When using Uncompressed Recording, the transmitter's internal recording restarts a new audio file every 30 minutes and the restart is NOT clean. The internal recording skips a little as it starts every recording.

That's a powerful reason to follow TLDR's advice, and to record in the compressed mode.

Hey hey Walid and Robert! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! That is a big thing! I did notice that uncompressed split the file into 30min chunks, but didn't realize you actually lose a moment between each file! It would be the worst luck ever if the signal dropped right at the file cut off mark! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

After reading this I tried to replicate your result. I set the transmitters to record uncompressed and placed the mic next to some music I was playing. After recording an hour or so I placed the recorded files in Final Cut. The break between the 2 files was in the middle of a song and I can say the transition was completely seamless. There was no break or overlapping. I wonder if a firmware update fixed it.

This and your other videos on the RODE Wireless II have helped me feel comfortable enough to make my purchase.Thank you!! I am watching this video so I can set and forget my transmitters and receiver now. Thanks so much! This is my first microphone system, so I'm excited to see where this goes. My learning curve is nuts right now but I find your videos extremely helpful and they take a good bit of the fear out of not knowing what I am doing... yet.

Hi there! This was such a useful video. I’ve already applied all of these changes. I did have one question that Rode support wasn’t able to address when I reached out. Is there a way to manipulate the gain output to a laptop when the mic is connected via USB-C? It seems like the gain control on the receiver works for my recorder and camera but won’t affect what my laptop picks up directly. This is especially disappointing because the audio my laptop picks up from the mic by default is very low.

Hey hey LaloRacer1! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! At the time of this recording there was no way to raise the input level on my Mac computer. I didn't check if the latest firmware update added this function. Generally speaking if you are going into a laptop to use a mic and you are recording into something via software or zoom etc etc. In those programs you can raise the mic level higher while the system level is just set at a standard. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Great advice and thanks for sharing! My #1 complaint was dropped signals with my old wireless mics! Having piece of mind that I “should” be able to recover any drops is definitely a plus for the RGW2...I still need to play around with my new RGW2’s because on my other system it did allow for up to a 15db gain which helps due to my niche of tractors tools and trucks having the extra voice gain to overcome a lot of the background noise. So far I’m extremely happy with my purchase! ~Jon@SBYD!

Such a good point about compressed vs uncompressed - yes, it should only be a split second here and there. I suppose, however, the alternate POV is that you will need to do much less editing if you just drop the uncompressed audio into your timeline in your editor.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey The Building Sheriff! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I guess it could depend on how much post audio is done to the original recording into camera or recorder. If note much is done, the compressed sounds pretty similar to the camera and uncompressed recordings in my full review tests. The only thing I saw was that the signal to noise ratio between the two was about +2 post gain. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Great video...thank you. Any chance you can make a video with the best preset gain (low, med, high) settings for an action camera like the Insta360 One R, A GoPro or DJI Osmo Action? Keep up the great work...your now my go to Wireless Mic person.

Hey hey Time in the Outdoors! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! When it comes to most action cameras, they do their own auto audio gain settings so you'll not have great control over what it want's to do. That being said, -9db or -6db should be a good starting point since the RODE outputs a loud signal thats good for action cameras not trying to up its own gain too much. You can test -3db if you like and see if it sounds a little better, but otherwise -6 is a common starting spot for a system that doesn't let you set mic gain in the camera. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Great vid mate. Appreciate the time you have taken to create it. Can you advise me on how I can increase the output on one transmitter to match the second one. I seem to have an imbalance when recording. Cheers. Alex.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey 4motions adventures! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The transmitter don't inherently have its own mic level adjustments, the unit will adjust accordingly. The cheapest way is to make sure you're recording in stereo mode so that in editing you can raise the one transmitters volume. But if you are trying to do it on set and negate the post editing, you would want something like this: geni.us/aASbL (affiliate link) This preamp would still require you to make sure the RODE is set to stereo mode, from there you can adjust the audio levels of each transmitter from the preamp. At the very end there is a switch on the preamp that allows you to send out a Mono or Stereo signal to the camera. I personally would keep it on stereo so incase you do need to readjust later, you can. Here is a related video on what I mean by adjusting a stereo signal: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adOkes2DubewZas.html Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey again DokoGaTV, Mahalo! I haven't updated my firmware in a couple months, i'm not sure which version I'm on currently. I hope you were able to get an answer. Im not sure if i'm just making this up but I thought there was maybe a master re-format protocol of the system, kind of like re-installing the OS on a computer. If you haven't gotten an answer yet, maybe google around and see if this protocol exists. For some reason I felt there was a reformat sequence.

