Amateur Storm Chasing | Oklahoma Thunderstorm Cluster
The key to storm chasing is to practice and keep a safe distance. Just look at them from afar. Tornadoes are actually pretty hard to find.
For first-time chasers, one of the most overlooked pieces of “equipment” is a chaser partner, someone to split the long days on the road when you don’t have time to stop and rest. Falling asleep at the wheel and becoming unfocused after days of driving without adequate sleep can force a person to make deadly mistakes - in traffic and during a storm.

What is a Microburst?
A microburst is a localized column of sinking air (downdraft) within a thunderstorm and is usually less than or equal to 2.5 miles in diameter. Microbursts can cause extensive damage at the surface, and in some instances, can be life-threatening. There are two primary types of microbursts: 1) wet microbursts and 2) dry microbursts. Wet microbursts are accompanied by significant precipitation Coand are common in the Southeast during the summer months.

@@hamradiocq I hope you don’t mind me asking this here but I used your Huskvarna 3200 videos to get me going when I first bought it from Costco a year or so ago. I just set it up again, by the book, and attached the garden hose and turned on the water. Nothing happened. When I started to unscrew the connection a little bit of water squirted back. The screen looks ok. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks much, man!

Yes! exactly they've been building like crazy..but those home you see were rushed. the back yards are crap. They had to bring in a bunch of dirt and now the housing market has started to tank and they aren't selling.

You jinxed yourself saying you are taking a break. I would say it is like deer hunting. You see them when you don't have a gun but storms in Oklahoma will come, again and again. You and your family are in our prayers. Take care and stay safe. Question: Does your tornado shelter have a water pump/sump pump in it?

Ha! Jinxed. It is just as hole in the ground so no. I do have a hand pump I bought down there with a bucket of water bottles batteries and flashllights though.

Tom, that was hell!!! I would say - the "best" weather for HF vertical on a mast! To say nothing of a multi-element Yagi. I hope you and your property survived. But one has to take such a storm into account when planning the antenna installation. If this happened, it will repeat itself sooner or later. May be wire antennas are the solution for your QTH.

Strong winds, plus icing were always a big concern for me when thinking of antennas. I have two very good verticals in stock, but yet remain hesitant installing them. For the time being a multiband end fed for about 42 meters long does the job, 80 meters up to 10 meters.

@@hamradiocq Texas was in drought since mid June. No rain anywhere - we couldn't buy a drop. Now it hasn't stopped raining for damn near 2 weeks. It was predictable. lol.

Well, I'll tell you. I let mine sit over a winter and I could not get it started. I tried for hours and it would not start. I haven't started it since. I would take yours to a small engine repair shop if I were you. I broke down and bought an electric power washer and I love it--- because it just works. amzn.to/3qjBdto

What CQ stands for? ham radio is a morse code radio thing, right?

CQ is a general call out to anyone anywhere. if you call CQ over the radio you're asking someone anyone please respond. Ham radio is talking or doing morse code over the air waves using radios and antennas and frequencies. It's really fun and interesting hobby.

@@hamradiocq Hi! Thanks for the precisions :) But where does that name HAM come from? I often wondered but never really searched. I’ve only got HAM radio app and another morse code practice app. I am disappointed by HAM Radio as they only offer a very limited number of channels and their news are rubbish, sadly.
