Are blended family conflicts unavoidable? Naja Hall joins Laterras to offer hope in the storm. After detailing how she fell in love fast with a divorced dad of three, Naja unpacks the mental health impacts and anxiety triggering events stemming from high conflict with her husband's ex. From boundary setting tips to a revelatory distinction between child-centered marriages and divorces, Naja provides vulnerable testimony and hard-won wisdom so others might walk an easier path. Ultimately, Naja issues a gentle challenge-can we break cycles of generational trauma and instead choose generational healing? The possibility of blossoming in the ashes exists, but we must commit to doing the work.

That perspective touched my soul.... I don't think I'd use the word "Bully" Bullies truly don't care about you could see you dead...at least most Mom's do love their kids and usually it's fear that can cause us to gain control in not the best ways...when you know better you do better most I would like to think do the best that they know how? Not trying to minimize people that are truly abusive to their own kids😭

People need to get along for the kids. My daughter's father ex-fiancé used to go to the parent teacher conferences I couldn't make it to. When he chose to be a deadbeat, she and I still maintained the friendship we developed. She is now married to someone else with kids and we are the best of friends. We are over 20 years in. She loved my child so my family and I welcomed her with open arms. Anything for the sake of the kid..

I'm not in a blended family situation, thank God! I'm just compelled to comment because it's nice to hear about another successful marriage that started from Plenty of Fish (POF). I too met my husband on POF😊, both celibate before marriage, dated daily for a month, moved in together, and married after 3 months. We have 2 beautiful kids and now married for the best 9 years of my life. I literally manifested my husband while in an unhappy relationship. God is AMAZING 👏🏾

I am the product of a blended family, and I can see WHY my parents weren't together. I am grateful for them both and how they tried to navigate it. As an adult now I never wanted a blended family cause it is stressful on the kids unbeknownst especially when other siblings have different fathers/mothers. The jealousy my sister had towards me because her father was absent and mine was present is a damn Lifetime movie. I am mature and open enough to accept having a blended family but currently being single with no kids and marrying a man with kids/co-parenting will be a major adjustment for me. I truly enjoyed this episode and truly looking forward to others on blended families.

Now, this is the conversation the church should be having in the midst of "Vow of Celibacy." While you have promised to keep yourself, what are you going to talk about when you come into the company of a suitor? How crazy are you, your momma, your daddy, step momma and so on? If we make a person and we break, how will we behave in pursuit of raising this person. So important.

I grew up watching an Uncle and Aunt embracing my Uncle ex. They collectively decided to put their children needs ahead of their own interests and hurts. It was very interesting to watch. The kids had a lot of issues! Particularly the children who had come from the divided household. Blaming, measuring how their father was treating his younger children by my Aunt with how they were treated! It was a potential hot mess! But, if you watched the three adults, in how they got along. How they acted as mediators and buffers for each other’s! How they laughed together and showed all the children love! Hearing them out and mostly important validating their feelings and beliefs! All of that and more that I can’t list right now! Doing it without attitude and with long suffering and tribulations! Today, all of the kids get along with one another and love my aunt! They thank God for sending her to their father and their life! The adults have to be the adults and validation goes a long ways!

If there were ever an episode that I wanted to forward along, this is THE ONE. Blended families are extremely tough to navigate, especially when the ex has unresolved bitterness or feelings involved. Ultimately, the goal is to raise children who are well supported and well loved. We have to be willing to leave our egos and adult issues out of the equation for the sake of the children. Unfortunately, a lot of people lack the wisdom and emotional maturity required to do so.

This episode so so relatable. We were a blended family. My ex hubby and I were married for almost 23 years. His ex-wife, mother, and sister made my life a living hell until I got fed up and put my foot down. The only reason I had to was because he wouldn’t. They would come to our home, my parents home, or the kids school with drama and confusion. Then the children would fight because of what was going on. It was horrible, but I fell back on the principles I was raised on and got my house in order. He and I divorced and did not get along at first due to years of infidelity on his part. Our oldest daughter sat us down on behalf of her siblings and said y’all need to get it together one way or another because we will not pick sides or separate events because you two cannot coexist. Today we are really good friends because our children and grandchildren were more important than our inability to get along. I made it my purpose to regardless of what happened. When we think of the greater good, you will always find grace to give….great episode as always Laterras ❤❤❤

Numbers 6:24-25. I’m so grateful you didn’t miss God because he had kids, like you said, he brought you into your purpose. God doesn’t make any mistakes. When the angel came to tell Mary she was highly favored and would conceive Jesus, her circumstances surrounding his birth didn’t look or feel favorable in the natural. Some things MUST be spiritually discerned. ❤

For those of you who do not yet have children, normalize dating and marrying people who do not have children. "No children" was always a top requirement and something of which I was unwilling to compromise. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have managed to blend families quite beautifully. I just haven't met any. And as a result, I was thoroughly uninterested in any ready-made families or the chaos/confusion that often comes with the territory. If you don't have to walk this walk--DON'T.

Completely agree! We live in a culture where celebrities start trends and make up words such as "blended", "co-parent ", and the latest one " bonus mom/dad". These words assume both parties have the same values, morals, habits, priorities, faith which are the foundation of a child's upbringing. The words stepchild, stepmom, stepdad are already defined. If all parties had the same mentality they wouldn't be divorced. There is no blending when the family unit is broken. Co-parenting is an illusion. Bonus mom/dad implies that the family came as a set. The best thing we can do is respect each others space.