The thing is, as he mentioned in the video, is that if you first select merged mode in the settings in the application and then select safety channel. You can then any time you want deselect merged mode and go to split mode from your receiver. And when you go back to merged you will automatically have the safety channel.

Hey hey again The Macronical! That is very true about everything being compressed in the end! One of the most helpful videos I've seen in a while. When filming, I change the tone of my voice a lot, I go from normal tone to yelling, and with my curreny mic "Green Lion," the sound always gets muffled. Will this safety mode solve my problem? And how can I fine tune the db based on my voice? Thank you for your time
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 ай бұрын
The Safety channel can help on the camera side though it may not be where the problem lies. It could potentially be that your your Green Lion Mic capsule is not able to handle that much sound pressure from yelling, which can also cause distortion. Go ahead and try the safety track and then in your editor raise the volume of the safety track and see if its still muffles. If so, then theres a good chance its your microphone not able to handle it and you may need to get a higher end lavaliere that can. Check the scream test in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLVkbJB5yN3RgZs.html

@TLDR_filmmaker Thank you very much for your reply. You're right, I think the problem may be from the capsule that's not able to handle the sound pressure. I will watch the video that you sent me. Hopefully, I can find a mic that's able to adapt changing from low to high tone withput distorting🙏

Thank you for the details its really appreciated. Question though, is it necessary to have record set to (ON) if you are connected to your GO PRO? Or is the record option just a failsafe backup...... Thanks again...
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Kevin! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The recording option is just a failsafe backup incase something happens with your wireless signal or maybe your go-pro runs out of battery but someone is still talking. You will at least have the audio that you can use B-roll to cover with until you get the go-pro back up and running. For the most part, like I say in the video, you only lose 10 minutes of RODE GO battery live on the TX by keeping the internal recording on. Because it's so minimal of a difference, theres no real good reason to have this feature turned off. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Andrew! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! You're going to have to adjust it on the fly based on who's being mic'd up, and to a certain degree it'll depend on your camera. Hey hey Barry! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Your camera mic level settings is going to vary from camera to camera. Sony cameras don't like to use low mic settings because of potential distortion, panasonic cameras can be set lower and let the RODE do more of the heavy lifting with output. Your goal is to make sure your camera's sound bars are bouncing between -12db and -6db so you have room to work with it in post production. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey LegendaryOn99! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In general you should adjust the camera audio levels first. Yes, generally people will want to bump their camera level down first, however I found out that this is NOT the case for Sony Cameras. I detail it in this video here if you are a Sony shooter: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eM6Pmsl22KyrpHU.html If you're a Panasonic shooter, you can move the audio levels down. I'm not sure about Canon or BMPCC. I believe they are fine to go down as low as it can go. Sony is oddily not the case. But you'll want to test around to see what sounds good to you. Hope this helps! @TLDR_filmmaker Жыл бұрын
Hey hey again Budiono! In the newer firmwares your transmitter will have something called a "pad" option. Simply turn that on and that will lower your mic's sensitivity level. This only works for the build in microphone and not an external lav mic if I remember correctly. If you are using an external mic. The Sony is weird with how it handles louder noises. So you might actually need your RODE GO to be set to -30db. I know this will be very low on your Sony, but it will help it from clipping and you will need to raise the audio level in editing. As for your iphone and why it's peaking. This is something thats not easily figured out on the iphone as it has its own audio gain programming that can't be turn on or off.

The receiver does not record audio internally. Only the transmitters record audio internally when activated. The Receiver is meant to plug into your camera with the 3.5 or a external recorder.

