Hi I'm from South Africa and my 10 year old child had more than one condition so we had to take him off of risperdal. Then we tried him on ritalin but he developed seizures and then serious tics. We have him see and integrative doctor who specializes in autism and now he's on a whole bunch of supplements including simple spectrum and this seems to be working nicely. Also the exercise is a brilliant idea. We also use a small indoor trampoline for him. And most importantly, our faith in Jesus, we pray with him.

Love you guys! It is a journey, for sure! With our son who has ADHD, it took years and years to finally find something that was right for him. We had similar experiences where his meds were making him more angry and more irritable. We found that stimulants were not the answer. We went for a period of time without meds. But now we have found a non-stimulant that works pretty good and it doesn’t kill his appetite and he isn’t irritable on it! I know every child and every situation is different, but this was just my experience. It’s important not to judge anyone who is or is not medicating their child. But you guys are amazing parents and you are doing an awesome job!

Yeah we’re ADHD and autistic too. They recommend strattera for people on the spectrum since we are very sensitive to stimulants due to our autism. (I am on strattera) My son is 7 and has both autism and adhd, and I have been very strict about not having him on any meds for his adhd due to his autism.

It is so sweet to see Ezra so happy walking with you. Makes my heart smile! My 4 yo grandson is level 2 on the spectrum. He has some words but does not communicate. He just started ABA about a month or so ago and his parents are seeing some regression in behavior. More meltdowns and not sleeping through the night anymore. The therapist could not offer any explanation 😕. Hopefully they will see some progress soon. Has this been your experience?

As a parents it’s hard to make decisions about meds😢 I was also struggled but I end up not give meds as my son has focus for learning once we get his attention and he is sensory seeker that’s make it hard to focus for long time , and my son is hyper too no meds I just let him to enjoy and be himself, but it’s depend if he not pay attention much and affect his life then medication is another option because we want they learn and be happy as well ❤ It’s my experience only . Also it’s not easy if you have another kids too 😢 I pray God give all us patients and strength

You are wonderful parents, using meds or not is a very hard thing to decided. Ezra certainly enjoyed the running which is good for him and going to give you lots of exercise, he looked so much happier much more relaxed and his vocal noises sounded happier as well, I loved the way he took your hands and so much enjoyed running with you, but could you keep up that level of energy all the time. I get the feeling you don’t want to medicate him, and that would be my approach to, but maybe there are times when it helps. It’s only you as his parents that can decide along with the help and support of your doctors. It’s clear that Ezra needs help to channel his energy and the running really helped. Does he like jumping ? What about a bouncy trampoline or something. When I worked with special needs adults back in the 80s the group I worked in was for adults who where also hyperactive. Every day we had a 1 hour slot on a huge adult equivalent bouncy castle, which we had in the department gym, it was great fun for all and It helped burn off the energy. And like the running made it easier for our charges to focus afterwards. Maybe if Ezra enjoyed that king of activity as well as running it would be something that you could have in the home, in addition to running, he could possible go on it by himself with a little supervision ?
@7Aheadfamily

Very great thoughts! Thank you so much for sharing ❤️. Yes, Ezra does love going to the bounce trampoline place, and Adam and Benson take him when they go often. We also have a trampoline outback as well which he does enjoy for a little bit. Yeah, it is definitely challenging to find a way to burn off all that energy naturally. 😊 we will be in great condition for a triathletes or some thing if we can keep it up. 😊

My son was like Ezra, He is 42 now and on meds. He didn't take anything until he turned 22. Parents know best for their child. My son was very difficult to raise and keep safe. He cried all the time, and bit things. We learned to live with this. He is too subdued now. I feel I made the right choice for us, to let him live his childhood free from meds. But I only had 3 kids. You just keep the faith, you are doing a great job!

Please consider putting captions on everything your children watch and on their tablets-and a screen reader and apps that read to them and highlight the words etc.Many Autistics have co occurring Auditory processing disorder (APD)and NEED to SEE language with a visual to CLARIFY meaning and to support comprehension.It’s well documented it helps children to read but is vital for Autistic children because of the APD-it doesn’t matter if they can’t yet do alphabet or speak. My son had his own iPad at age 3 and taught himself to read this way and also via a Google home..he would ask it to spell out words on repeat (as short term memory is also affected with APD ) and phonics are often a no go..whole word approach instead.