Hi. It would be awesome to see you do a series with a guy who messed up and are genuinely sorry. Share what he did wrong and what he would do if he could get a second chance to prove his love and will make it right. How he has learned from his mistake. How he has matured and wants a second chance at the love he lost. Maybe they broke up or divorced but want her back. Then, contact her to see if she is willing and bring her on to surprise him on the show. Then, let both share where they fell and what they would do differently. Everyone loves a happy ending. Call it "There's No Love Lost, God Can't Restore."

@@janicetaylor1272 but you just proved her point…in this case your ex hadn't moved on and still had access to you, and you eventually you had to set boundaries, which means it caused issues in some way and that is what the episode was about. Ex spouses and partners who do not set boundaries are asking for trouble. The new person coming behind your ex should not have to deal with all of that.

I just love that you are covering this topic. My parents never found healing with their past and it's impossible for them to put their feelings aside despite them both having new partners. I believe that parents that don't take their relationship or the possibility of a future relationship off of the table, emotions supersede all logic for their kids. I have fought my mom about guest lists for my wedding, graduations, holiday gatherings, and loyalty. I have fought my dad over house guests, his partner and her kids, and his lack of effort to acknowledge how he's contributed and still contributes to toxic interactions and inappropriate behaviors. Heal for the sake of your kids. This foolishness has made it down to my kids. Grandma and grandpa will never support them in a unified capacity.

Laterals R. Whitfield, Naja Hall is awesome and she rocked your podcast. Everything she said was true from the Ex-spouses inspecting the new home for what they didn’t get, to the police assistance to meeting the other spouse’s children. Blending families is a unique ministry all to itself. Counseling should be required as well as continued therapy for either spouse or minor child involved in the new combined family. Additional family members: grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, church members and friends should be extended the grace of the same counseling to help cultivate beautiful marriages and families. There is no law against family members and their comments but as Christians ( full time Christians) WE should hold ourselves accountable for what we say and do ( Life and death is in the power of the tongue, Proverbs 18:21). It is very important that we align our thoughts, comments, and actions with the Word of God. Children watch our everyday actions and even when we are not paying attention or we think our comments or actions are “no big deal” we are still in training mode of raising our children. No need to say, “Camera, lights, action”. The training starts as soon as we awake each morning.

This is really really good. "We can help our children avoid trauma by us just been adults". When we go through situations, take accountability and heal, then the children involved are better off. Two healthy individuals should be able to agree on how they can co-parent their children. And yes do a thorough research on people if possible before marriage, so you don't see wonders😀. Great episode.

I wonder why Christians refer to the zodiac. Why? To believe in the power and authority of astrology, is against biblical wisdom. Why reduce your human personality, moods and one's whole being to a horoscope? Deuteronomy 4:19 And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. Deuteronomy 18 also speaks on such practices..... Wanted to put that out there first, now that it's off my chest.... what topic are we on again 🙈

I am in a blended family situation too and as the step parent coming in, this conversation was helpful in letting me know that I have been handling things right. I have been preaching boundaries with his ex since the beginning and have required him to make adjustments for the betterment of all of us involved in the situation. Period. The only thing she didn't talk about was where their family is now 2 years after that incident. How are things going?

This Episode was everything ! I can personally relate bc my son is 8 and I coparent and it hasn’t always been as peaceful and unproblematic as it is now and for that I say Thank you God! I remember getting on my knees and praying on the floor in my closet…I prayed for peace , respect and communication in my coparenting and I prayed my son’s father would find a wife(he is married now)bc I did not want a revolving door of women around my son ! God is truly amazing ! We have to be willing to do our part and we have to trust God and know he will handle the rest ! I’ll never forget someone told me God will change you or he will change the situation and before he changed the situation he changed me and changed my heart ! I had to heal because I was truly angry and bitter and once I went back to therapy and started working on me..God turned the situation around and for that I am forever thankful because now we can celebrate my son’s birthday in the same place , go to school events and go to sports events together as family unit for my son ! We have to put our personal feelings aside and do what is best for our children ! Our babies deserve it!

In a perfect world, the mother and father would be in a good and healed space before new people are brought into the dynamic. That would help a lot. But even when they are, yes, other partners are normally agitators on this already sensitive situation. Well meaning people (like Naja) may not fully know the history or personalities. It's the trickiest of situations. I appreciate her sharing!!

There are so many gems in this conversation. Dating - Thanks for sharing your information. We need to ask more questions as we get to know each other before marriage. Explore the metal health within yourself and the other person. Don’t lead with your loins. Parenting and custody - It’s incredible that a woman can get a felony for caring for and protecting their children, but the other parent can disappear randomly with no recourse (in some cases). I experienced the disappearance of my ex often. The only time he would show up was if I started dating. He would randomly show up in the restaurant. He was never consistent in their lives. Lack of nurturing - As a woman raised children after divorce, it was hard raising children and explaining the absence of their father. They are still healing from this absence today. These conversations are so important and I appreciate the space to share these tough conversations.