Was wondering if you had some insight here. I had some issues editing the split channel audio in a multi-cam project with FCPX. For whatever reason, it wouldn't let me isolate the individual dual mono tracks when I had multiple camera angles. The only workaround was to switch to merged mode, where I couldn't even use a safety channel. Any ideas on how to work around this?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey James! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Hmm if you have created a multicam clip already and select the audio channels you wanted from the cameras source. I believe if you expand audio components on the multicam clip it should pop out all the audio sources you've selected (Left and Right channel) since the Multiclip is merging all of those into a dual mono already, I believe. Or you would have to double click and enter into the multiclip editor itself and I believe all your audio lanes should be there when you expand audio components. This is a good question and I may need to look into it more and create a tutorial video. It might be awhile as I have other projects to do but I will add it to my list of video ideas. Hopefully what I said here gets you closer to what you need to do. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey AM2PM! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! That definitely depends on how you film and what subjects you film. I generally prefer to do the safety channel just on the off chance that I may need to access that channel to safe a piece of a recording. In FCPX the dual mono setting is a quick click so it doesn't really affect the time of my workflow. But if you're finding that your just doing a talking head (of yourself) and you talk more or less the same volume all the time, then the safety track might not be a big deal as you've locked in audio gain settings. Hey hey Binh Vu! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I recently found out, at least to my ears, that when you have the Sony at +1 that there is some sort of limiter that Sony does that is set to around -9db or something. Because I always woundered why I would get these clip distortion noises even though I was far from hitting 0dB. When I placed the preamp to +3 I noticed that the sony limiter shifted to -3dB. I compensated my microphone for the added camera gain and I now get a much better range of audio that won't randomly clip just because I hit some sort of limiter that I can't turn off. I was wracking my brain over this one because my old Panasonic GH5 had great signal to noise ratio because I can push the sound all the way to -3db if I wanted and had the option to turn on and off the limiter. Sony looks like it has it's own limiter that you can't turn off and depending on what preamp level you're set at gives it different results. Hope this helps. Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey Jim! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! To connect it to an iPhone you will need to use this cable: geni.us/xAbin (affiliate link) when you have this connected to your receiver you will not need to sync any audio afterwards. Unless you are wanting to use the onboard recording incase your signal blips, this is heavily dependent on your editing software. You can either manually do it by matching your audio waveforms together. This is why on movies we CLAP after we hit the record button, so we can match the audio files later. I always clap 3 times so its easier to match if I do it manually. Otherwise a lot of programs now have "sync audio" features where the computer does it for you. Simply do a youtube search on your audio program on how to sync audio and you'll most likely find a video on how to do it. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey Robert! Thank you so much for checking out this video and being active with other commenters! The computer App is only there to activate optional features, you do not need it to set up every time you want to change something like "Gain level" and "Stereo/Mono" mode. Those are all done on the physical product itself. The App simple gives you more options should you want to use more options when you're out in the field. This video is just my recommendation so that you can set it once and forget it. No need to go back into the app to turn a option on or off, you'll be set no matter what. This video is a supplement to my large 45 minute review a couple weeks ago. That's the reason I don't mention much about anything else as this is assuming most have already began using the system or they saw my long review and know that an App exists to turn on option features. The Internal Recording drift problem is probably somewhat solved with them now going to 48khz instead of 44.1khz. Another good tip, when you're importing the files you'll notice that you lose all the date and time info. This is very useful if you have a lot of files to sync with video. What works is to stick to a naming convention that works like this: DOG GROOMER 220802 143452 01 talks about shampoo DOG GROOMER 220802 143704 02 showing the clippers DOG GROOMER 220803 092212 03 the next morning walkies SO you have the project, the date (Year Month Day) time (hour min sec) the number and the description. As you can see the third file is from the next morning. You'll find that this way all the audio files stay in the correct order, plus you can match up when your video file timestamp is with the audio file from the same time, before doing an auto sync (FCPX does this every time no prob.) This can really save a lot of headaches when you have 50 plus audio to video syncs to do, or when you have one big audio file and several video files to sync to it...

