While I admit that the new Shogun has strayed from both the books and original TV Mini Series, it has for the most part kept the overall story arcs of these characters. If so, it is likely that Buntaro found out about Mariko and Blackthorne from someone (as he just suspects her of cheating so far). In the original series Toronaga found out that something was going on when Blackthorne asked for a divorce for Mariko. Seeing this preview scene here, I suspect that they have chosen to have Buntaro confirm what Toronaga was already suspicious of when he asked Mariko what was going on between her and Blackthorne. I think that explains the desire to take Blackthorne's head as Toronaga would have been stuck between a rock and a hard place with the social rules around marriage. As for Lord Yabu, he is destined to die a traitor if they keep to the overall story arcs of the book and original series. I hope they keep it a suicide as that was a great scene in the original series. While I love the actor playing Yabu, they have really cut his character down from the size of it in the original series. There is so much more depth, sarcasm, honor, and humor to the guy than they are portraying. He just seems like a scoundrel here out for his own neck. What I have found interesting in this series is how much they have downplayed the European influences of the original story and how it is much more focused on the "Japanese" story. I just wish they hadn't cut so many important scenes from the show. It feels SO RUSHED.

I haven't minded some of the changes myself, i get they have to condense & cut some things out when adapting a 1300 page book in only 10 episodes. But i agree the story overall remains pretty faithful save for a deviation here & there. Im loving the production quality.

@@khaii13 I carry a digital copy of the 85 series on my cell phone for when I am bored in waiting rooms or on flights. If you get it in a high res form or the DVD series (I have both), you will be surprised at how well it has held up to being almost 40 years old. It was made by a Movie Director, not a TV director. Some of the character arcs just feel shallow in comparison to the Mini Series to be honest, but it's someone else's interpretation.

@@JeremyIceAndFire33 I get the book part, but I don't yet understand why the original Mini Series is so much more in depth at 9 hours (uncut version) when there will be over 10 hours in this new series. That is where I am struggling with the most. Character development was much deeper in the original Mini Series for less total screen time. And when I say character development, I mean more characters with more development. Look at all the characters they aren't spending much time developing (Blackthorne's crew, Vasco Rodriguez, the Cardinal, Father Alvito, and Captain Ferreira to name a few), yet the remaining characters are still barely developed. I am not trashing it, it just shows the lack of character development in today's TV/Film industry vs. their contemporaries 40 years ago. It's what saddens me most about today's TV and Cinema. For all the technology we have advanced with, our ability to tell stories has gotten worse.

@@khaii13The book actually gives the perspective of almost all characters from many angles. You get to read inside their heads alot. I think the biggest gripe the book readers have had is about Blackthorne's transformation. A deal is struck where he has to learn Japanese in a specified set of time or Yabu threatens to kill most of the village. Blackthorne begins to love the villagers and eventually in response threatens to kill himself. It marks his change. Collective responsibility, self-sacrifice. He learned much of that from the example of his gardener whom he was closer too. The book is definitely worth reading.

@@MichaelCorryFilmsAlternative for reading is listening audiobooks .I have listened it English / Ralph Lister and in a second language. This second one has been perfect, incredible experience. Anyway without reading or listening Shogun is impossible to make an objective review on TV series..

As in the books there is no mention of Buntaro making a physical attempt on Blackthorne life, only demanding permission to kill him and being denied. Also no confrontation with Yabu. So now I am curious.

Fate delivered power into the Hands of Ieyasu. If Nobonaga had not been betrayed and assassinated before his heir had matured and Hideyoshi had not replaced him, history would have recorded the Oda Shogunate not the Tokugawa. Oda Nobonaga was the true master, Toyotomi Hideyoshi was his ablest apprentice, Tokugawa Ieyasu was the pupil who survived to succeed them both

History always tends to get written by the victor. For all the great deeds Tokugawa is known for, he made a few dishonorable moves as well. Like switching sides from the Immagowa clan to the Oda clan early on when he realized Oda would be victorious. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oq2eeNCdrbWokWg.html

@@JeremyIceAndFire33 of course he did he recognised the reality, Nobunaga would have crushed him and destroyed his clan. Nobunaga was no saint he was ruthless and vicious, a military genius and a master of Japanese politics and he was a teenager when his rise to power began, by necessity, it was either fight for dominance or see his own clan destroyed.

I thought toronaga said he was happy they killed junto so ischido will come attack them instead of them attacking osaka

Yea Toranaga was at first going to just wait for Ishido come to him after his son killed Jozen. But now that he lost a big portion of his army after the earthquake he's prob not as confident not having the numbers im guessing.

Akechi Tama, is basically the legit story, facts, and Mariko is loosely based off her. I still hope the movie will stray, and John end up with her, versus her dying.

@@bevinallard5492, ya John, marries a farmers daughter, has 2 kids, sends money to his other wife and kiss, back home, and a goods merchant, in Japan till his death at the age of 55.