Meds vs No Meds: Everyone has to do what works best for them. For Epilepsy-Meds for sure. ADHD-Debatable. Furthermore, a lot of remedy’s that don’t require medication. For example; Tea is one of them because it can help you focus and calm down and good for you. Also a lot of over the counter. (Omega 3s-brain boost)

I’ll start by saying that it’s not a question to anyone but you, the family, if the meds are right or not. Saying this out of personal experience with ADHD and experience working with children with ADHD. That being said, it might be that what he is currently prescribed is not right for him. If you are hanging between yes or no, I’d recommend not only talking to the provider about a change in the given medication, but can also say that different people find acupuncture, Feldenkrais, hydrotherapy, massage therapy (for sensory), etc extremely helpful, and of course sports (including running, crawling, climbing, etc). We are all different, so what might work for one may not work for another, but those are all well worth trying if you can afford it, alongside meds or in place of meds. I can say that with the existing options these days, it might take some trial before finding the right med. you are wonderful parents, and you have amazing children. First time commenting here, so wanted to add it! Thanks for sharing glimpses of your family life. You are a true inspiration.

I've been on multiple ADHD meds throughout my life. I'm on Vyvanse right now which is working decently. One thing I've noticed is when I take my meds, I'm laser focused on every task I do, and I don't stim very much. I can also sit down and still for longer and I'm more patient, but because of my meds (and Crohn's) I go multiple days without eating a single thing, and when I do eat it's something very small like a piece of fruit, or yogurt. I still feel hungry, but when I try to eat I feel really sick, or I just have no motivation to eat. I also seem really calm and sad, even though I'm not sad, I'm just focused. When I don't take my ADHD meds I eat at least one meal a day, and I seem hyper and happy, but I can't focus enough to start and complete daily tasks. I get hyper and I stim 24/7, and when I try to sit down and stay still, I go into sensory overload, but I also can't stop stimming and moving in a way that resembles tics in the sense that I can't control my body movements. I also have meltdowns more often. My doctor did a trial where I went a month without my ADHD meds to see if that was the cause of the uncontrollable movements, but it's just cause I have severe ADHD, and after taking my meds for a while, I basically forget how to self regulate cause I'm not used to the feels. Some parts of taking my medicine is really beneficial, but there's some parts that I definitely hate. One thing that helped me and could help Ezra is a medication that increases appetite. I don't take them anymore cause the side effects of one of my other meds is increased appetite, and even though I don't have that side effect, it could increase my hunger too much.

I appreciate your comments so much, because I feel like you're speaking for Ezra, in some ways. I see that a lot of what you just explained is happening to Ezra. @@7Aheadfamily I crash at the end, and when I crash, I lose all the motivation I had before, and I feel tired. The worst part is when it wears off while I'm in the middle of doing something, and I basically abandon that project because of the lack of motivation. Also if I go the day without eating when I crash I feel sick for the first few hours. I also do a lot of very repetitive stims, like rocking back and forth for multiple hours. That one is a stim that doesn't take a lot of energy, so it's a good one when I crash. Maybe when you notice his medicine wears off, you can distract him with an activity that doesn't take a lot of effort like watching a show he likes, and let him play with his cords and wrappers.
@blakeexaviar9370

@@7Aheadfamily I have a feeling that he might feel angry, cause of the loss of motivation, and because of the strong urge to constantly stim , which is it's mostly uncomfortable because if a person on the spectrum tries not to stim , it makes the urge stronger, but if they're on ADHD meds then that crash will make them tired and restless at the same time, so the uncontrollable urge to stim and being tired causes frustration and anger.

One idea you might try with Ezra when it comes to toilet training. (I seem to remember hearing that Ezra was somewhat trained during kindergarten so at least in theory he can do it.): This is something I remember my mother doing with me mostly around age four or five (give or take). From what I recall I didn’t really make much progress from sitting on the potty chair or toilet when I was little (even around age three-and-a-half or four) because I didn’t really know what to do yet (let alone how to do it). What my mother would do with me was to have me sit on her lap fully clothed (but with underwear on instead of a diaper) and wait for me to “go”. When I did my mother would say something along the lines of, “Look Tommy, you’re going pee-pee!” (and point to the relevant area if I was wetting) or say something like, “Look Tommy you’re going poo-poo!” if I was pooping. In this fashion I associated the words with the corresponding function. You could maybe try something like this with Ezra once or twice a day and see if you get any results. The first time I remember my mother doing this technique with me was at age three-and-a-half on a trip to Nantucket. I was in Pampers full-time on that trip with the exception of bath time and some time on my mother’s lap outside. I didn’t use the toilet or any potty chairs on that trip but I started to become more aware of what my body was doing (and what certain toilet-training-related words meant). One time that my mother pointed out what was happening (without any commentary or judgement) was during one of my baths in Nantucket. Therefore sitting on a lap is not the only place where this technique can be practiced. You can also combine this with having Ezra sit on the toilet after meals and snacks and see if you get any results that way. If Ezra “goes” you can point out what he is doing (and afterward what he did) and give him some praise and some candy or some other small reward. It looks like Simon has made a lot of progress with his training (aside from an occasional accident here and there). I wonder if this progress might be (at least in part) a function of doing something similar to what I described here with Simon some time recently.
@7Aheadfamily
@7Aheadfamily 9 ай бұрын
That is a great idea. Simon was honestly very easy to potty train. He had a few accidents but hates being wet, so he goes in the potty, I has very few accidents, usually just in the car, when he feel he doesn’t have a choice. Ezra will hold it until he can get alone in the closet or behind a chair, so we’ve been trying to put him on the potty regularly, and try to give him some privacy too. It has been a challenge. I really appreciate your ideas. They are really insightful.

