In this video we take a look at how to set up a basic waypoint mission in INAV. I'm using version 6.1.1. so some of the options may not be available on older version. We look at:
- The mode you need to fly a waypoint mission
- What settings are available on the Advanced Tuning page
- How to set up a basic mission in Mission Control
- Flying the mission
This should give you all the information you need to know to setup and fly your first INAV mission.
NOTE: Please do not fly a mission before making sure that your aircraft is fully set up and correctly tuned. You should be 100% confident that the aircraft can fly safely and reliably in both standard and navigational flight modes. For example, if RTH is not smooth and predictable. Do not fly a mission until is it setup and tuned correctly, so that it is.

Thanks for the video. Seeing the Mission Elevation Profile was very useful. I wasn't aware that was there. You mentioned the drawback of using "Load waypoint on boot". It will prevent you from arming, if the first WP is too far and you would need to use the stick command to unload the mission before you can arm. Consider the drawback of NOT using the option. You've taken off (without loading the mission). If you enable WP mode without a mission loaded, iNav goes into RTH mode. You can exit RTH by turning off WP mode, but you have no way of loading the mission while you are flying. You have to land; use the stick command to load the mission and take off again before you can fly the mission. To me, the correct time to enforce the "distance to first waypoint" should be when you enable WP mode, not when you are trying to arm.
@MrD
@MrD 11 ай бұрын
I think the usefulness of auto load depends on how often you fly missions. If it’s all the time, then it’s definitely useful. If it’s rare thing, then loading a mission all the time could be a pain. Especially if the mission is outside the safe distance and you have to unload the mission before you can fly. I see both sides with the safe distance. Ultimately, I think 1.5km for the first waypoint is a fair compromise.

Thanks this is a useful update. I think 1 programming event feature that will be most practical is aborting a mission and executing RTH when the battery is capacity is lower than a minimum threshold, and (this may be tricky) if possible also on the condition that any of the next waypoints are further from home than the current position. That's especially important if the mission may continue out of radio range (there is a inav setting for that).
@MrD
@MrD 11 ай бұрын
That should be possible with the programming framework. But, you can set up estimated flight time and distance. I’ve not looked in to this a great deal. But the setup is: - on the configuration page, change the battery capacity from mAh to Wh, and enter the correct details for your pack. - on the advanced tuning page, there are settings related to this. Off the top of my head, it has stuff like Watts for cruise and some other settings that you’ll also need to set - you’ll also need a well calibrated current sensor and voltage sensor Once that’s all set up. The flight time and distance OSD elements should work. I’m not sure if those values are available in programming. But if they are, they’d be the best values to use for the return point. If they’re not in programming, I may well add them.

It would be awesome if you could just drag the points on the mission elevation profile graph to set the altitudes for each waypoint.

Thanks Darren I've been waiting for this video, were I fly its all mountains in every direction, so if I use the sea level setting and at takeoff location is 1800ft above sea level and altitude is set to 300ft but along the mission I'm crossing mountains that are 2500ft to 2800ft above sea level will plane maintain the 300ft automatically or will it be at 300feet above the launch site? I don't want to fly into one of these mountains lol. Thanks again for all you do

Thanks for a brilliant overview! A future look at advanced features would certainly be welcome as well. One question: Is it safe to specify negative WP altitudes in sloping terrain, or could negative values confuse the system? Negative values would be more handy than using sea level reference for low terrain missions, and they seem to work OK in Mission Control, but I never dared try for real.
@MrD
@MrD 11 ай бұрын
Thanks 👍🏻 With regards to the negative values. I really don’t know. I guess the best way to find out is set up a mission with negative values and try it in HITL. No risk involved then.

the NAV WP mode is used like any other navigation modes. When you want to start flying the mission, you switch to the WP mode. The stick commands are to load the mission before you arm the aircraft.

I’m on a Mac, but have access to a PC. Is there a mission planner for inav that allows for pre drawn missions? For instance you want to do a mapping mission. I’m thinking a shape you drag and drop on the map that has the amount of passes you want and the mission is shaped like a rectangle, but you can drag the corners to re-shape the mission or add points to change the shape. Once the mission is correct, a file can be created that can be uploaded to the FC or it can be directly loaded from the software.

There’s not really enough information here to say what’s going on. Did you enable auto load mission? If not, did you load the mission with stick commands? If the mission is successfully loaded, is there a system message saying the first waypoint is too far away?