Hey hey again Andrew! I haven't updated to the most recent one just yet. But Pad is meant for you're you're trying to record audio at a rock concert or something where the sound is just booming. The Pad is different from just lowing the output gain to -30db, I believe it's actually make the mic capsule less sensitive so that the loud sounds don't distort it out. So essentially this is not necessary to turn on unless you are recording near a jet engine or something and only trying to get the jet engine sounds, needless to say your voice is not going to come through as well because of the pad. @TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Hey Kloketen! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! No, there is no way internally to adjust each mics level. Generally speaking based on my observation. RODE has an interesting algorithm for their AGC when you set the output dB. When you look at the sound bars, even if you are talking softly, it will boost the sound in a way to keep you in the green at the verge of yellow. I think the output dB is more for its max signal going into your recorder or camera. Because no matter how loud you yell, if you set it at lower dB, your recorder or camera won't go past a certain point. I think the only way you could really run into trouble with not having vol adjustments between the two TX is if one person literally whispers while the other one speaks boldly. Otherwise in a normal talking situation, the RODE AGC should do well in keep both leveled decently. If you really need individual channel control, the easiest way is to purchase something like this: geni.us/aASbL When you're in split mode you'll be able to adjust each mics individual volume going into your camera. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Chris! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In my opinion, the Standard internal recording compression is more than enough since the internal recording gain is adjusting in real time from the internal algorithm. If you are wanting to do a bunch of audio post editing, and I mean a bunch, then the uncompressed might be a better a choice. But if you're just doing maybe a little EQ sweetning and a little compression, the standard should be more than enough. That also being said, with uncompressed you get about 7 hours of recording if you are starting fresh with the internal storage. If you find that you're not really using 7 hours of internal recording for a wedding shoot, you could then just leave it at uncompressed for the heck of it. Yes, batch export was released in one of the more recent RODE central updates. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Shugg! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If you are using two transmitters, one for bride and one for groom, or whatever combination you may have. You should ALWAYS, in my opinion, use split. Because you want to make sure you can do any post audio work with either speaker incase one doesn't speak as loudly or if one mic is picking up other noises while the other is speaking. I talk briefly about the uses of "split channel" in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adOkes2DubewZas.html . As for whats a good gain level, a very general rule of thumb is to try and keep your recorder (or camera that is taking in the audio) and having their voices bounce between -12db and -6db (the visible marks on the sound bar on your camera.) You will adjust the RODE's Receiver output dB until their voices are near there. It's hard to change this on the fly, but the RODE Transmitter is also helping out and doing its thing on auto. Generally speaking -12 to -6db is where people are on average with the receivers output. Last but not least, as I say in this video, keep that internal recording on. Not only will it save you if you lose signal, but if it so happens you set up your receiver output wrong. The Transmitters recording is not affected by your output changes, it will have its own auto level recording that does quite well with regular speech. The only time it does not work is if someone deliberately screams into the transmitter. Hope this helps. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
There could be multiple reasons as it's hard for me to know what order or steps you've gone through. The obvious one is to make sure you turn on the internal recording feature through the Rode central app like I show in the video. There is now two versions of this feature. One requires you to make sure the receiver is on as well before it begins recording. The other is that the transmitter will recorder whenever it is turned on, it does not require the receiver to be turned on. Assuming you have these turned on and set, the recordings will appear the next time you plug the transmitter into the computer. There are random times where it will show no recordings for whatever reason and I simply just unplug and replug, the files will be there. The last bit is if you performed a firmware update, it will warn you that if you update the transmitter, depending on the update, it may need to erase the recordings. You of course have the options to negate the update and get the recordings you want before performing the update. These are the basic things you have to know when it comes to the internal recording, the main take away is that the internal recording feature must be turned on. It is not on by default when you bought the RODE GO. So if you had already recorded something a few days ago, nothing is recorded, and therefor it makes sense that you are not seeing anything in there at the moment. Hope this helps further helps as this pretty much covers everything.

In my opinion, it is not good to keep the units at 100% battery, as they use LiPo technology, so much like with our cell phones, the battery life is adversely influenced by keeping it either full or deeply discharged. So I would connect the charger when reaching red, and disconnect before 100% full.

I am curious if recording uncompressed 24-bit audio on your TX unit gives you any extra headroom to fix files that might have clipped on the TX before they have gone through the RX pre-amp. Anything that is already clipped when it hits the RX, won’t be able to brought back. Safety channel or no safety channel.

Hey hey again 2010SLP! Part of me thinks you won't necessarily have headroom persay, I'm coming at it with the idea of video files in compressed vs uncompressed. I think the Uncompressed probably gives you better manipulation in post of the audio thats not clipped instead of being able to recover a clipped audio like RAW video. Here's hoping RODE enters the 32bit float game if the RODE GO II hardware can handle it. Though my guess is not likely :(