@@7Aheadfamily I actually thought about asking in my question above whether Ezra hides when he needs to poop but I initially decided not to because I thought it might be too intrusive to ask about. Out of curiosity how long has Ezra been hiding before “doing his thing” (as it were)? I have heard that most kids start hiding before doing this somewhere in the two to three year age range. The fact that he is hiding is actually a pretty significant sign of toilet training readiness. It also means (as long as he is not being punished for accidents) that his ability to feel embarrassed is beginning to develop. Based on this I have to say that while his language skills don’t seem to be coming along all that much just yet that his social skills seem to be coming along a bit. In fact, my own ability to feel embarrassed didn’t begin to kick in until I was in third grade (around age nine). That puts this aspect of Ezra’s social development a bit ahead of where I was at that age. Also my parents recently confirmed (during a phone conversation) that while my language abilities were fairly normal (especially by about third or fourth grade) that my social skills were very basic for someone my age all the way through grade school and for a bit longer. For example, while I was toilet training accidents never embarrassed me and my sister and mother have both confirmed that I did not hide at any point during this process (unlike an average “neurotypical” child). Like me, my sister is also on the spectrum but she actually started hiding before “doing her thing” at about the normal age (from what I have been told). In other words her social skills were pretty consistently ahead of mine (including having more friends during her school years than I had). She has what is currently considered to be level one/mild autism. (I have what is called either Right Hemisphere Syndrome or Right Hemisphere Deficit Syndrome (depending on the source). Some years ago I read an article about it online titled “Asperger’s by Another Name”.) In addition, my sister started reading books around age two and started understanding some of them a bit later. She also remembers dates very well and hardly ever forgets when anyone’s birthday is. She is also four years older than I am which may have given her an edge in some areas. Like Simon, though, I usually did not like being wet. It was not just wetness from accidents or spilled drinks that I didn’t like it was wetness in general (with the exception of baths and showers (I usually enjoyed those)). I think it was pretty much that along with having sensitive skin that explains why I toilet trained at all. In college when I took Sociology 101:General Sociology (back in the 1990s) I heard (during one of the professor’s lectures) about the M&M method that I referenced in an earlier comment. I remember this was in connection with a lecture about classical conditioning vs. operant conditioning. The lecture mentioned the importance of getting results with a reward every time (or close to it) initially and then randomizing and gradually phasing out a reward until one is no longer needed. He illustrated this concept by mentioning that our parents most likely used M&Ms during our toilet training (My mother was one of the few who did not because she was unfamiliar with the technique.) and then said something along the lines of, “Show of hands, do any of you still need M&Ms?” and in this class of as at least thirty or forty students not a single hand went up. The professor followed this up by mentioning the role of embarrassment in the process of toilet training (Specifically how rare it is to see kindergarten students in diapers (in the absence of incontinence or any developmental conditions that would account for it)). I remember after thinking back on this lecture (later that day) being surprised to learn that for most people toilet training is more motivated by social factors than by more simple considerations such as itching and rashes. I didn’t realize until then just how unusual my own toilet training experience was. For now this pretty much sums up my thoughts and observations on toilet training.

@@7Aheadfamily On the subject of Simon’s accidents in the car when he feels he has no other choice I noticed that in the video about the trip to Dollar Tree that Simon did not appear to be crying like many kids would after an accident. I’m thinking that this is pretty common with kids on the spectrum because I didn’t cry after accidents either when I was little (or at any age really) and from what I have been told neither did my sister when she was younger. I also didn’t notice any other signs of Simon being upset but it’s possible that I missed something given that understanding body language still doesn’t come naturally to me. This makes me wonder if maybe Simon (in situations like this) feels pain or discomfort and then closes his eyes and pretends that he is on the potty so he can do what he needs to do and be able to feel more comfortable. If so then it would technically be an “on purpose” rather than a true accident. Even so considering his age and developmental level I would not consider it to be misbehavior per se. Therefore I do not think that he should be put in time out or otherwise punished for doing this. That being said it’s probably not too early for you to find some developmentally appropriate way for Simon to begin helping (in small ways) with the cleanup process by handling you wipes, small towels, wash cloths, or other safe and non toxic supplies that you need to use for the cleanup process.

