himself beyond all human limits. I suppose aol is not the place to look for deeply informed, intelligent, artful and insightful or skilled and probing interviews. It grieves me that Sergei has to be subjected to interviewers who are woefully less than equal to the task, and opportunity in front of them. END OF MY INITIAL POST. I stopped, paused, took a deep breath, and gave it a second listen. I’m leaving the bitterness I expressed in the post above as is, but adding a humble observation: I’m not sure what the host was trying to ask, but, perhaps he was also struggling to put words to his own intuitive and instinctive process. I would agree that when Polunin dances, it appears so natural and effortless to him, he performs with such ease. I wonder if Polunin acquired that...Skill? Artistry? Elegance? Bravura? or if it is innate? What’s it like to be lightening in a bottle, to harness the sun? When all is said and done, because Polunin was eloquent in response to the host, it’s a really good interview. (Time for me to zip my lip!)

Can some english-speaking tell me if his english is perfect language, or if he has a russian accent?

He sounds like any other Russian speaking English but he has a very good vocabulary. The words he is using are placed in the correct order as far as English verb conjugation goes and he's stumbling for words far far less than most people that are speaking English as a second language. The accent/tone is definitely not English but his Russian accent isn't as hard to understand as is the majority of Russians I've heard speaking English. He obviously put time and effort into his classes when he was learning English.

Aubrey Smithwick He's not Russian, he's Ukrainian. They do have similar accents to Russian ones because Ukrainian and Russian are similar languages and also a lot of Ukrainians speak Russian. I'm guessing the reason he doesn't have such a strong accent is because of living in the UK.

Stephanie L+ Russian people hear Ukrainian and Russian accents very well. He does not know the Ukrainian language, by the way. His family is from Russian-speaking Ukrainians, resettled after World War II (his surname and his interview proves it).

Sergei has a Russian name.. or Ukrainian? oh wait...there is no difference. He speaks both languages because they are almost identical He is an orthodox christian. As you may know Ukraine and Russia share the same religion. He has Ukrainian coat of arms on his left hand and Russian coat of arms oh his right hand, hmm. What is the difference then?

Seriously, there is no difference. Every second Russian have a Ukrainian relative for example - a grandmother or a grandfather or every second a Ukrainian have relative from Russia - a grandfather or a grandmother. So, what is the difference? Only a residential location and political views...