Hello! I have a question. Often I have the subjects far away from the camera - say, someone in front of a half dozen cars. Talent will naturally try to project more in this case, and often the microphone itself ends up clipping. The receiver going into my audio recorder is well-managed, but the mic/transmitter itself maxes out (as shown on the receiver screen). Is this something you run into with your set? Any settings to help mitigate this, or should I just try to move the mic farther away?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Boter! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! In general the RODE does do well with people who speak loudly, the TX will adjust to make sure it doesn't clip out at the mic level. But if this person is constantly really going at it or has that natural booming voice. In a recent Firmware update there was feature you could activate on the TX called "pad" or "padding" (I think). This lowers the mics sensitivity for loud noises, I can't remember how much -dB it pads, but this should help the TX mic not clip out. However if you are using a lavalier mic, I'm not entirely sure how this will work with the external lavalier mic. In theory I feel it should still work and it is not limited to just the RODE's built in microphone. Each Lav is different in how it handles boom sounds. I show this in my RODE GO Lavs comparison video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLVkbJB5yN3RgZs.html Assuming the "pad" feature is all good, from here you will have to see if the output of the RX is enough to compensate for the pad and/or if your audio recorder can add some more gain without raising too much noise floor sounds. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker Thank you for the detailed response! Yeah, it's a difference between "projecting" and "shouting", and someone used to doing car commercials definitely shouts. I enabled "pad" on one of the transmitters, and sure enough the level was noticeably lower on the receiver, so I've gone ahead and enabled pad on all of the transmitters - I'd much rather worry about the noise floor than clipped audio! Thanks again :)

Hey hey MIMCK Media! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! You're not missing anything, the dB adjustment is only for the RX to Camera. The TX records its own AGC signal. It's most likely the actual signal it detects and sends wirelessly to the RX that then you adjust for camera or external recorder. For the most part the internal recording does a good job not clipping out expect for really sudden moments. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

I've actually had some file corruptions with recording set to "always", in "merged" mode. Thankfully, I was recording in uncompressed so only a couple 30 min. chunks were corrupt. Just one reason to record in uncompressed. It would be nice to have way more control, like setting the compressed recording to 30 min. limits as well if you wanted to have a sense of securing your audio recordings a bit better. Also, another criticism of the app is that you can't batch export more than one 30-min. uncompressed clip at a time. And the "save to" window doesn't even remember where you exported to last so you have to re-navigate to your desired folder for every 30 min. clip. Minor, first world annoyances for sure, but still an issue that I'm surprised to see in a 2021 piece of software. I really am rooting for Rode and the Go2, but the Go2 + Central app definitely still feels a bit undercooked. As TLDR has predicted, I'm also hoping for a Rode Wireless "Pro" version with longer battery life, longer record time, threaded/locking 3.5mm jack, and actual control over the internal recording. To Rode's credit, it's the only lav device in the U.S. that can record and transmit at the same time, and that really is super great (stupid, selfish patent holders).

Hey hey Andrew! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Hmm, that is interesting about the corruptions. Is this with the newest firmware on the transmitters? I agree that the software is a bit undercooked, but I'm also going to give RODE a slight break because I have a feeling this is the first time they've probably hired in software developers. They do seem very active with its development so I can only assume it will become fully fleshed out sooner than later as we give them ideas what they need to do. I'm not sure if this is still there, someone had found that the uncompressed will cut out a couple frames of audio when it transitions to the next 30min recording. Totally agree that RODE actually figured out a way to get around the stupid US patent that wasn't doing anything for just about every filmmaker out here. Lets see how RODE continues to fuse their App processings to give us even more options further down the line! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@@TLDR_filmmaker Yes, all the devices and app are updated. I contacted Rode and they said it was a known issue and recommended a factory reset. It wasn't all the clips from that day, so I believe something was triggering the corruption, like talent accidentally unplugging the lav mics from the receivers perhaps, who knows. But I was able to extract the .UGG files even if there's no way of converting them without the Rode Central app, so Rode offered to convert the files for me, which I sent to them and I'm awaiting them to do so. And yeah, it would be great if at least the patent holders actually made something for us to use. Thanks TLDR!

Hey hey Blair! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The first part is, can you connect the RODE to your DVX200? Yes, a simple XLR to 3.5mm with no phantom power abilities will do the trick. Here is what one looks lieks geni.us/akxeZC (affiliate link) However will they sync up perfectly? No, I show this in my major review in the latency test: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abp_n8ej25_NdXk.html This reason for this is because it is wireless, which means there is always more latency than a hardwire audio cable. So when you go into editing, you will hear a echo between the two mic sources. This can be fixed of course in the editing phase where you can offset the RODE to match the wired shotgun mic. This is done differently depending on what video editor you are using, but it can be done. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

It completely depends on your camera as well as how loud your sound source is that you're trying to capture. Rule of thumb is to keep your camera mic level as low as possible and adjust the receiver so that your voice is around the -12db area on the sound bar. Your best starting point is to try anywhere from 12db to 3db on the RODE if you do not have access to soundbars on your camera or camera mic level adjustments.