Can verify . Myself , and both my sons have inattentive type ADHD . The medication does kill your appetite. We tend to get very hungry at night as the meds wear off. For us , without the adhd meds we can’t get going . I can’t even stay awake without it . Literally will fall asleep driving n run off the road . My boys also have apraxia of speech . They are 16 and 20 if you have any questions you’d like to ask regarding that . My youngest son didn’t speak till 5 1/2. You can tell he has a speech issue at 16 , sometimes has a a slight difficulty finding the words. And speaks with what he calls his speech impediment . But he’s doing good . Does great in school And is going to tech school to become an electrician

Honestly . Time. The signing never worked for them , they just never got the hang of it . We didn’t have the speaking tablets at the time. But I can see where that would be helpful, but coukd become a crutch . We did all the regular speech therapies in school and some out … and to be honest with the ADHD, it took all they had to give their focus and effort in school. Once they came home , they just needed a soft place to land , where they could recoup and relax and they did not want to have school/ speech therapy mixed with their home world . For years when they were younger ( once they began school) I tried and tried and it’d end in meltdowns where we got nothing much accomplished . So I let them lead . As my husband always said “ some kids just take longer to cook “ lol. But being the worry wort I’d be like “ but what if they never get there , what if they never get much better” and my husband would say , “ They will in their time . And if they don’t what are we going to do ? Kick them out ? Lol… We’ll deal with it then “ My children do not have the added issue of autism , though they do exhibit some characteristics . One has always stimmed . But has learn to control it in front of others . He works full time in a warehouse , but I can hear from his room when he’s watching tv and stuff his hands clapping and stuff… lol… My youngest son with the more severe speech apraxia …. He has always preferred to be a loner and that has always worried me endlessly …. But then I look around at our family and me and my husband are not very social creatures and get almost all of our social interaction from coworkers and family … and Dalton being a smart kid just learned this early . He’s like “ mom , I deal enough with people at school all day , I don’t want to come home and deal with them” We did play dates all when he was younger and I’d have kids sleepover … and he could never wait till they left … lol. I learned follow their lead . With the speech as they were younger and even know ( my oldest has mostly out grown it , except for people thinking he has an accent … 😂) but my younger son the best thing is don’t interrupt when they are trying to get the story out … even if it’s killing you inside to give them the words …. Unless they ask…. Give them the time they need to put the words together . It frustrates to be interrruptrd when they know what they are trying to say , but the words are getting jumbled . Let them work it out of their mouth , even if you know what they are trying to say . And lastly when they were younger we never acted as though they were different or had a problem ( as with you ) both our children were effected so to us we didn’t quite know what “ normal “ was . And in a way that is a blessing . Particularly for your children . I don’t know your stance on religion … but I learned to give it to God and trust he’d guide me with what I should do to help them . We still have difficulties to this day , driving has been a nightmare with the inattentive adhd , but it’s just taken longer … social things are still an issue for both …. But like my husband said … They just aren’t done cooking , they will get to where they are meant to be eventually . Where they are meant to be may not look the typical path or may not even be exactky as you had wished or envisioned and that’s ok . Everyone is different , there is no normal as far as I’m concerned . And some of what is so called “ normal” im glad we didn’t have … the partying , the sleeping around , experimental drug use , worrying where they they were some nights …. I’m glad we skipped that ! You two are amazing parents and are doing everything in your power for your boys . God Bless you ! When they are little it’s much different. As they get older and even some now … follow their lead …. As I’m sure you already do ! Ps… I began watching these videos because I am in the process of trying to get hired as a paraprofessional. We had an amazing school district with amazing aides and teachers that were instrumental in making my boys successful . I’m trying to learn all I can about autism , so if I am hired ….which it’s looking pretty good …. I will have some working knowledge on autism . So thank you for all of this !!

Meds or no? I am level 1 and take a minimum dose antidepressant. If I have been without for a while, I recognize symptoms. I have had big depressions in the past. I also had ADHD med for a few years, but did not notice any difference either way. A friend's level 1 or maybe 2 daughter has many meds. I do not know what they are all for, but she is much happier than before diagnosis. I have not been watching long, but Ezra seems happier. Could it be lack of meds, or just the long walks? How to tell? I am always happier when I can get out in nature and take long walks. Yes med? No med? Different med? I think you just need to try things and find what works best for him and for you.