I see you're planning to do an update at some point (probably not this year now...) but, in the meantime is there any chance you could add a comment in the video description to mention the fact that newer versions of the transmitter firmware now won't let you select compressed format if you select always record. It took me a while to work out why my compression settings kept changing when trying to use your suggested settings. (...and even longer to find out that it was actually supposed to do that!) Also, do you have any preference between the always recording mode and the new "backup" mode which only records when connected to the transmitter and, oddly, does allow uncompressed recording. Personally, other than the edge case where you forget to charge or turn on the receiver, I can't see a good reason to use "always record" with it's inherent privacy issues and shorter record time.

Quick question : When I'm using merged mode, should I be using both transmitters for the recording? Lets say its just me anf I want to do a one person voiceover.... Will I use BOTH transmitters AND have merged mode turned on? What about the safety mode... Will I need both transmitters for that too? Or can I use safety with just one transmitter?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hey FPV FLYER! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If you have two transmitters going, merge mode will simply just have both speakers coming out of both stereo channels (like normal videos). Safety Channel will have the LEFT channel at regular volume and the RIGHT will be the safety should something gets too loud. The Safety is meant for you to work on in editing should something clip out, and when you're done editing you will tell the editor to make the audio track "merged" so that it sounds like a normal video. This is why I suggest when you have two transmitters going you should learn how to work with "Split" mode because you want to have control of each persons voice in the edit and then make it a "merged" audio when you export your video. If someone on one transmitter is making a bunch of noise, you can mute them while the other is talking. If you filmed it in "merged" mode, you won't have any ability to mute them because their audio is merged forever. I cover this topic very lightly in this video, but the concept is the same when you work with split stereo 2ch audio. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adOkes2DubewZas.html Pretty much any video editor can do this except for maybe iMovie? I'm not sure. The free Davinci Resolve editor can do it for sure. Lastly if you only have one transmitter going. In this case you can use either Safety or Merge. Again, the safety will just have one channel that is at a lower volume incase you scream. So you'll fix that in editing and merge it when you render out your video. Or you can just leave the RX in "merge" mode so that you get normal video audio. Hope this makes sense and helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Djayrazor! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! You would activate Merge Mode on the RX. However if you are using the safety channel feature there will be an extra step in editing that you'd have to do. I talk about it briefly here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adOkes2DubewZas.html Essentially you're telling the audio to take the left channel and dual mono it out so that you can hear it on both stereo channels. It's an extra step, but a good step to learn as you begin working with audio. If you don't want to deal with this at all, then simply turn off safety channel in the app, that way when you go into "merge" mode, you'll hear your voice out of both stereo channels. I don't seem to be able to switch from uncompressed to compressed in the transmitter... Re the uncompressed, the pro way is to use the uncompressed audio and resync it to the video from the camera using the camera audio from the transmitted rode audio. The reason being that you get ALL the audio including the outtakes when the talent speaks but the camera is not running, very useful for all kinds of reasons (not to mention hearing the things they say about you when they wander off with the mic still attached...) So, if you are using the internal recording you have no issues with wireless dropouts, no loss of quality by going through Digital to wireless in the transmitter, wireless to Digital in the receiver and Digital to ANALOG (oh no!) in the receiver to go through the minijack lead, and finally analog to digital into the camera through less than optimal A to D amps (oh no again!) and finally into your video file in the camera... That's a lot to go wrong and degrade the signal. I think of the camera audio from the receiver as the backup and reference for sync, and the internal audio as the master. Obvs for speed and if audio is not so important, the pre synced audio will work, but for critical documentary recording, the above method PLUS the addition of a quality shotgun mic into a separate audio recorder is the way to go. MKE600 into H4n is pretty good. TL:DR Use internal recording plus secondary audio recording with a shotgun for the best results.

Hey hey Sam! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I unfortunately do not have a Ninja V so I do not know how good the preamps are when recording audio to it. I'm also not sure if the Ninja V has a audio delay setting when you are using the Ninja's mic/line port. The reason I say this is because there is always a slight lag between the camera and HDMI port. So if you were to record this way you may have to re-align the audio track in editing. Depending on your application, it may be better to just have the RODE be connected to the Sony and let both video and audio signals go to the Ninja at the same time through the HDMI port.
